This is the most wonderful book for toddler behavior. Before discussing discipline, it addresses whether all of the needs of your toddler are met. Are they getting enough sleep? How to fix that. Are they getting a nutritious diet? How to fix that. Are they getting enough quality one on one time with each parent? How to help with that. Are they getting enough stimulation and activity? Ideas to fix that. Most of the behavioral problems disappeared from by children when I made some changes implementing these ideas. They few issues that remained were quickly taken care of with the loving discipline methods here. Firm and corrective, but focused on understanding and reinforcing love and affection every time. The best of both worlds when it comes to discipline. I have bought several of these to give as gifts, read it myself a year ago. Still applies to my children as they become older toddlers/young children.

This book is like an encyclopedia for toddler behavior and disciplinary problems! It has so many situations for toddlers of different ages and solutions on how to solve the different problems. Some of the situations don't apply to me (yet) but the ones that do give good advice. Every parent who's raising a toddler should have at least 3 books on discipline for toddlers and this is one of them. The other book I really like for discipline is 1-2-3 magic. The main thing I learned from this book besides the importance of routine is probably to cut back on television time and the different ways to provide mental stimulation for children of a certain age.

So far I have only implemented 2 of Jo's techniques, and the results are amazing. We cancelled a Disneyland trip because I reasoned that if I couldn't even take my toddler grocery shopping, there was no way we would be able to navigate Disneyland and come out with anyone having a good time.After a little less than a week working on only 2 different areas (our time out technique needed serious improvement, as did our discipline with sticking to a schedule), its like I have a different child. He has been wonderful. This week we are starting work on our bedtime routine, and who knows? Disneyland may be back on the table in a few months.Thank you, Jo!

I was having some difficulties figuring out how to deal with my toddler's tantrums. I was not being the parent I wanted to be. I borrowed this book from the library but had so many post-its in it that I knew I had to buy my own copy. Jo really knows what she's talking about (I read her book and two others at the same time and they had so much overlapping information - it was helpful to hear). I'd recommend this book to anyone with a toddler or who interacts with toddlers.

Yessssss. This is a great book. Straight forward with clear advice. I'm not sure that I'll implement everything (e.g. I'm torn on the "naughty chair"), but I have many, many new ideas to work with. I can imagine continuing to reference the techniques in this book as my toddler goes from being a little toddler to a big toddler and beyond.

This book was perfect for our family. I read and re-read many parts. I feel it changed my attitude and empowered me to handle tantrums and time outs like a pro. In particular the part on tantrums was most valuable. There are other parts about feeding and sleep that our family didn't need so much. I recommend this to all our friends, wish we would have gotten this soon (our son is almost 3, but I feel this is great for kids 1.5 to 4 years old).I do wish she had quick reference cards that I could hang on my friends that could have helped me remember the steps for each tantrum type in a pinch.

Excellent..I find myself a grandma again after more than 25 years and also a great grandma for the first time. I needed a refresher, updated course. If only Jo Jo had been around when my boys were toddlers, but I am sure she wasn't even born yet. I did see though, that I intuitively used many of her techniques. Please give to all new parents, a must

I agree with everything Jo discusses in the book. A healthy, happy child is as a result of the 5 points she discusses. The challenge is for us, as parents, to take the appropriate time to do these things. The tactics discussed in this book has already helped our family.

About the Author

James Fawcett read law at the University of Nottingham and qualified as a solicitor at a leading City of London firm. He became a lecturer at Bristol University in 1973, obtained a Ph.D. in 1980 and, after a year at the National University of Singapore, became a Professor at the University of Leicester in 1988. He became Professor of International Commercial Law at Nottingham in 1995. His major teaching and research interest is in private international law, especially the commercial aspects thereof. He is the co-author of one of the leading textbooks in the area, Cheshire and North's Private International Law (13 ed., 1999). He has been a Director of Studies and Professor at the Hague Academy of International Law. Janeen Carruthers joined the School of Law in 1999 as a Lecturer in Private Law, having previously worked as a Solicitor in private practice with Maclay, Murray & Spens, Solicitors. She graduated from the University of Glasgow LL.B. (Hons) (1994), Dip.L.P. (1995), and following a period of part-time study, Ph.D. (2002). Her doctoral research is in the field of International Private Law, under the title, Beyond the Ineluctable: An Examination of Choice of Law Rules in Property. In 2006, Dr Carruthers was appointed to a Readership in the Conflict of Laws, and her research interests now lie in all areas of International Private Law. Sir Peter North CBE QC was a Law Commissioner for England and Wales from 1976-1984 and was Principal of Jesus College, Oxford, from 1984-2005 and Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University from 1993-1997. He is also a fellow of the British Academy, a Member of the Institute of International Law, a QC (Honoris Causa) and an Honorary Bencher of the Inner Temple.

