Review

Readers' Favorite 2017 Gold Medal Award5 Star BOOK REVIEWReviewed by Susan Sewell for Readers' Favorite"The Boy Who Knew Too Much: An Astounding True Story of A Young Boy's Past-life Memories" by Cathy Byrd is the fascinating account of a toddler who remembers being Lou Gehrig in another lifetime. The two-year-old toddler is totally captivated and immersed in baseball. As a matter of fact, he is totally obsessed with it. He lives in his miniature Dodger's baseball clothes and cleats and refuses to wear anything else. He plays with his small bat and ball from morning until night. When the toddler surprises his mother with the outrageous statement that he is Lou Gehrig, she is stunned. He describes things from the era in which Lou Gehrig lived and gives her personal information about the legendary man of which he nor any small child his age has access. Needing to know if her son is correct, she begins the search into baseball's early history. What she discovers is phenomenal. The Boy Who Knew Too Much (An Astounding True Story of A Young Boy's Past-life Memories) by Cathy Byrd is an extraordinary memoir about a mother's journey into her young son's past-life memories and the amazing discoveries that she makes along the way. Despite the implications and far-fetched nature of her toddler's claims and the fact they were outside of her religious belief system, she was willing to go beyond the accepted standard to get answers. Her dogged determination in seeking and sometimes ferreting out the information needed to validate her son's claim to his former identity is admirable. Her loving concern enabled him to accept who he is and helped him ease into this lifetime. This is an amazing story of how far a mother will go to protect and support her child's mental and spiritual well-being. This is a fabulous memoir, and I highly recommend it to those who have had similar experiences, and most especially to those who love incidents that are not conventional, but of a reality beyond our perceived rationality. This book is a winner!BookLife Prize - 2017Plot: The straightforward (and well handled) plot is enhanced via the way the author's involvement deepens even as her son's innocence is maintained. Readers will find the story compelling.Prose: The prose is direct and unembellished, which is appropriate given the subject matter. The story moves forward smoothly and is engaging.Originality: Readers will have encountered similar stories before. However, the baseball angle makes this book feel fresh and original.Character Development: Cathy is a well developed character who evolves as she is drawn ever deeper into the world of reincarnation and past lives, while her son is a charming innocent throughout.KIRKUS REVIEWIn Byrd's touching debut memoir, a little boy stuns his parents by declaring that he was the baseball player Lou Gehrig in a previous life. When Christian Haupt was only a toddler, he was singularly enthralled by the sport of baseball. Although he was still too young to play the game, he talked about it constantly, refused to wear anything else but a baseball uniform, and seemed peculiarly disinterested in other, typical attractions of his peers, including toys, television, or even other children. He also sometimes referred to himself as an alter ego named "Baseball Konrad." Byrd, Christian's mother, recorded a video of him playing ball in 2011 and posted it on YouTube in the hope of winning him the privilege of throwing out the first pitch of the season for his beloved Los Angeles Dodgers. The video was a sensation and ultimately led to Christian making a cameo appearance in the 2012 Adam Sandler movie That's My Boy. It turned out that Christian's indefatigable enthusiasm was coupled with genuinely precocious athletic talent. Byrd writes that one day in 2011, the young boy, still only 2 years old, started to share information about baseball from the 1920s and '30s, including some that was esoteric even for avid, adult fans. Then Christian began to relate memories of what seemed like a past adult life as a baseball player; Byrd figured out that Christian believed that he was Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig of the New York Yankees. Byrd was initially unsure what to make of her son's disclosures, and sought counsel from multiple sources, including Jim B.Tucker, a well-known professor of psychiatry and neurobehavorial science. Byrd's memoir almost reads like a suspenseful novel, and readers are sure to be gripped by the possible explanations she provides for Christian's seemingly inexplicable memories. She also thoughtfully reflects on her own spirituality, and the ways in which her son's revelations challenged her Christian faith: "I was particularly interested in finding out why the concept of living more than one lifetime was incompatible with Christianity....Much to my surprise, I could not find a single scripture in the Bible that repudiates reincarnation." On the whole, this is an affecting portrayal of parenthood, and an affectionate love letter from a mother to her unusual child. An eclectic mix of mystery, memoir, and the supernatural.

