#371,576 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I received Marsha Clark’s book “Without a Doubt,” about the OJ Simpson murder trial, as a holiday gift this past year and enjoyed it immensely. Given the miscarriage of justice perpetrated upon the conclusion of the criminal trial, however, I got to thinking about the civil trial. I did recall that it was after a civil trial (with a different standard of proof: by a preponderance of the evidence versus beyond a reasonable doubt) that a jury delivered a verdict (in the form of a money judgment) against OJ Simpson for having caused the wrongful death of Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman, but I hadn’t really followed the case when it was taking place, and now I was curious. So I picked up this book. And I was bowled over!Daniel Petrocelli was already a highly successful civil litigation attorney. While he had never before tried a “personal injury/wrongful death” case, specializing instead in commercial litigation, he was approached by Fred Goldman, the father of victim Ron Goldman, to “get” OJ Simpson for the murder of his son. Given the outcome of the criminal trial, this was Goldman’s last ditch effort to expose the killer for what he was. (The family of Nicole Brown joined in on the case.)Fred Goldman wanted to see OJ “squirm” a little, and under Petrocelli’s masterful handling of this case, squirm he did. Petrocelli goes into great detail in describing OJ’s pre-trial deposition, which took place over the course of several days (a procedure which does not take place in the criminal sphere), and more significantly, his testimony during the actual trial (something which OJ opted out of in the criminal trial). Petrocelli did an outstanding job in exposing OJ’s web of lies.I don’t fault Marsha Clark for losing the criminal trial (I think she was more a victim of a biased jury and a dirty-tricks defense team and a clueless judge), but I think Daniel Petrocelli was an absolute powerhouse. His energy and momentum and discipline in the unrelenting pursuit of justice on behalf of his client Fred Goldman and his tireless preparation of the wrongful death case brought by the families of the victims were nothing short of awe-inspiring.Last night I finished off this book reading the chapters on the closing arguments before the jury and the jury’s return of its verdict, and I had the odd sensation that I was reading a pot-boiler fictional legal thriller instead of an account of something that had truly and actually happened in the real world. The final passages of this book are so dramatic and so thoroughly gripping – and so heart-rending – the reader is drawn right into the maelstrom. When Petrocelli finished his closing statement, you must have been able to hear a pin drop in that courtroom!Given the detailed nature of the facts here, I was very impressed with the tight cohesiveness of this book. Its by-line is “Daniel Petrocelli with Peter Knobler,” and while I have no way of knowing how much was Petrocelli and how much was Knobler, all I can say is that if Petrocelli as an attorney managed all his cases as tightly and deftly as this book is written, it is no wonder to me why he is such a success and why he ended up winning this difficult case.“Triumph of Justice” is exceptionally well-written and painstakingly detailed. No stone is left unturned in terms of describing the mind-boggling evidence and the delicate timeline of unfolding events. Petrocelli also goes to great length in accounting for the motive behind the murders and – once again with a nod to the timeline – destroying the murderer’s alibi. One thing I appreciated so much about this book – in contrast to the constant emphasis on it in the Marsha Clark book – was that the issue of race took a back seat. The civil case was tried on the evidence, NOT on insinuation and accusations of malfeasance on the part of the LAPD that could not be proven.I’m sure I’m not the first one to have this thought, and I know that Daniel Petrocelli is not a criminal prosecutor – and with no disrespect to Marsha Clark – but I can’t help feel that if he had stood in the shoes of the assistant district attorney during the criminal prosecution of this case, history would have unfolded very differently, and the “Crime of the Century” would have had a very different conclusion.

I was unable to skip ahead at any point in this book. I, like most laymen, get tired of repetitive legalese, so I sometimes do that. In this book I tried twice and missed very important information. I had to go back to see what I had missed. This alone made me see how well written this book is.My only complaint was how the people who took and won this case learned to be so happy being in the media. I don't believe that any trial should be tried in the media, but in today's world it is. As this trial prep, research and more progressed it seemed to me that the people doing the work changed from really decent people who whole heartedly believed in all the right ways, what they were doing, to media stars and they grew to liked that too much. I admit that I come late to this story, when all this was happening I was too busy to follow the trial. I was just happy that Simpson was found guilty. When I first heard about this book, (very recently) I had hoped that Mr. Petrocelli had written this years after the trial. To my mind it would have shown him in a better light. In the end, I came to believe that they were all as committed, and for all the right reasons, to this case as they had been in the beginning. I recommend that anyone who believes Mr. Simpson is not guilty open their minds and hearts as well as any previous belief that the LAPD was bad (it was, but not particularly in Simpsons case) through and through, and really see the truth. For the black community, this will be hard and with damned good reason. But, as a sixty four year old white woman who has been totally color blind my entire life, I you they will at least try. I know that a huge percentage of black men and women are innocent but in prison. I know that and hate it. The only way to fight it in my mind at least would be to take the high ground and not riot and be destructive, but to make sure to hit the polls and vote. Be informed about candidates who represent you at all levels. Every time a riot happens it just gives the white bigots, many of whom are pundits on television heard and believed by millions, (usually respected by those unwilling to see them as they truly are) more ammunition. The black communities all over this country are better than this as I believe are the Hispanic, Asian and Natiive American communities. A few hotheaded vandals should not represent all of you.Justice was not done here because Simpson was not found guilty of murder and sent to jail. The justice won in this case was for the families of the victims, so for them and the memories of their murdered children I can end this feeling very good about it. I highly recommend reading this book.