Through Talcott, he comments on issues of family, religion, law, education, race, marriage, wealth, and politics. I found the frequent philosophical digressions were some of the most interesting parts ofthe novel. Talcott has beliefs and values he tries to live by despite other influences. His life is not turning out as he planned and he is the pawn in the hands of his father's legacy, his wife's ambition, his sister's obsession with conspiracy theories, his brother's escape to Argentina, and his cousin's mental collapse.His father, a conservative Judge who has been disgraced during hearings for appointment to the Supreme Court, is found dead in his study and Talcott is charged from the grave to discover "arrangements" the honorable Judge Oliver Garland left behind. Through an intense and often violent search, Talcott deals with a disappearing scrapbook, two reappearing pawns, a mysterious delivery to a soup kitchen, and a stolen book of chess problems. However, I felt the great fault in the writing is that the narrator does not tell the reader everything he knows. Since vital information is revealed to the reader only in retrospect, Talcott's reasoning process and actions are often confusing and hard to follow. However, clearing up the mystery of how his father died and, more importantly, how he had lived, does make Talcott's story one worth telling.

Talcott Garland is a professor of law and the son of a former Federal Judge who stepped down from the bench amid much controversy. When Talcott, or Misha as his closest friends call him, receives word that his father has died, events start taking shape that lead to a fantastic mystery that only Misha has the key to solving.It seems that the late Judge has left a series of clues, or riddles, that Misha is tasked with solving in order to find out what the Judge's "arrangements" were. The problem? Misha has no idea what these arrangements are or where to start looking. But a number of well connected and threatening individuals seem to know all about them and are eager for Misha to uncover the secrets the Judge hid so well. All the while, Misha has to cope with his failing marriage, his fear for the safety of himself and his family, his seemingly selfish brother, and his conspiracy theorist sister. Misha feels pulled in a million different directions while at the same time trying to live up to the expectations of a father with whom he was never close. His wife is in the running for a judicial appointment and doesn't want him to dredge up anything controversal that will stand in her way. His colleagues begin to think that he has lost his mind as he continues his father's search and makes what seem to be wild accusations. But his personal debates are nothing compared with the element of evil that is lurking in the shadows of every twist and turn.In his debut work of fiction, Stephen Carter has written a cleverly crafted mystery that keeps the reader guessing as much as the chess moves described that underly the main story. He has created believable characters - some of which one loves, others one hates - that lend credence to the tale. He has also supplemented the mystery itself with the characters' own personal problems that make this a story about life as much as intrigue. My only fault with the novel is the discussion of race that is part of Misha's inner conflict. Misha makes many observations about black versus white and often is angered at his perceptions about disadvantages he suffers as a black man. While the author and his characters are certainly entitled to their opinions and feelings, this aspect adds nothing to the story of the novel. At times it just makes Misha seem bitter about race, but it never relates to the overall plot. I kept waiting for race to tie in to the mystery aspect of the book, but it never did and ultimately served as a distraction.Overall, however, the novel was a well written and suspenseful mystery that keeps the reader guessing up to the last pages. But it was more than a mystery in it's look at human dynamics, what money and power can do to a person, and how important family can be, even in it's most disfunctional form.

Great read. Couldn't put the book down! I loved the way the writer suspensefully revealed aspects of African American life from the point of view of a middle class academic - lifting cultural layers, revealing throughout, the impact of parental influence, the impact of race relations in academia, cultural legacy and the universal challenge of living a moral life. The Martha's Vineyard setting was brilliant. I just returned from Martha's Vineyard and was pleasantly reminded of visiting many of the places he noted.

