The Call of Trains: Railroad Photographs by Jim Shaughnessy, by Jim Shaughnessy

From Booklist

*Starred Review* The end of railroad trains as major means of long-distance travel and short-haul shipping was foreseeable since the 1930s, as automobiles and trucks became sturdier and cheaper, paved streets and highways covered the nation, and, after World War II, wages mushroomed. Fortunately, a generation of camera-wielding young “railfans” artfully recorded the decline, thanks to the very cars that doomed the railroad companies. Shaughnessy began shooting trains in downtown Troy, New York (his hometown), in the middle 1940s. He eventually took lengthy trips, first in New England and Canada, later across the Midwest to the Southwest, to photograph trains. He initially focused on the big engines but quickly extended his purview to include railway workers, railway buildings, and the countrysides through which the trains rolled. A civil engineer rather than a professional photographer, he became as skilled as any pro and at least as resourceful as, say, O. Winston Link (The Last Steam Railroad in America, 1995), whose nighttime train photography Shaughnessy actually anticipated. Less theatrical than Link, Shaughnessy is an artist equally capable of achieving a shining lineation reminiscent of fine-point engraving and of rendering roiling masses of steam and smoke as charged as a running dog in a futurist painting, of dignified stillness and enveloping motion. Appearing on full pages of this oversize volume, his pictures are engrossing, stunning masterpieces of photodocumentation. --Ray Olson

This is a well crafted book that will have great appeal to those who lived through or appreciate the transition from steam to diesel power in North American railroads. The book is filled with many excellent black & white photos that capture the richness of railroading in an age well removed from the sterility that marks the present day. The center of gravity is the United States, but Canada is well-represented, with some photos from Mexico too. There is a well-written "Railroad Landscapes" section that prefaces the actual photographs. This preface contains an intelligent discussion on the evolution of railway photography and is worth careful reading in its own right. The photos themselves are a real treat. Captions tend to be a bit sparse in some cases and are not overly elucidated by the "Afterword & Captions" section at the end of the book. Dedicated railfans might appreciate more but, in the end, this is not a book for the rivet-counters but more for people who enjoy the work of a masterful photographer who has wonderfully captured the essence of a by-gone era. It's a very nice book and well worth the purchase price.

This is probably not going to be popular, based on other reviews here. I just got my copy of "The Call of Trains," and, based on a first view, I must say I have some misgivings. Some.Let me start by stating that, obviously, Jim is a tremendous railroad photographer. I work in black & white myself, and cannot come near his level of excellence. That being said, a few of the images in this book (very few) left me unsatisfied. Several are certainly not sharply focused, and several suffer from an extreme lack of depth of field. I would be interested to get either Brouws' or Mr. Shaughnessy's perspective on the inclusion of these images. I can't imagine that they were constrained by a lack of selection to choose from, and I cannot make the soft images work from a creative or "atmospheric" bent. One shows a desk inside a wayside structure, and hardly anything is in focus. Another is taken behind an engineer hanging out of a locomotive window, and the only thing in focus in the whole picture is the wind deflector. Finally, one of my favorite pictures in the whole book is the two page spread of SP Alcos being scrapped, and everything except the background is soft. Since JS works in 4x5, sharpness at this amount of enlargement should not be an issue. I work in 2 1/4 square and 11x14 is a breeze; 4x5 yields a negative more than 4 times the size.Secondly, I feel that some of the "human interest" shots seemed posed and unnatural. However, they were all well composed and excellently lit.OK, now the good stuff. This book is terrific. My previous misgivings about just a few pictures have been stated - if you are a train nut you need to own this. Shaughnessy's night photos are on par with any I have ever seen, and many are so well lit that the lighting seems natural instead of artificial. Another reviewer here has referred to Link's work as a "gimic" (which are fightin' words), and in Link's case the lighting is effective but obvious. Here, again, many of the artificially lit shots seem natural. In Link's defense, I will mention that most of his subjects were in motion, unlike many other nighttime railroad photographers.Shaughnessy has lots of winter scenes that pose problems when shooting black locomotives against snowy backgrounds, but obviously through both great camera- and darkroom-work he has created fantastic images in nearly all of them. In addition, Jim has captured many nice scenes "in-town" in addition to the scenic rural shots, and I think it provides an important historical record of the human landscape that existed at the time, and not just the railroad landscape. The city-scapes may be my favorites. I also love the wide scene with the lines of condemned cars and locos awaiting scrapping in Boston - very Plowden-ish.I wish Amazon would let me give this book 4 3/4 stars, but I just can't quite give it 5. When I compare it to the other similar B&W RR works we have seen in the last decade (Stein's "Passion for Trains," Benson's "One Track Mind," Lamb's "Steel Wheels Rolling"), I feel this one comes up just one freckle short. Let me state again, I have not yet read this book, nor taken the time to absorb each picture (I spent two hours with it last night, it will take much longer than that to finalize my opinion), and I reserve the right to modify this review once I have fully digested it.Once again, you need this book. It will go on my shelf of honor with the aforementioned Stein, Benson, Plowden and Lamb, next to Beebe, Olmsted, Wood, and color shooters McDonnell and the died to young Gary Bensen. Shaughnessy certainly belongs in their company.Buy this book. Learn that light is more important than color.