This book was not written to simply give more fame to the case. It felt like it was written to finally put any doubt to rest about O.J. Simpson, the evidence, and the civil trial. It felt honest and you could feel Petrocelli's conviction and perseverance.Petrocelli gave every piece of evidence and a lot of things the general people didn't know about. He didn't hold anything back. He laid it all out in a clear concise way. He didn't use his own name to flame his ego either. He honestly wanted justice for Nicole and Ron. He loathed the killer, Simpson. He did such a great job showing Simpson's character so that we had no doubt as to what type of person he is.The parts about Fred Goldman were great. Truly showing emotion and his connection to his client in the pursuit of justice.I've read other books written, Marcia Clark, Jeffrey Toobin, O.J. Simpson and the Goldman's, Mark Fuhrman, but this has been the best one depicting the entire case. The evidence, the process, and Simpson himself.

I love this cookbook in both hardcopy and kindle forms.... HOWEVER the kindle version is NOT the most recent edition, it is from 2015 not 2016. You can see the difference in the covers and some recipes are different. I own both, just purchased both this week, and honestly I like that they have slightly different recipes. In the month of January alone there are a number of different salads. It seems like they swapped out some of the recipes. I wish they would have given me the most recent edition in kindle but the flip side is that i have some additional recipes that are not in my hard copy and I love them...like the Jan 28 recipe... I will attach photos to show some differences in recipes. As you can see the January 10 and jan 28 recipe is different, if you look at the table of contents i posted from hardcopy and kindle, you can see all the differences in that month. I like the Jan 10 recipe better in the hardcopy version and in the kindle I prefer the jan28th recipe over the hardcopy. Inattached bkth side bt aide so you can see for your self. Despite this small issue this is one of my favorite cookbooks and I'm glad I have both versions. I love the recipes.

Love this book! It's very helpful for beginner salad maker like me. I make at least 3 recipe from this book every week, and they taste great! The only thing I didn't notice at the beginning was the serving size for each was different. I thought it was set up for 2 people, but turns out most are for 4-6. I have never make salad at home before, and these are the salads I made by following the instructions on the book.

My husband and I are salad fanatics. That said, this is THE best salad cookbook I have ever seen or used, and I must own over 25. In fact this is so superior to every other salad cookbook I've used that I have given away all the others. For those of you following a low carb diet, it is easy to adapt the recipes. Thank you, Georgeanne, for a splendid cookbook.

It seems like most of the salad books I've seen are just basically ice burg lettuce with different dressings and/or veggies/fruits thrown on top, what I really appreciate about this one is all the salads really are different from one another. There are recipes using whole grains (I've made two of the wheat berry salads, great for bringing for lunch as they just get better after sitting in the fridge), fruits/veggies (made a wonderful spinach/strawberry salad w/ poppy seed dressing and toasted nuts), a variety of strictly fruit salads, and your picnic/potluck items like potato salad, pasta salads and egg salad. It also uses a variety of greens and here's where the index comes in handy, I was at WF the other week and they had dandelion greens, I've never had them but picked some up, looked in the index, and there was a recipe! Having this book has made me feel more adventurous while I'm at the grocery store in what items I'm going to buy, knowing that I'll be able to find a tasty and healthy way to prepare them.

At first I was a little upset that it didn't seem to have recipes I would like, but the Moore I read the more recipes I found. I've tried quite a few already and they are amazing! There's a pesto chicken pasta salad that is so good I have to make 2! One as a decoy for my husband, the second to actually bring with me to the party!

I have been looking for a book with salad recipes in bookstores and libraries. Each one had more recipes that I wouldn't use than I would. I checked the reviews for this book and it holds up to the reviews. My husband is a diabetic and many of the salad ideas are healthy and filling. Some of the recipes have the protein source along with the vegetable and grain. So many good recipes. While the few that I have tried so far have introduced me to new products the products were not hard to find or expensive. The wide variety will please everyone.