This is my second time purchasing this book. It has some many levels that I only remembered the basic plot. After reading it again, I am still clinging to the end of each chapter wanting to know what is next. Well written with background details that round out the plot! I am a big fan of Mr. S. L. Carter. Please, write some more fiction; I am reading to engage!

The writing, the use of language is all that kept me going. I enjoyed the author's writing. I quit several times, though, because I couldn't find the plot. I couldn't even guess the genre. I kept coming back to it because in some ways it was pleasant to read. But the characters were too slow to develop; I never came to care for anyone. I didn't know if it was a mystery or a character study or what. It was NOT a thriller. I finally cut my losses and quit. A more patient person would probably like it better than I did.

I was unable to read this book, because of the lack of contrast with background and print.

I’m generally an picky eater and therefore wary of cookbooks, but something about this book got my attention. I got it today and immediately decided I was going to make the mushroom and beef stew with ale. It’s currently simmering, and making my house smell lovely. I can’t wait to try the other recipes.

Wow after reading this cookbook I am please with its simplicity. Each recipe is marked with prep time and cook time along with labels for gluten free, vegetarian, etc. No calorie counts but she thought about everything else. Well laid out. If you don't want to go with store bought marinara or chicken stock, the back chapter has full recipes. I love that! I want to make just about all the recipes in this book! Can't wait to try a few. I've had my Dutch oven in storage after my move so I am bringing it from the basement to the kitchen tonight!

