Amazon.com Review

In 1927, Walter Evans-Wentz published his translation of an obscure Tibetan Nyingma text and called it the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Popular Tibetan teacher Sogyal Rinpoche has transformed that ancient text, conveying a perennial philosophy that is at once religious, scientific, and practical. Through extraordinary anecdotes and stories from religious traditions East and West, Rinpoche introduces the reader to the fundamentals of Tibetan Buddhism, moving gradually to the topics of death and dying. Death turns out to be less of a crisis and more of an opportunity. Concepts such as reincarnation, karma, and bardo and practices such as meditation, tonglen, and phowa teach us how to face death constructively. As a result, life becomes much richer. Like Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, Sogyal Rinpoche opens the door to a full experience of death. It is up to the reader to walk through. --Brian Bruya

I read this book nearly 20 years ago and remember sobbing after finishing it. I couldn't put my finger on it then, but now realize that I was sensing the depth to which it would effect me and my life. Out of a desire to "come back to" my old Self -- one I have sorely missed lately -- I recently decided to read this book again. (I needed a new copy so that I could make fresh highlights and notations.) I'm amazed to see from where SO many of my "leanings," beliefs, and core values had come. This book had clearly laid the foundation for most -- if not all -- of my long-held interest in/study of alternative medicine and energy healing -- tools I've relied upon and successfully used for nearly two decades. More than that, this book rooted my understanding of "the way things work" in the universe and blended with the teachings of my Christian upbringing to provide me with a rich and unique perspective on how to navigate life and it's challenges. I'll tell you a secret (and non-believers may find this a fluke): Since re-starting this book two weeks ago, I've had many strange and wonderful synchronicities occur that have validated my re-discovering it. Re-reading it seems to be like hitting the "reset" button -- putting me back into the natural flow of life and returning me to the happier, more peaceful person I once was. I wish the same for you as you begin your own journey with Sogyal Rinpoche's masterpiece.

A friend recommended this to me when my mother went into hospice care. From the moment I started reading it, I was powerfully impacted, as if my eyes were being opened. Then, when my mother died much more quickly than was expected, this book continued to empower me through the process - not just of letting go - but the deeper process of understanding the very nature of life and death. My compassion, ability to forgive and my love increased powerfully. During the holiday season, I gave copies of this book to my husband, who is also being profoundly impacted by it, and friends. Now I'm thinking about ordering more copies, for family and friends. I consider this book a MUST READ for EVERYONE! .

My mother was dying. It was inevitable that the process couldn’t be reversed. She was suffering, she was frightened and it was clear that she needed emotional and physical help during her dying process.I was confused, helpless and full of fear. That time I started to read The Book of Living and Dying. This book clearly explains what a dying person needs, how to help him or her to make the process as easy as possible. I started to make some simple meditation exercises that are recommended in the book.3 weeks later I sat at her death bed, holding her hand. None of us was frightened. We felt peace, calm and love. She passed away in peace. In her last hours she told: “I am going home now.”The most important revelation I have gained from this book was how to see life and death as one whole unit. This means we can start preparing for dying while we are living our everyday life. We can understand from this book that living and dying are parts of the same natural process. The book describes buddhist teachings but it was written for the western world. It can be understood and accepted by non-buddhists and even for non-religious persons (like my mother and I).I recommand this book for those who are facing to help somebody in their dying processes and for those who are ready to prepare themselves for their own dying. This means to make a 20-30 minutes meditation exercise every day. The book is especially recommended for those healers who regularly deal with dying persons. It is clear from this book that handling death as a taboo like in the western societies, is harmful for the individuals and for the society as well. We have to speak about death as a normal process, as a natural part of our lives!

My wife is writing this review, since she is the person who ordered it:After all the accolades surrounding this book and because of my interest in Tibetan Buddhism, I was eager to read this book. I found the first half satisfying and informative; however, when I reached the part about the necessity of submission to and total trust in one's master/guru, and the Djoghen practice, I became uneasy. I decided to research Buddhist masters, and I came upon several articles about the author Sogyal Rinpoche. According to a 2017 article in U.K.'s Telegraph, this enlightened person appears to have been tempted by the excesses of the West, becoming verbally and physically abusive to followers, demanding sex from female students, and generally living a lifestyle that is the antithesis of Buddhist teachings. I regret adding to his fortune by buying this book, and I encourage other potential buyers to do a bit of research before ordering. Please know that I am in no way criticizing the practice of Buddhism in general or Tibetan Buddhism in particular. There is much merit in its teachings. There are many honorable teachers to learn from, and I intend to pursue my interest with others. For me, however, I simply cannot read another word from this book.

I'm 70-years old, and in all that time, I've read hundreds of self help books. But THIS one is definitely "a cut above." It is, quite honestly, without peer, anytime, anywhere. Although I'm entering the last chapter of my life, believe me, this magnificent volume is "must" reading for ANYONE, regardless of age, or place in life. And don't let the name scare you... this book is the single best book I've ever read on the art and science of LIVING. I only wish I didn't take so long to finally pick it up and read it. It is an essential guidebook for the rest of your life, surprisingly easy to read and fantastically well-written. KUDOS to everyone responsible for getting this important teaching and information out to the American public:)