An excellent coffee table book. An incredible set of photographs of Jim's journeys that show what railroading is all about.

There is a reason why Shaughnessy is considered a master amongst railway photographers and deserves similar recognition as a photographer in general and this book provides the proof on every page. The composition and subject matter are always thoughtful and artful and his technical brilliance in use of light and shade render pretty well every image a work of art. His images leave a lasting impression and show the whole railway and its people, not just the trains. His photos depict the steam railroad in particular as it should be seen and respects and honours the working class people who served and brought it to life, it is a testament of a form of working life gone forever. I don't normally provide reviews, but in this case it is just so brilliant I think the book deserves promotion, every steam rail fan should get it. Brilliant! .

Really impressive book. I bought this for my dad who loves trains as a birthday present. They book is really well put together and the photographs are very impressive. I'm not into trains as much as a lot of people on here, but I was still blown away by the quality. It is a pretty big (LxW wise) book and would be really great for a coffee table book as well. I highly recommend it!

Incredible book. I saw some of the photos in a preview from a RPI mailing and was stunned by the photos. The book is all black and white and mainly from the 50's to 70's. Lots of steam trains, fewer electric train photos. You feel part of the photographs, as if you are there in some way, and the backgrounds to the trains are all interesting and encompassing. Wish I could purchase some of the photos framed but haven't found any way to do that.Would make a great present for a train buff, but anyone would enjoy these.

The photographs inside this extraordinary book by Jim Shaughnessy have captured subjects in railroad scenes that will captivate and inspire the imagination of it's viewers for life. The large thumbnail prints and notes in the volumes' last 20 pages will give the owner of this great work a special appreciation for Jim's gift of capturing in photos and print what railroading was in a time gone by. Thanks Jim Shaughnessy.

Jim Shaughnessy has always been an excellent railroad photographer, and this book is an awesome collection of some of his best, some dating back to his teenage years. I thank him for taking these photos of the last operations of steam in the USA and Canada so that they can be shared with all of us. He was one of the pioneers of night photography and the innovative lighting techniques to accomplish it. I am very happy with this book.

Awesome reference to tropical trees. Lots of unusual trees I had never heard of.

It is not easy to say something sensible about this book. It is just too overwhelming. As can be expected these days of the Timber Press this is a lavishly illustrated, gorgeously printed and handsomely bound volume. Lay-out is immaculate. All pictures (full color) are of a beautiful quality, or better. An immense amount of information is given for each species (usually one page is devoted to each species). In view of the wealth of information provided, there is a huge potential for error, but the book appears to be remarkably error-free. A curious error is that of using "cv." before a cultivar epithet. The one error-prone category here is that of the author abbreviations in the botanical names: these do not consistently follow the recommended standard and, from time to time, are in something of a mess. Obviously, this is unlikely to trouble those who belong to the book's target audience. The other thing that can be questioned is its aim to cram so many trees into one book. However, for someone wanting a handy (if big) one-volume work on (sub)tropical trees this cannot be recommended enough. It will also make a lovely gift to just about anybody.

Certainly seems authoritative. Lots of information. A nice reference. Plenty of photos. - but:- it does not include Palmae.- the three-page identification section is mostly a list of questions but usually no indication of what to do with the answers.

I had this book on my wish list and got it for Christmas 05. I can't say anything bad about it. Very clear pictures not the line drawings. Very clearly explained and well layed out. I would recomend this book to anybody interested in learning about tropical tree's. It even had a tree that you don't find in a lot of books

although general good, I'd like it to be more cautious about the frost hardiness of each species(The reason I bought it). There are trees that are described as being more tender than they are and other that are more hardy to frosts than in reallity. I mean that USDA zones are sometimes not so accurate for some species describedBut beyond this there is a great amount of information inside it and many pictures also

I have bought several copies for my book store customers here in Panama, and all are delighted with this book. Though a bit cumbersome, it is certainly thorough, and a valuable research tool for anyone interested in the flora of the tropics. It's beautifully illustrated, a book to display as well as study, typical of Timber Press' fine volumes.

An imprescinble issue for all lovers of tropical trees. Very good colour pictures and excellent and short information. The USDA zones assigned to trees sometimes are not accuracy in my experience.