Lisa has been running her food blog for over 10 years and her focus on just recipes for a Dutch Oven in this terrific cookbook shows in the range and interest of the 101 easy home style cooking recipes. The recipes can take as long as 45 minutes to make, but as she reflects on her mother’s cooking style they are “hands-off” meaning whoever cooks dinner tonight can spend time with family and not hovering over the stove top stirring.Her introduction is short. She starts off Chapter 1 with an ode to the Dutch Oven as “The One-Pot Wonder.” I completely agree with her about how versatile and wonderful this one cooking vehicle is, often making numerous other pans and pots superfluous. This means, yes, it really is a great gift for college kids, young grads, house warming, engagement gifts and for young cooks just learning to prepare meals, not just muffins and cookies. Because of the scale of my SOLID enamel covered caste iron pot, it IS heavy and therefore just a bit cumbersome to weld in the sink when cleaning, but it’s really not terrible. Just, it’s a sizeable and heavy pot. This chapter is very helpful for new and just-starting out cooks in her cover of the basics of your pantry and including citing such really basic knowledge items like oven mitts and making a grocery shopping list. More experienced cooks could skip most of what’s in this chapter.There’s absolutely no nutritional information cited with the recipes, and they are, for the most part, high-carb, high-starch items, so I really wanted to know so I could make some adjustments. Additionally, she included a recipe devoting a whole page to making popcorn in a Dutch Oven. I guess she has a gas stove. Doing so on Electric would be more time consuming to heat cast iron and the oil just right so it doesn’t smoke. This is something she could simply have alluded to in an introduction to the snacks recipes section and devoted the page to an actual recipe. Unless you’re under 10 years old, making stove top pop corn is pretty easy to do. And, with the very few photos in this cookbook, whoever picked the illustrating images had the gall to illustrate the popcorn and not a real recipe for that chapter.In addition to no nutritional information and very few photo images, the recipes are mostly high-carb and high starch. Plus, they didn’t even include variations or more complex carb alternatives in the recipes like using a complex carb pasta or spiralized zucchini instead. Not sure those would work for everything. Just I wish they’d said something about either/both of those periodically.The chapter devoted to breakfast was very carb focused, which is a bit traditional with breakfasts. I wish she’d devoted some coverage to a few more egg/protein based breakfast casserole dishes. Just as she emphasizes in her introduction Ode to the Dutch Oven coverage, one of the beauty attributes of a Dutch Oven is you can use it both stove-top AND in the oven. It was when I was ready her recipe for stove top based home made granola that I realized there was no nutrition information. Some other cookbooks where the ingredients were so simple and straight forward, I could still approximate, and it didn’t bother me like it does here. Without knowing the sugar count and everything else, I have no basis to make this safely for my family nor the baseline from which to tweak it.I did appreciate a recipe for making a Rotisserie Style chicken in the Dutch oven as well, a few more variations I would have thought would have been easy to mention and aren’t included, as her having a Vegetarian Dishes chapter and citing to use fresh not frozen in the Veggie Medley recipe on page 32. The Crab Cakes recipe looks great. I haven’t had the chance to make it yet because real crab meat, not the faux stuff which never tastes right to me, isn’t readily available where I am. The cassoulet looks great as does the Split Pea soup. The later isn’t my thing, but my fiancé and BIL both adore it, so I may make them a batch to stock the fridge and freezer with some quick reheat meals.The recipes are still good, and this could be useful for a new cook or grad student living on a budget leaning on cheap speggie noodles (not the fresh gnocci recipe so much for them), bread, and potatoes. It’s a little bit of an obstacle to aim to give this to a young person or new cook, because someone is learning the basics she covers, they should also start to familiarize themselves with the nutritious information of what’s being made at the same time.If you’re giving a Dutch Oven to someone starting out their home, this would make a good accompanying present to build it out to a helpful Starter Home gift.I hope you found my review helpful for you in selecting this book for yourself or as a gift to a new cook. First of all, I have to say, I am a Dutch Oven lover! When I have cooked with dutch ovens over coals, there is nothing like the flavor of the food that is cooked this way. Now, move over hot coals, welcome to the beauty of cast iron cookware in the kitchen.There is some good beginning information such as Why Dutch Oven cooking is so great, care and maintenance, how to choose the right equipment and lots of good information to help you with learning this style of cooking.There is the 5- tool kitchen, the 5-ingredient pantry, staples and shopping lists, and then the meat of the book - The Recipes.The book is divided into 10 different chapters:Dutch Oven BasicsBreakfast & BrunchSnacks, Apps & SlidesMains: BeefMains: Chicken & TurkeyMains: Pork & LambMains: Fish & ShellfishMains: VegetarianBreads & DessertsStaples & SaucesThe author has also included the list of the Dirty Dozen & Clean Fifteen foods, Measurement Conversions, and Recipe Index.Some of the recipes just are mouth-watering such as teh Ham, Swiss, Spinach and Mushroom Frittata. One of my favorites is the Roasted Veggie Medley with Brown Butter and Garlic. The recipe only calls ofr Brussels sprouts, broccoli and carrots, but I love this with sweet potatoes, cauliflower, and asparagus. But that is the beauty of the recipes, you can customize them to fit your tastes.Another recipe that is very tasty (but not healthy in any way) is the homemade peach cobbler. Cobblers do very well in dutch oven cooking. Roasts are very good as well, covered with onions, vegetables and stock.The recipes are very easy to follow and they turn out tasting so good! The Chicken Tortellini Soup is very good. It is definitely worth your while to try this book.I did receive a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my unbiased review. I would highly recommend this cookbook.

Get in my belly! I'm a sucker for easy recipes and I was sold on this cookbook before I ever tried a recipe. 5 ingredients or less? Sign me up! I also have a dutch oven that I have RARELY used, so I was excited to dust it off and try it out again. There are oven 100 recipes in this bad boy and I've already tried out 5. Granted I can't use like half (I'm vegetarian), but the ones I could use were MONEY! They even have a whole vegetarian section (some of which were even vegan)! Besides using the vegetarian section I was able to pull recipes from the breakfast & brunch, snacks, & sides, breads & desserts, and staples & sauces. Options man! Some great recipes include: buttery mashed potatoes with chive, creamy spinach-Parmesan dip, veggie fried rice, savory fried cabbage and noodles, peach cobbler, and cornbread! All in a dutch oven! My only two "complaints" are: lack of pictures and not all recipes are truly 5 ingredients are less. The author doesn't includes seasoning and oils, so some recipes are closer to 10 ingredients. That wouldn't stop me from purchasing this book though! I loved it!

This book is good, but not great. It has the potential to be great, but needs a little more depth. For example, the book has a section on employing family. It even positions this as one of the most important and advantageous strategies. I think this section is about 5 pages and doesn't talk at all about the spouse, only kids. There is sooooo much more to talk about that isn't covered. Sandy Botkin's book is a lot more mature when it comes to tax strategies.This book is strong in general legal guidance which is important. Thus, if you want to do this right, you're going to have to read 3 books: This one, Botkin's book, and Nolo's books about small business taxes (example: Deduct It).Overall, this is a good book and should be required reading. Its a little shallow in places, but still important.