From the Author

Cathy Byrd is the author of the book "The Boy Who Knew Too Much," which was released by Hay House on March 21, 2017. The movie rights for this remarkable story have recently been purchased by 20th Century Fox and producer DeVon Franklin who created the movies "Heaven is for Real" and "Miracles from Heaven." Cathy is a residential real estate broker and mother of two young children who never had aspirations of becoming a writer until her two-year-old son began sharing memories of being a baseball player in the 1920s and '30s. What makes this story even more fascinating is that Byrd's son Christian Haupt has been touted by the international media as being a baseball prodigy since the age of two when he was discovered on YouTube by Adam Sandler for a baseball-playing cameo role in the movie "That's My Boy." Shortly after his fourth birthday, Christian became the youngest person to ever throw a ceremonial first pitch at a Major League baseball game and his YouTube baseball videos have now been viewed by more than 15 million people. Christian's case has been studied by Dr. Jim Tucker from the University of Virginia Medical School department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences. Dr. Tucker has continued the research on children's past-life memories that was originally started by Dr. Ian Stevenson in 1967. The University of Virginia now has over 2,500 documented cases of children who remember past lives on file. A Southern California native, Cathy received her B.A. from UCLA and her M.B.A. from Pepperdine University. The most likely place to find Cathy in her free time is at a youth baseball field.

Before the true believers get defensive here are books on reincarnation I have read and actually recommend:Reliving Past Lives by Helen WambachMission to Millboro and Return to Millboro: The Reincarnation Drama Continues both by Marge RiederReincarnation: A New Horizon in Science, Religion and Society by Sylvia Cranston & Carey WilliamsAll of these books actually make an intriguing argument for the case of reincarnation, both in a scholarly, psychological and historically accurate situations and a great deal of their believability is that the subjects of the books were not only "regular" people in one case the subject recalled literally being a mentally retarded shepherd which was more interesting than being a famous person really. There was also a sense of general unease amongst the subjects. The weight of previous life memories on a current life created a certain level of discomfort despite the interest whether they were traumatic or benign. That being said I found Cathy Byrd's book to be impossible to read and a bit infuriating and even insulting to the deceased as it feels more like a fame grab on the coat tails of Lou Gehrig, who conveniently does not have a surviving immediate family to defend him from this bizarre form of tomb raiding. There are just too many things about this book that are questionable and I think what Ms. Byrd has actually uncovered is a new strain of munchausen by proxy syndrome.1.Christian's claims of being a baseball player are predominately witnessed by by his mother and repeated only at her prompting to "witnesses". He never claims to be Lou Gehrig. Cathy makes that claim.2. Cathy had a decade long career in sports marketing and all of the time in the world to research her "project", plot her story and groom her son.3. The glossy videos and photo shoots of her son over the years, posed with players and other celebrities as well as enlisting him in multiple baseball camps is blatant show biz training and red-flags a momager in earnest.4. The whole thing reads like a glossy, carefully planned out tale and it appears that Cathy was courting a movie deal before she even got a book deal.5.That this is all dropped on us now that Christian is eight and Cathy claims that he is "forgetting" his memories is also convenient as this prevents him from having to be interviewed or studied in depth by more than one specialist on reincarnation. We just need to take her word for it.6. Let's face it, Cathy is the real star of the show and blatantly "regresses" herself to prove that she was Lou Gehrig's mother and that they both neatly found each other "through the sky" to be together and get famous together in a brand new life. The books I listed in the beginning made me think, "Yes, this can happen". Books like Cathy's are just too convenient and feel so wrong. As I said earlier, the greatest emphasis this book carries is Cathy's need for attention and that she rigorously does so thru her son is disturbing to me. What will happen as Christian gets older? What excuses does she have in place if/when Christian either tires of baseball or does not live up to his projected talent as he gets older? Lou Gehrig was a talented athlete before the use of enhancement drugs, arguably the players who had beaten his records did so under the influence of these drugs will Cathy be pumping junk into her son to ensure that he reclaims greatness? It just seems like Cathy has worked pretty darn hard to establish this (dare I say - fantasy?) reality and her validity points are just so tidy but I still feel like this is snake oil and a perhaps narcissistic mother's desperate attempt for attention and fame thru her hapless son.I'm just not sold on this. At all.