Review

"Art as Social Action presents a sharp set of pedagogical tools for teaching and learning about art as a vehicle for social engagement. Having evolved from an innovative collaboration between Queens College and Queens Museum, the book's offerings are embedded in the workings of both community and artists, breaking down the very idea of what participation means in art and non-art contexts. Key questions of authorship, which audiences are served, how does engagement happen, and whose needs are met and how are addressed with forthright vigor. The volume importantly provides rigorous interrogation of the process as well as the outcomes; it is an essential guide to deepening social art practices and teaching them to students." —Laura Raicovich, president and executive director, Queens Museum, NYC "It's no small thing to educate at the intersection of art and social justice. It's a scope of inquiry that has tripped up art historians, artists, and college deans for multiple decades. This contribution is valuable to educators in its insight, pragmatism, and breadth." —Nato Thompson, artistic director of Creative Time, author of Culture as a Weapon: The Art of Influence in Everyday Life "This book is a great resource that connects the dots between the pedagogy for socially engaged art and the most pressing pressure points for social change. In doing so, it reinforces the urgency of this art practice, and signals clearly that social practice prioritizes societal change over academicism." —Paul Ramirez Jonas, artist and professor, Hunter College CUNY "Art as Social Action is a powerful testament to the resliience of artists and educators in keeping critical thinking and creative expression central to how we define ourselves as a people in the era of late capitalism. Chloë Bass and Gregory Sholette bookend this anthology of methodologies with their key wisdom on how, where, and why art and education blur into the social realm. Now more than ever there is a need to recognize the plurality of voices, approaches, and directions that socially engaged art practice offers. This book shows that the many-headed beast of social art practice cannot be defined singularly or sold in duplication. Any practitioner working with communities or any educator looking for strategies for engagement would benefit from the wealth of information in these pages." —R. M. Sánchez-Camus, PhD, Social Art Network, UK "Art as Social Action is not your typical book about socially engaged art. . . . It is a collection of texts by teachers who, together with their art students, look for creative ways to enter in a discussion with society outside the classroom about topics as different as labour conditions, immigrant rights or mining on sacred Native American sites. Texts by teachers who want to make works with rather than about local communities. And, hopefully, make this world a slightly fairer and kinder one." —we make money not art (blog)"Art as Social Action presents a sharp set of pedagogical tools for teaching and learning about art as a vehicle for social engagement. This book has useful advice and examples that can be helpful wherever you are along life’s journey. Lisa & Paula not only write about their successes, but include times of adversity and growth experiences, with input from other corporate leaders. Even though I’m retired I enjoyed reading it, and see it as a valuable resource for leaders in all areas, e.g., parent, teacher, pastor, military, supervisor, coach – even if not wanting to climb a corporate ladder.

As a young business professional (also in the Pharma industry), I remember being super excited to hear that PBS and Lisa Grimes had collaborated to write this book, but I had no idea how truly enlightening their overall message would be. I'm at a point in my career where achieving success, balance and fulfillment are crucial both professionally and personally. I really appreciated the individual letters from multiple accomplished leaders, expressing words of wisdom and motivation for their younger selves.Their insights provide a very clear visual as to why its extremely important to not get carried away with internal and external expectations and to simply "Remember Who You Are."This is a MUST-READ for the young and tenured professional, both women and men...those who are searching for inspiration and guidance in all stages of life/career. Thank you Paula and Lisa for expressing such a powerful memorandum.

Paula Brown Stafford and Lisa Grimes are former business competitors who decided to become colleagues, business partners and friends instead. Remember Who You Are is a powerful set of interwoven stories, written from the generous hearts of these two exceptional and successful women. As their stories unfold, the authors reveal the importance of identifying, defining and developing the qualities and character in ourselves that we want others to see and know, and about the critical need to focus on the quality of our relationships with everyone in our lives. Although the book is written from the perspective of women in business, there are valuable lessons for any person at any stage of career and life. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking to take their career to the next level, or anyone wanting experience-based advice on balancing work and life, keeping their integrity and improving their business relationships.

As a biopharmaceutical executive I found this book to be most helpful . Balancing a demanding career and family responsibilities is a challenge for both husbands and wives in a fast paced business environment. As a married father of 3 children the book was very enlightening to see this perspective from a female executives viewpoint. Excellent tips on staying true to your mission in both career and family. Definite read for both men and women as they move forward in their careers with keeping the priorities of family responsibilities at the top of their list along with a balance towards their careers.

As a man who is embarking on a new career in corporate America, I found these stories and lessons useful for me. The do your best, be your best focus of the book comes through clearly. Whether in business or life, these lessons are rich and powerful. The book is well written and is easy to relate to whether you are a man or a woman. Lisa and Paula share their experiences and lessons learned from hard knocks, successes and failures and as such they are completely credible. Their stories are told as if you are there with them when the events occur. I look forward to reading this again so that the lessons are engrained in me.

I have been privileged to have Paula and Lisa speak at two events for my ministry, Women with Purpose. How thankful I am that the wisdom they shared at those events is now readily at my fingertips in this book along with so much more! They model "Authentic Leadership" by sharing not just practical advice but also from their own stories with honesty and humility. I appreciate that it is clearly written and to the point in a way that's compelling and hard to put down. I know I will be buying copies to give to women in my life, especially ones who are just starting in their careers.

What an inspiring read! Excellent real life stories of success and hardships framed so the rest of us can take away valuable lessons. A wonderful reminder that we are all unique and. An be successful being true to ourselves. I will be giving this as gifts to many of my friends!