Awesome book for every entrepreneur at least, even more if you are not familiar with USA legislation, will walk you through several scenarios and could potentially save you thousands of dollars just by doing things the right way, plus saving you a lot of trouble, I also got a 1 hour consultation with the author, which was very helpful as well. 100% recommended

The book teaches you a lot about running your own business without leaving it in the hands of an accountant or attorney. Of course you need those two experts and more but there are things in this book and other books from Mark that not even my accountant told me about. Its definitely an eye opener for new business owners but especially for seasoned owners like myself.

I used to feel fearful and intimidated by this type of information, until I came across Mark Kohler. He explains tax and legal strategies in a way that is not only instructive, but also entertaining. I mean, isn't this stuff supposed to be boring? The fact is, taxes are one of the largest expenses we will ever have, and asset protection is becoming more and more critical in today's legal environment. Thank you, Mark Kohler for showing me that it's not only how much you make, but how much you keep. I not only highly recommend this book, but I also b ought 20 copies because I believe everyone MUST read it.

I saw Mark speak twice to two different San Diego investment clubs in the past 8 months or so. The first time was so good I went out of my way to see him a second time at a club that I normally don't attend. He somehow manages to make talking about accounting and tax issues fun and funny, probably because he is comfortable in his own skin, cracks a lot of jokes, and embraces his own inner dorkiness if you will. :) I read his first two books and gleaned quite a bit from them, when I saw that this third books was available, I bought the kindle version the first day and read the brunt of it over a weekend.I think this is his best book to date. He has the ability to take what can be complex subjects and boil them down to the nuts & bolts to get you started. I think many people who get into real estate or start a small business spend so much time thinking about their product, they neglect to look at the tax and legal consequences of various strategies or of, worse, not really having a strategy. In today's litigious environment, it would be insane to do business without the proper protections in place, and Mark does a very good job of explaining the pros and cons of various legal entities and which entities are best suited to which types of businesses.There is a saying by one of the original real estate speakers that if you think education is expensive, just try ignorance. In this case, the $9.99 kindle version price is absurdly cheap for the education he imparts, many of the tips in the book could save you thousands of dollars or even avoid you getting ruined in a lawsuit.I highly recommend this book, especially for those getting started in their own business/real estate who haven't established any asset protection plan. Great stuff!

(quickstudy.com) and laminated it. The combinations equation above should have been written, nCk = n!/(k!(n-k)!) and specified without regard to order. My version is in equation format without the divisor outside parentheses.For the central and inscribed angle, I drew a picture defining the angles. One picture is worth a thousand words.So what, the author never heard of MS Word, Equation or Shapes?This minimum effort publication is at best an indication of some of the topics you should review somewhere else to prepare for the GRE. At worst, it's a confusing, incomplete compilation of formulas you'll have to research elsewhere.That's right, it's not even complete. What about probability? What about Triangle (30,60,90): 3,4,5 in addition to 1,sqrt(3),2? What about weighted averages? How about the ratio of similitude and ratio of areas? What about polynomial multiplication ... direct and inverse proportion ... finding factors ... translating functions ... the list goes on. In fact, I can't help but wonder if the author has ever taken the GRE.The idea behind quick study math guides is to save time researching ideas and formulas. This publication (all 9 pages of it, about half is white space) misses the mark by a long shot. By the way, I put everything I needed for GRE math topics on two sides of a letter sized sheet of paper!I had hoped to pick up some ideas I might have missed when I put together my study guide; nope, not one good idea from this shoddy effort. I can honestly say, I wasted my money.

Part of a 10 yr old's b-day gift She hasn't been out of her room in almost a week practicing.

This book was written in such an organized way. It showed numbered pictures of finished beaded embroidery designs on the left side of the page, and on the right side it showed how to do those designs that correspond to the numbered designs on the left. It had many illustrations, it showed basic and advanced designs, materials and tools, needles, It showed finished projects. I could go on and on. I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to try beaded embroidery. It made something that looks complicated, easy.