I made the mistake of reading some of the 1 star reviews before actually reading the book. Although these reviews stirred some skepticism in me, once I got into it, I wasn't able to put this book down. Being a huge baseball fan, and someone who has always believed in past lives, this story solidified my beliefs even further, especially by the time I got to the end. When you realize there are truly to "mistakes" in life and when you learn to trust the synchronicities, everything seems to fall into place, as everything does with Cathy's story. I loved reading about Cathy's past life regressions, and seeing her own beliefs transform before our eyes. I haven't checked out the regressions transcripts yet, but how you can deny the details she was able to confirm? This book is not just Cathy's amazing story and it's not just Christian's...It's the story of the love between a mother and son that transcends lifetimes. I highly recommend this book and cannot wait to see the movie!

While the story is very interesting, the voice of the mother drowned out the subject. In several instances the impression left by the presentation of the story was that Mom was really going for publicity more than using this fascinating and believable occurrence as a way to reach people. Reincarnation is such a comforting concept. Believing that our God is merciful, how relieved am I to know I have more than one chance to learn life lessons and improve as a human being over time.So much of this message was lost in the self-aggrandizing throughout this book, although that penchant seemed to escalate toward the end of the book.By the end, the mom/author I initially liked became somewhat repugnant. The content of the story became lost through the grating voice of the story teller.

The story as sold intrigued me but it was a complete bait and switch. It was significantly less about the son and more about the Mom. When she takes him to former childhood homes etc it seems way too overthought. I didn’t care about the whole reincarnation vs Christianity struggle storyline and thought those parts were boring, then skipped them as they droned on. The name dropping was too much as well. The parts I was interested in could have amounted to a nice magazine article.

The depth a mother will go for her child defies motherhood. Engaging in a sport she wasn't familiar with, meeting new people within it, traveling across the country, researching, engaging in meditation, being hypnotized for past life regressions and helping others along the way while holding down a full time job....all to ensure the little tyrant she has been blessed with is saturated within his all consuming love... baseball. Oh, and how her son possessed knowledge of and a belief that he was a famous baseball player from the 1920's and 30's. All wrapped up in a book that will have you scratching your head as to whether reincarnation is real. Cathy shares private experiences of her and her families lives with the hope of helping others. She also mentions how thinking in positive ways brought about special experiences in their lives. (A how to book for the would be seeker). I never played nor possessed much interest in baseball; I think those days might be behind me now.

The author is a Christian woman that does not believe in reincarnation. She has a son, who at a very tender young age convinces her that he was a famous baseball player in a past life. She wrestles with her beliefs at the same time she is trying to verify the stories her son is telling her.I have read many reincarnation stories, and I have to say that this is quite a compelling tale. I hope the family can go on and have a "normal" life in spite of the sensationalism this kind of story can cause. If you are not a believer in reincarnation, this story might just change your mind. I am glad I read it.