I enjoy salads. This collection provides a nice variety from the usual green salad. Great for potlucks. Only wish my family liked salads as much as I do.

many of these recipes cant be considered salads or require difficult to source produce but its still nice to have around

Review

"Paul Hanstedt is a teacher’s teacher. He approaches the college classroom with a combination of excitement, experience, skill, and humor. His goal – to create 'wicked' students, ready to face the daunting challenges of the twenty-first century – is right on point. And his strategies and recommendations are clear, practical and instructive. I can’t wait to share this highly readable and valuable book with my colleagues." (Bret Eynon, Associate Provost, LaGuardia Community College (CUNY), Co-Author, High Impact ePortfolio Practice: Catalyst for Student, Faculty and Institutional Learning 2018-03-23)"A must-read for anyone who cares about educating the next generation of change agents. Hanstedt combines practical advice for all college teachers committed to learning outcomes that will help students thrive post-graduation with a thoughtful analysis of what our true jobs as educators should be in a world that is in flux, deeply inequitable, but also in need of many more wicked problem-solvers." (Debra Humphreys, Ph.D., Vice President of Strategic Engagement Lumina Foundation 2013-03-23)"Hanstedt’s conversational tone conjures feelings of sitting with a colleague sharing ideas, brainstorming, and exchanging stories over coffee with lots of laughs. At first, I didn’t want to participate in the “Designing Your Course” sections. But by the first “Intermission” I was so inspired I was engaging in all activities, ideas pouring out as if attending a great conference. Hanstedt uses his own wicked design within his book, resulting in an overwhelming sense of authority for the reader, indeed demonstrating the power of wickedness." (Kim Whiter, Director of Faculty Development Jefferson College of Health Sciences 2013-03-23)"Creating Wicked Students places faculty members in the role of engaged learners where the skillful Dr. Paul Hanstedt guides them to construct curricula, courses and assignments that will prepare students to participate in the world in active and constructive ways. Faculty readers become Dr. Hanstedt’s 'wicked students,' equipped to transfer the skills practiced in this book to challenge their own students to do their best work." (Amy Sarch, Phd, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs Shenandoah University 2013-03-23)"Hanstedt’s Creating Wicked Students is, as they say in Boston, “wicked good”―a clear, clever, and creative step-by-step guide to creating courses that help shape students who are ready to engage with and make a positive impact on the world in which we live." (Michael Reder, Director, Joy Shechtman Mankoff Faculty Center for Teaching & Learning Connecticut College 2013-03-23)"This book could be useful as an introduction to course design for someone less familiar with the fundamentals, such as how to develop measurable learning outcomes, align course goals with institutional goals, nest content within higher-order goals, engage students’ prior knowledge, or incorporate applied learning. The structure of the book allows for one to follow it step-by-step as a course design manual, and it also includes recursive 'intermissions' to encourage reflection along the way. In addition, his discussion of how to prompt critical thinking through multiple-choice exams offers helpful strategies for encouraging students to explain their thinking on ambiguous questions with follow-up questions that explain or justify their choice." (Reflective Teaching 2018-09-14)"From its playful title to its final chapter, Creating Wicked Students offers a thought-provoking new approach to course design focused on helping college students develop the abilities and self-authorship needed to work –and live―meaningfully. Hanstedt guides the reader through a design process for courses where students learn skills and content, but more significantly, develop 'the ability to step into a complex, messy world and interact with that world in thoughtful and productive ways'." Creating Wicked Students is both practical and provocative. Hanstedt invites readers to consider how they develop an effective learning environment- from drafting the syllabus to crafting the exams and large and small projects. His goal is to suggest how faculty might enhance the senses of responsibility and authority in and for learning which imparts to their students a sustained interest in taking on intellectual challenges and solving problems. With a focus on course design, Hanstedt progresses through the idea of giving students authority for their learning from the wicked problems (strategic thinking) inquiry model. He guides readers through how to write engaging outcomes statements, effective and creativity-sparking assignments, exams, and activities. He discusses how assignments can be evaluated at levels from no or little credit, to partial credit, and then full credit, in an effort to simulate and stimulate real world thinking among students. The chapter on assessment ties the argument together around how to derive meaning from the wicked inquiry approach and how to convey the meaning first to students, then to the campus on the whole. Each chapter has an exercise in it that allows the readers to continuously review and revise a course of their choice. Again, in the assessment chapter, he offers a model for a rubric adaptable to each readers’ needs. The six appendixes are fully developed, illustrating diverse types of assignments from across the disciplines that may be used as models. Overall, Hanstedt provides good conversation for experienced faculty that is comprehensive enough for professional development and curriculum workshops. The book should be widely read by those actively seeking transparent and intentional ways to empower students to get beyond themselves by taking risks in learning, with the end goal of building the kind of confidence they may need for long term success in their lives.

Fantastic book full of excellent ideas. I have read it multiple times, talked about it to everyone I know, and cited it in my academic work. Not only does Hanstedt give good examples for teachers, but his ideology - that better learning is wrought through better assignments - is one that we should all examine and espouse.

This is a great book to use for a campus book group discussion. It was easy and quick to read and provided something for everyone in the book group (from disciplines across campus). May of the book group members immediately put into action some of the ideas from the book. One book group member created a new course using the structure provided by the author.A great read!