This is a lovely little book that would be useful for any beader. I would particularly recommend it for beginners, but I think it would be useful at any skill level. Starting her book with the basics of bead embroidery the author then gives us about 150 designs, using many basic stitches which will already be familiar to most readers, such as Lazy Daisy, Cross, Feather, Cretan and Filling stitches.The illustrations in the book are really outstanding. The author provides very clear photos, in color, of the finished stitches and motifs followed by carefully drawn diagrams of the process of forming these stitches and motifs. She also gives us a cross stitch alphabet incorporating beads and a list of the beads and threads used in the illustrations if you should wish to use her color combinations.If you ever thought about bead embroidery but were not certain if it was for you this is the book you need.

This book is the best yet that I've bought on Amazon on beading and embroidery (and I've bought a few). The clean style of the layout and the instructional photography is the best. I have been exploring Japanese craft and quilt books lately, and because I learn visually, I am so grateful for these young designers and these types of books. They manage to show the steps via photos versus using a ton of words to explain each step. Yasuko Endo has done an excellent job and many thanks to her and the CRK group. (Interweave, take note. I LOVE that you published this book. More Japanese books should be translated into English for the craft market. Was this originally in Japanese? Some of the translations are a bit awkward in the text in the book, but good for you for making books like this available in English...Maybe you could do Yoko Saito's "Daily Quilt" next! I've ordered the Japanese copy translated into Chinese, since I couldn't find the French copy; I'm hoping it will be as easy to follow as this book is in terms of visual instruction...if not, I'll have to figure it out; I love a challenge!) This book was worth every penny I spent on it. Can't wait to gather together the tools and fabric to get started on my own stitch samples. If you love to embroider and embellish with beads, you will appreciate this book.

I specifically researched and bought this book to jazz up historical costumes that I sew to give them that extra finishing touch. I am using a combination of machine stitching for coverage areas and motifs then hand stitching borders and over the machine stitching to add authenticity and this guide helps me add beads into the mix to add texture. I wish I had purchased this sooner. The format is standard for Japanese zakka handicraft guides and this one focuses almost exclusively on borders/running/outline stitches. The section on motif embroidery is brief and is covered in a separate book by the same publisher.Keep in mind this book is for "folk" embroidery but it is not a guide in any way to doing high-fashion couture beading.

This is a beginning bead embroidery book and shows you the "how to" from the simplest to more complex borders and designs... giving you clear illustrations and pictures each step along the way. Great book with lots of ideas on how you might use these cute bead borders and designs to embellish clothing and accessories. It incorporates beads in well known embroidery stitches like straight stitch, cross stitch, lazy daisy and chain, buttonhole and blanket stitch, herringbone and cretan stitch and many others. There's even a chart showing which needle and thread size to use with each size/type of bead.

This book is very complete and easy to use. It has color pics in the front section and an overview of the stitches. The back section explains the stitches further. Each section has nice diagrams to follow. Good resource for experienced or beginner stitchers. I think the experienced can learn some new things from it and the the beginner, it will become a great go-to resource.

I thought this book will have only few examples. But on the contrary it has so many like an encyclopedia of stitches and examples of how you can embroider with beads. And once you start there are so many possibilities that you will never end.Great pictures, good examples and the best of all the instructions are like guides to learn, are well written and explained.I'll recommend buying this book first among other bead embroidery ones, and then you'll never put it down.

Got this for myself as I have checked it out of the library twice before and used it it. The directions are pretty clear and the patterns are wonderful - it's nice to dress up purchased items quickly. the first simple project took less than an hour. I did the simplest pattern around the neckline of a tee for me. Finding the right material in my stash that would work took longer than the stitching - LOL. I would do this again, and now I own the book , I can choose any pattern I like!