The Camera Does the Rest: How Polaroid Changed Photography

Review

"As Buse argues in his smart and engaging The Camera Does the Rest: How Polaroid Changed Photography, amateur picture taking was originally conceived of as 'a form of play'....Looking at a Polaroid is unlike looking at any other picture because a Polaroid has that which a photograph is supposed to lack: an aura. Each shot is singular, unrepeatable; each life, a story; each image, a measure of hungry, sucking time." (Harper's)"The Camera Does the Rest is the best kind of cultural study, and refreshingly jargon-free. Buse steers a course between the mockers and admirers, and brings concision, shape and clarity to a complex subject through his skillful plundering of the enormous Polaroid archive in Harvard Business School's Baker Library. This well-illustrated, handsomely produced book is rich in facts, speculation, and anecdotes." (Times Literary Supplement)"Scholarly yet joyful.” (Wall Street Journal)"Mining the Polaroid archives in the Baker Library Historical Collections, Harvard Business School, Buse researches how Polaroid cameras were marketed, the aesthetics of the Polaroid print, and the social rituals associated with owning and taking instant images. Other books detail the life of Polaroid’s founder Edwin H. Land and examine the company’s distinctive milieu; this scholarly cultural history is distinguished by Buse’s background in performance studies. The author is less interested in studying pictures than he is in thinking about the performative moment of taking and sharing instant photos, an aspect unique to Polaroid—until digital photography came into existence—an innovation that led to Polaroid’s demise but was also facilitated by instant film. For readers interested in photography history, the cultural history of technology, innovation, and business history." (Library Journal)"Critic and theorist Buse’s fine examination of the cultural history of Polaroid technology, The Camera Does the Rest, considers the societal forces at work as the company succeeded and failed, from the launch of its first camera in 1948 to its existence today. Scholarly and philosophical, the book is an intriguing read, although not a casual one. Buse’s answers offer insights into our interactions with technologies over time, as well as new ways of understanding the evolution of contemporary shutterbugs." (American Scientist)"?Polaroid is a technology whose sun has set. It casts long shadows nevertheless, and in this afterglow Buse pursues two lines of inquiry, both fascinating....One may debate the relative powers of the photograph when treated as a memento, or as a tangible object, or as a social act—and the history of the company reads like a précis of popular image technology in the 20th century. But, as Buse demonstrates, in being so different from so many other kinds of photographs, the Polaroid helps to reveal what photography has been, and what it does." (The Nation)"The Camera Does the Rest takes a deep dive into Polaroid’s corporate archives to reveal the company’s transformative influence on the photographic process. This book covers all of the cultural perceptions and scientific discoveries that made Polaroid something very special and leaves us with a clear sense of its lost pleasures, too. For Buse, Polaroid is not just an object of nostalgia, it is a catalyst undeniably linked to the massive changes we've seen in social rituals and imaging technology in our lifetime." (American Photo)"The Camera Does the Rest is a well-researched and thorough history of Polaroid photography, covering both the technical aspects of the cameras and their film, and the influence of this technology on society. It’s generously illustrated but is by no means a coffee-table book. Instead, it’s a serious history and analysis of the Polaroid phenomenon, and each illustration is included to make some point.”   (PopMatters)"Buse poses a linked series of questions, and the answers and reflections about the industrial, social, cultural, and artistic responses to Polaroid tell its unique history from its rise to its fall. His intelligent, thoughtful, well-written essays provide the framework for an excellent overview of the subject." (Choice)"The Camera Does the Rest has a richness of detail and language. Buse turns to myriad unconventional but vivid sources in his effort to resurrect just what it felt like to make, pose for, and view Polaroid images. This experience of instant photography is his true focus, and he addresses it from multiple, new, persuasive perspectives. In so doing, he makes the magic of the Polaroid moment vivid for those readers for whom that era is now a faint memory and for those readers too young to have experienced it. To my knowledge, the book has no peers in evoking the lost moments of Polaroid photography. While this alone makes it a mighty contribution to the study of visual culture, I would suggest that, in addition, the archeological approach Buse takes to his topic serves as an excellent model for scholars seeking in its archaeological approach, how to recuperate the novelty experienced when now familiar technologies were once new." (Technology and Culture)

Mr Sid Thatte has presented a very good Math workbook in a very traditional format. The author does not believe in frills and fringe methods - he is a traditional mathematician who believes in working out the problems and learning the concepts. His presentation is very methodical and he covers a wide array of concepts. The "Word Problems" section is extremely well done and they are grouped into different categories, which make for easy learning. This book is for someone who really wants to master the Math on the GRE/GMAT. It is not for someone looking for shortcut methods and some glossy presentation of Math topics. This is a book for the serious student who has both the time and motivation to learn. The downsides - and there are only a few - there are a couple of typos here and there (Ex. Page 49 - 3^3 is given as 9 instead of 27). The chapters could use a summary section to recapitulate the salient points and also include some problem sets. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get a great score on the Math section. Also check out Jeff Kolby's Nova GRE Math prep book (another very impressive effort!). 5 Stars for Sid Thatte's efforts - but there is room for improvement and fine tuning (Software, Chapter summaries and hard problem sets, and a more comprehensive treatment of the tricky Data Sufficiency section). Enjoy reading!

Very good book. Explain everything very well. It's essencial for people who left high school long time ago and forgot all math basics.

I'm one of those people that tends to struggle with math when tested so it was critical that I find a GMAT math book that broke down every concept and provide clear examples. I went through all the major books including Princeton Review, Kaplan, etc before finding this one. Sid's approach is the best I've seen. He doesn't take short cuts or assume you have a total command of all concepts by the first example. He provides several examples and very strong practice problems as well. He also provides easy to understand tricks to allow you to move quickly through certain problems and steps once you understand the major concept. He also provides advice that helps speed up your time--tricks people pay a lot of money to get from classes. I have recommended this book to at least four other people who have used it and all feel the same way. It was so refreshing to use this book after so much frustration and money wasted on books who claim to be thorough but really aren't.

