Jungian writers are usually complex beings with complex language, a high level of education, abstraction and symbolic understanding. Probably that is why the attract like-minded people, but not everybody wanting to know a bit about Jung is prepared for the complexity and depth of Jungian everyday talk. If you know nothing about Jungian Psychology and want to start from the foundations without having to go through bothersome highly complex language, this is your book.This basic introduction has everything you need to know about Jung, the man, how his life and personality shaped his contribution to Psychology and Science in general, the basic concepts and themes of Jung's approach to the human psyche, mental illness, psychoanalytical practice, his troublesome relationship with Freud and his supposed pro-nazism. The chapter on Dreams perhaps the weakest part, mostly because the dreams chosen from Jung seem a bit complex and too symbolic for a book that tries to be approachable and addressed to the general public.The language used is concise, approachable with the bare minimum technicalities, yet, with enough depth to make you understand the basics on which to build your knowledge about Jung and Jungian Psychology.This is a good Kindle edition with good-quality photos, but the final index is not linked, unfortunately.

I have enjoyed a dozen books in the ‘Very Short Introduction’ series but I must say this one on Jung is the best I’ve come across. You will not find a clearer presentation of the life and psychology of Carl Jung. Quite an accomplishment since Jung’s approach to the psyche and therapy is revolutionary and multifaceted. Since the subjects covered in this short introduction are so rich in content, for the purposes of this review here are a few quotes along with my comments, starting with Jung’s break with his teacher and mentor in the world of psychoanalysis – Sigmund Freud.“As time passed, Jung’s differences with Freud became harder to conceal. Two of Freud’s basic assumptions were unacceptable to him: (1) that human motivation is exclusively sexual and (2) that the unconscious mind is entirely personal and peculiar to the individual.” ---------- Turns out, this is the difference for Jung that made all the difference. In Jung’s view, we humans have many reasons for doing what we do well beyond the boundaries of sexuality. And also, the human unconscious taps into the entire range of experiences we have developed as a species over millions of years“Moreover, beneath the personal unconscious of repressed wishes and traumatic memories, posited by Freud, Jung believed there lay a deeper and more important layer that he was to call the collective unconscious, which contained in potenitia the entire psychic heritage of mankind. . . . The existence of this ancient basis of the mind had first been hinted to him as a child when he realized that there were things in his dreams that came from somewhere beyond himself. Its existence was confirmed when he studied the delusions and hallucinations of schizophrenic patients and found them to contain symbols and images which also occurred in myths and fairy-tales all over the world. --------- Again, Jung acknowledged there is a personal component to the unconscious realm we encounter in our dreams, but this is only the start: there is an ocean of unconscious energy deeper and wider than the personal – the collective unconscious. Thus, Jung’s lifelong fascination with symbols, such as mandalas, numbers, mythic animals, light-infused and shadowy superhuman presences.“What distinguishes the Jungian approach to developmental psychology from virtually all others is the idea that even in old age we are growing toward realization of or full potential. . . . aging was not a process of inexorable decline but a time for the progressive refinement of what is essential. ‘The decisive question for a man is: is he related to something infinite or not?’ ---------- A critical difference from Freud: what happens in our psyche isn’t always about working out our relationship with our mother and father buried in our personal past; rather, every stage in the human cycle, childhood, adolescence, young adulthood, middle age, old age, has its own powerful psychic energies and challenges. It is our task to accept the challenges at each stage of our life to reach the full flowering of our humanity. Thus, for Jung, psychotherapy isn’t so much about curing illness as it is about personal growth.“Jung held it to be the business of the psychologist to investigate the collective unconscious and the functional units of which it is composed – the archetypes, as he eventually called them. Archetypes are ‘identical psychic structures common to all’, which together constitute ‘the archaic heritage of humanity’. ---------- The author devotes two entire chapters to Jung’s archetypes: the Self, the ego, the shadow, the persona, the anima/amimus. And, what is an archetype? By way of example, we read: “One example which Jung frequently quoted was that of a schizophrenic patient who told him that if he stared at the sun with half-closed eyes he would see that the sun had a phallus and that this organ was the origin of the wind. Years later Jung came across a Greek text describing an almost identical vision.’ In other words, the archetype images we encounter in dreams belong to a common dream language we share will all humans, including our prehistoric ancestors and peoples of all world cultures and societies. And, according to Jung, these archetypical images can be understood as promptings to encourage our growth.“In working on a dream the starting-point for Jung was not interpretation but ‘amplification’ – that is, to enter into the atmosphere of the dream to establish its mood as well as the detail of its images and symbols, in such a way as to amplify the experience of the dream itself. Then its impact on consciousness is enhanced. ---------- Dreams are central to Jungian analysis. And if you are interested in pursuing Jung’s vision of what it means to live a full human life, reading this small book would be a great place to start.