Since I am a bit of a nerd (ok, maybe a big nerd) I really enjoyed the ideas behind this book. It was interesting, as I read it, to see parallels with our dependency and fascination with technology and the internet. With the advent, and more universal acceptance, of Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality devices (think Oculus unit and Microsoft's HoloLens) it is not too much of a stretch to believe we could someday find ourselves spending more time in a "virtual" world than our own. That is the case for Michael and his friends in this story. They find themselves more attached to the VirtNet, as it is called, and less attached to the real world.James Dashner does a great job of making the reader care about his main protagonist right off the bat and we begin to get caught up in Michael's "adventure" pretty quickly. Its hard to explain the entire book without getting into too many spoilers. The pace is nice, but at times gets bogged down with too much technical information about the VirtNet and its "worlds". But, I was never bored and looked forward to getting back to reading about what would happen next.In all honesty I was not a big fan of the Maze Runner Series. I actually prefer the movies over the books on that one, which is a rarity for me. But The Eye Of Minds really captured my attention and kept me wanting for more. I have moved on to the final book in the series and have enjoyed each one a little more than the first, which is saying something. The second book was really great.This is a great launching pad for the series though and if you like the YA type of books with a technical and "futuristic" twist then you can't go wrong with this series. Give it a try!

NO SPOILERS!This book was good, but could have been much better.I went into this book expecting something at least somewhat similar to the Maze Runner, but didn't quite get what I was expecting.While this book IS good compared to others out there on the market, it didn't quite live up to the Maze Runner, or even the 13th Reality books.The following is an outline of the overall pros and cons of this book:PROS:~ VERY unique idea. I've never seen anything like it before.~ Had the same kind of teen-appropriate "gritty" feel that the Maze Runner contained.~ Had SOME action, but not nearly as much as the Maze Runner.~ Really opens your eyes to the "dangers" of the digital age we're now entering.~ Contained themes that will make me look at the world differently in the future.~ Had a MIND-BLOWINGLY crazy conclusion, that will leave readers DYING for the second book.CONS:~ Flimsy characters. By the end of the book I could only really tell you two things about the character's personal life: his name and his age.~ Didn't contain quite as much action as the Maze Runner or 13th Reality books.~ Plot driven. This CAN be an advantage to some people, but I personally prefer character driven books~ Didn't really contain a climax. The "climax" wasn't really that exciting.~ From the middle of the book, to about 10 pages before the book ends, it is mostly boring.~ Had a bunch of jumbled scenes that didn't really flow together.FINAL ANALYSIS:While some people may appreciate this book, I think the majority of Maze Runner fans will be quite disappointed. The only thing that redeemed it and made me give it 3 stars instead of 2 is a piece of shocking information that is discovered in the last 5 pages of the book. (Don't worry, I won't tell you what it is.)Because of this ONE BIT OF INFORMATION, this author completely redeemed this book, and gives the rest of the series promise.While I didn't care much for this installment, I will definitely read the 2nd book in the series.To sum things up, this book was a disappointment, but it wasn't ALL bad. And if you're a Maze Runner fan, you'll likely feel the same.I DO recommend that you read this book, because the rest of the series shows promise, just don't expect to be blown away by this one.-Mark LeGrand Messick, bestselling author

I really like James Dashner's writing, and was excited to read the first installment in The Mortality Doctrine series. The Eye of Minds was very different from my usual reads: it's about high-intensity virtual gaming. I'm not a gamer, but I still really enjoyed this unique, imaginative, thrilling book.Michael is a gamer, and not just any gamer; he's an expert hacker. In Michael's world, he and his friends spend more time in the VirtNet than in the real world. Their gaming systems are a little odd: they have these coffins that they lie in to enter the VirtNet. The coffins are equipped with technology that allows them to feel everything that's happening in the game. So, if they get hurt while gaming, they feel it in their bodies. Everything feels real, which makes the gaming experience more exciting than real life. The premise of the coffins and gaming having a real impact on the gamer's body was unique and well-executed, if a bit creepy.Like Dashner's other books, The Eye of Minds is told in a first person narrative with Michael as the narrator. There is no love story at all; which is typical for Dashner. These attributes would appeal to a male readership, however they didn't keep me from enjoying The Eye of Minds.As is custom for Dashner's novels, The Eye of Minds was full of fantastic imagery. I felt like I was really on The Path with Michael and his friends. There were parts of this book that completely freaked me out: no ghosts, but enough scary things to keep me thinking about them after I finished reading.The story moved at a good pace, and held my interest. I was shocked at the twist at the end---so shocked I must have read that passage three times. I couldn't believe how the story ended, and now I'm really excited to read book two, The Rule of Thoughts.