This is my second GMAT book as I had to return the first one - it provided only problems and the final answers (not good for somebody who forgot the simple math). I highly recommend this version since it explicitly explains every topic presented. Not enough to teach you from "the ground zero" but well enough for you to recall the information. As my initial learnings was done in Europe where they teach math differently, and i forgot the European way but didn't know American, this book was sufficient to understand US way of solving problems. The author makes you THINK how to be efficient with time - a huge plus-so that you could avoid wasting it.Attn. Mr.Thatte: I haven't go through the whole book yet, but i think there is a potential for the mistake on pg.60, the top line. The final answer has x in exp.(14) in numerator and square y is in the denominator, however reviewing the solution it is y (14-12) and not 12-14, thus square y should remain in numerator. If i am wrong, anybody welcome to correct me, maybe my brain is just not getting this part.Other than that- great, great, great edition! Worth your money and time.About myself - white collar professional employed in financial analytics.

I'm a smart person who dropped out of math my freshman year in high school. Many many years later, I've got it in my head that I want to go to grad school, which means take the GREs, which means face up to my math demons.I picked this book because of the good reviews, and the title appealed to me. I needed a systematic approach, because doing practice questions wasn't going to help me. Aside from a little a+b=c kind of algebra, where I sort of remembered moving variables and stuff from one side of an equation to another, I was pretty much starting from a blank slate.I began working with Mr. Thatte's book about three weeks ago, and have been taking practice quizzes all throughout. I went from a feeling of abject failure, total cluelessness, to feeling somewhat familiar with many of the questions, and getting a couple right. Can you imagine that? Me, getting math questions right???!I've learned a ton of rules, and then, buy working through the problems in the book, have gotten a feel for the rules. That was what as missing in my attempt to learn math before, I could never relate to it, and it always made me feel bad, because I'd always end up with that horrible, horrible wrong answer. But in working with this book I'm actually feeling pretty good. I'm using index cards to work the problems as best I can, then I read through the solution, to see how I did. If I got a wrong answer, I usually see exactly why. So I get a kind of an "Aha" feeling, instead of an "I SUCK" feeling. Which makes everything more pleasant. And the amount that I've learned, the math that I'm now conversant with, after three weeks, is probably worth three years of high school. Being smart, I can get the gist of it fairly quickly, but being hard on myself, I never gave myself the chance to work it into my understanding by imperfectly working problems.Ask me about exponents and square roots and how many degrees in a straight line and how to calculate the area of a cylinder, and how to factor a quadratic equation (for that I had to supplement the book with you tube videos - I recommend greenemath.com).After doing this book I'm going to double down on my online practice test taking, but without this book, that would have been a complete waste of time for me.Thank you, Sid Thatte. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I put myself in your hands, you did right by me. I am now officially not a math hater. And I am ready to take my first attempt at the GREs this week, confident that I will recognize something about every problem.

Amazon.com Review

In 1927, Walter Evans-Wentz published his translation of an obscure Tibetan Nyingma text and called it the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Popular Tibetan teacher Sogyal Rinpoche has transformed that ancient text, conveying a perennial philosophy that is at once religious, scientific, and practical. Through extraordinary anecdotes and stories from religious traditions East and West, Rinpoche introduces the reader to the fundamentals of Tibetan Buddhism, moving gradually to the topics of death and dying. Death turns out to be less of a crisis and more of an opportunity. Concepts such as reincarnation, karma, and bardo and practices such as meditation, tonglen, and phowa teach us how to face death constructively. As a result, life becomes much richer. Like Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, Sogyal Rinpoche opens the door to a full experience of death. It is up to the reader to walk through. --Brian Bruya

I read this book nearly 20 years ago and remember sobbing after finishing it. I couldn't put my finger on it then, but now realize that I was sensing the depth to which it would effect me and my life. Out of a desire to "come back to" my old Self -- one I have sorely missed lately -- I recently decided to read this book again. (I needed a new copy so that I could make fresh highlights and notations.) I'm amazed to see from where SO many of my "leanings," beliefs, and core values had come. This book had clearly laid the foundation for most -- if not all -- of my long-held interest in/study of alternative medicine and energy healing -- tools I've relied upon and successfully used for nearly two decades. More than that, this book rooted my understanding of "the way things work" in the universe and blended with the teachings of my Christian upbringing to provide me with a rich and unique perspective on how to navigate life and it's challenges. I'll tell you a secret (and non-believers may find this a fluke): Since re-starting this book two weeks ago, I've had many strange and wonderful synchronicities occur that have validated my re-discovering it. Re-reading it seems to be like hitting the "reset" button -- putting me back into the natural flow of life and returning me to the happier, more peaceful person I once was. I wish the same for you as you begin your own journey with Sogyal Rinpoche's masterpiece.