The Very Short Introduction runs the gamut in quality. This has to be the best in that I've read in the series. I claim this no only because it Stevens presents a very clear and accessible exposition of Jungian concepts and principles, but also because Stevens is a great writer. His writing rises to the level of literature in its expression and use of words and metaphors. You are therefore exposed not just to Jung's genius but also to Stevens' writing prowess. This book has encouraged not only to delve more into Jung but to do so as much as possible through Stevens.

While I studied some of Jung as an undergraduate years ago and have recently read three books written by Jung, this book has made Jung's theories the most concise and understandable to me. I certainly recommend it as the first book you should read about his theories. I would have understood more of Jung's theories had I read this before plunging into his writings, which are most often dense, liberally peppered with Latin phrases and phrases and rarified mythologies. As a retired college professor of English, I give it an A.

The perfect short introduction to the works and life of Carl Jung. It demystifies many of Jung's writings and briefly explains the origins of the enigmatic Red Book. Stevens humanizes his subject and brings the mysterious teachings of analytic psychology out of the mists for the casual reader. A fine introduction for students of psychology, literature, and mythology.

Interesting, but everything written should be taken with a grain of salt because it feels like she went through some of these religions so quickly. For instance, the Jehovah's Witnesses. As someone who grew up with that, I was concerned with the impression of them she shared, which was unfortunately, very short. She described the woman as "kind," however, what she experienced is an example of love bombing. I'm surprised she wasn't aware of this after she'd already been in a controlling religion. Jehovah's Witnesses are taught to make the religion look good. They will get in trouble if they fail to do so and they are even told that if someone dies at Armaeggedon because they turned them off, that blood could be on their hands. The kindness is not sincere. She also described the evangelizing as "selfless," however, this is not the case. They are taught to get as many "hours" of door knocking in as they can every month. If you are baptized and don't do this, you are considered a bad influence. Some are even so desperate for hours that they will lie or exaggerate on their time cards. People also want hours for bragging rights because door knocking is really the only thing Jehovah's Witnesses are allowed to pursue (no college or serious hobbies) so why wouldn't you want to share the one accomplishment you're allowed to have? Minus the electricity, it is comparable to being Amish in strictness and people don't realize this because of the "kindness" and love bombing which will disappear and turn into strict and formal shunning if you step out of line. It is a fundamental group and though they don't live in their own little communities, they might as well for how they are taught to isolate themselves and put up walls between themselves and all outsiders. I remember one of the most horrifying things growing up was being told that all these non-believers were going to die and that we were not to cry for them after Armaeggedon as birds fed on their corpses.I don't think the Witnesses are truly bad people, but they are lied to and manipulated by their leaders, who do well to cover up the secrets of their past, such as the fact that it is actually technically a sect (the original religion still exists), they have failed to predict the exact date of the end of the world several times, and more.Due to the author's interpretation of this group, I'm not sure what to make of any of her impressions, really. Because of that, I don't truly feel like I learned much. Still, I appreciate her sharing her experience. I just think people should know that some of these fundamentalist groups she explored have a history of emotional/psychological abuse and readers should know what they're actually getting into.

A very timely and honest book. I have PTCS. Your words, revealing your inner thoughts and emotions were thoughts and emotions I have experience. I could have initialed each one of them. I have read many books in my 68 years of living but never have come across one like yours. It is right on the money for so many today. Having spent over 25 years as an Ordained Minister in a Pentecostal Denomination, also growing up in a Pentecostal Ministers home, I have counseled so many but of course your not suppose to entertain the doubts your to re-direct their thoughts. Until I had my own horrible experience at a Mega-church and that all changed. If I were still counseling I would recommend this book to every single person struggling with the church drama. When someone mentions they are a Christian you become nauseated and the Christianese just sends you up a wall it's time for this book. Thank you for writing this book. If you are having doubts, questions and the whole thing is starting to make you sick, this is the book for you. 5 stars for sure.

I fell in love with this book almost instantly, this is a breath of fresh air. Coming from a cultish background, myself, I was blown away reading Reba's journey. So many things hit home in a way I have never experienced because it is generally not acceptable to speak out about religious trauma. Regardless of your religion, it seems there is always someone to tell you that "you're just bitter because your heart isn't in the right place." or "If you prayed hard enough..." or "well that was THAT church, you should try mine." So many people with answers, and not enough people with empathy. Not enough people to be understanding. Reading PTCS was like chicken soup for MY soul. Finally someone else to be honest! Someone else to not be ashamed of her truth. Even better, she walked a journey I can only hope to attempt one day. I am still in the place where the idea of entering a church makes my palms sweat, and my heart pound, and I am instantly prepared to defend myself. Maybe one day I can make peace, not only with my past, but with the idea of religion. Reba's writing made me feel like she is a kindred spirit to me (down to the frog pajamas). I have never met her, but I feel that she is a soul sister to so many people who have survived trauma... trauma from the one place we all were supposed to feel safe, loved and connected. I have been speaking out for years about my upbringing through my blog, unfortunately I am still in that very painful place. I am so happy to have a loving book to recommend to other's who seek out closure. I hope they can laugh, cry, have chills and feel a sense of connectedness just like I do.