A friend recommended this to me when my mother went into hospice care. From the moment I started reading it, I was powerfully impacted, as if my eyes were being opened. Then, when my mother died much more quickly than was expected, this book continued to empower me through the process - not just of letting go - but the deeper process of understanding the very nature of life and death. My compassion, ability to forgive and my love increased powerfully. During the holiday season, I gave copies of this book to my husband, who is also being profoundly impacted by it, and friends. Now I'm thinking about ordering more copies, for family and friends. I consider this book a MUST READ for EVERYONE! .

My mother was dying. It was inevitable that the process couldn’t be reversed. She was suffering, she was frightened and it was clear that she needed emotional and physical help during her dying process.I was confused, helpless and full of fear. That time I started to read The Book of Living and Dying. This book clearly explains what a dying person needs, how to help him or her to make the process as easy as possible. I started to make some simple meditation exercises that are recommended in the book.3 weeks later I sat at her death bed, holding her hand. None of us was frightened. We felt peace, calm and love. She passed away in peace. In her last hours she told: “I am going home now.”The most important revelation I have gained from this book was how to see life and death as one whole unit. This means we can start preparing for dying while we are living our everyday life. We can understand from this book that living and dying are parts of the same natural process. The book describes buddhist teachings but it was written for the western world. It can be understood and accepted by non-buddhists and even for non-religious persons (like my mother and I).I recommand this book for those who are facing to help somebody in their dying processes and for those who are ready to prepare themselves for their own dying. This means to make a 20-30 minutes meditation exercise every day. The book is especially recommended for those healers who regularly deal with dying persons. It is clear from this book that handling death as a taboo like in the western societies, is harmful for the individuals and for the society as well. We have to speak about death as a normal process, as a natural part of our lives!

My wife is writing this review, since she is the person who ordered it:After all the accolades surrounding this book and because of my interest in Tibetan Buddhism, I was eager to read this book. I found the first half satisfying and informative; however, when I reached the part about the necessity of submission to and total trust in one's master/guru, and the Djoghen practice, I became uneasy. I decided to research Buddhist masters, and I came upon several articles about the author Sogyal Rinpoche. According to a 2017 article in U.K.'s Telegraph, this enlightened person appears to have been tempted by the excesses of the West, becoming verbally and physically abusive to followers, demanding sex from female students, and generally living a lifestyle that is the antithesis of Buddhist teachings. I regret adding to his fortune by buying this book, and I encourage other potential buyers to do a bit of research before ordering. Please know that I am in no way criticizing the practice of Buddhism in general or Tibetan Buddhism in particular. There is much merit in its teachings. There are many honorable teachers to learn from, and I intend to pursue my interest with others. For me, however, I simply cannot read another word from this book.

I'm 70-years old, and in all that time, I've read hundreds of self help books. But THIS one is definitely "a cut above." It is, quite honestly, without peer, anytime, anywhere. Although I'm entering the last chapter of my life, believe me, this magnificent volume is "must" reading for ANYONE, regardless of age, or place in life. And don't let the name scare you... this book is the single best book I've ever read on the art and science of LIVING. I only wish I didn't take so long to finally pick it up and read it. It is an essential guidebook for the rest of your life, surprisingly easy to read and fantastically well-written. KUDOS to everyone responsible for getting this important teaching and information out to the American public:)

Omg! This book helped me decide on a cultural program for my first trip to Italy. Here are collected attractions that reveal the most visited cities in Italy. Thanks to this guide, I have already made my route for the upcoming trip. I have never met a simpler and more convenient guide.

The book is well done, and the options for all groups and kind of travelers are vast. I was very satisfied when finished the book, and already made a short list for future trips.

Very suggest this book.i really enjoyed this read.the author did an excellent job of writing.thanks to author.

Great to have this guide book as we love to travel. This will guide us as well as tour us to Italy. Thanks.

It was also filled with little tips about Italy, from public transit to ideas for how to skip lines. My only suggestion is to look up the hours before you go anywhere recommended by the book, many of the hours listed for museums/restaurants were incorrect.it is very complete and full of very important and interesting information. Some of the information is exclusively for US people but nevertheless is information for other nationalities. It does not provide for instance, organized walks with descriptions for different amount of stay days. This guide is so packed full of information that I know I will learn all I need to know to travel to Italy.Awesome book! A lot of knowledge about many cities. Definitely looking forward to my trip to Italy!

I am a nurse who lives to read any medical memoirs. There are few written so eloquently portraying what it is like emotionally in a hospital. Even though there is still a class distinction off Dr vs nurses, I enjoy the perspective from a MDs view who actually shows emotion and care for their patients. Very well written. Very enjoyable!!

Probably one of my favorite medical memoirs. Dr. Ofri is amazing. There is a vulnerability that she isn't afraid to show in her books, which is needed because sometimes we do tend to forget that doctors are just as afraid as their patients, whether they show it or not. She talks about the struggles of dealing with personal tragedy and just keeping relationships with all the patients under her care. It's definitely one of the books you could read twice because it reads more like a story than a memoir.

Danielle Ofri is the type of doctor you would be lucky to find, should you need one. This book is an extremeley intelligent and sensitive document of the interaction between doctor and patient, health and sickness, and the nature and limits of healing. It's also a hands-on, first person account of what it's like to work in one of the biggest and busiest hospitals in the country. Her essay, "Merced," on a patient who continuted to suffer from a mysterious and unknowable ailment, is a wrenching tale of a doctor who can't help her patient, despite incredible efforts and every modern mechanism. The fate of that patient is gripping and chilling, and she stays with me some three months after reading the book. Finally, for a doctor -- for anyone, in fact -- Danielle Ofri writes like a dream.

Singular Intimacies, Danielle Ofri's first non-technical book, is a brilliant addition to the memoirs of physicians and other health care workers. In it, Ofri chronicles her transition from medical student to internist at New York City's Bellevue Hospital. She is humble, funny, smart, sophisticated, vulnerable, and blessed with rare insight. In addition, she has the gift for lucid, direct prose. This book will appeal to physicians, other health care workers, the general public; and especially to those young persons considering a career in medicine. For this latter group and for medical students it is a "must read."Occasionally, when reading a book I feel like Keats did when he first opened Chapman's "Homer." "Then felt I like some watcher of the skies when a new planet swims into his ken." Singular Intimacies imparted this welcome and always surprising feeling to me. It should enjoy a great success and help to inspire and humanize many future (and some practicing) physicians.

Dr. Ofri describes her journey from medical student to 1st and 2nd year resident in Bellevue hospital, New York city with a rare combination of medical skills together with emotions and feelings both as a healing provider and with insight into those of her patients. Over a 10 year period, Dr. Ofri completed a Ph.D in Pharmacology as well as an MD in addition to becoming a remarkable writer. The reader stands over her shoulder as Dr. Ofri writes down the final directions given by a charming french woman with lung cancer, recounts her first night on call attending to prisoners from Rikers Island, in Ob/Gyn, being involved in the birthing of a newborn, the ordeal of talking to the wife of a psychiatrist dying from pancreatic cancer about what terminal treatment her husband would want Certainly, Singular Intimacies-Becoming a Doctor at Bellevue should be read by anyone aspiring to be in or involved in the healthcare field. Moreover, with the current emphasis on shared physician-patient medical decision making, it will enhance participation of those seeking medical care. Lastly, this work has the impact of a vivid and engrossing novel.

I knew that Danielle Ofri was an outstanding editor (if you haven't read the Bellevue Literary Review, edited by Ofri, run out a get a copy--it's one of the best journals being published today), now I learn that she's an outstanding author as well. Reading Singular Intimacies I found myself weeping, cheering, and just plain enjoying. She captures perfectly the transition from medical student to physician, the internal and external changes, the growing sense of expertise, and the arrival of true caring. Along the way she reveals herself as fully human and compassionate. Among the many currently popular books by physicians, this one stands out.

I first read Danielle's writing in a Best American Essays book. It was such a wonderful essay that I immediately went out and bought the book in hardcover because I knew it would be a keeper. I was not disappointed. Her writing stands out because not only are the stories riveting but she has true talent as a writer as well. Each story teaches you something; sometimes a new medical fact, but more often you learn something about the human experience. Danielle is now at the top of my (very short) list of authors to buy in hardcover because I know I'll read them again and again.

Good read
