About the Author

James Fawcett read law at the University of Nottingham and qualified as a solicitor at a leading City of London firm. He became a lecturer at Bristol University in 1973, obtained a Ph.D. in 1980 and, after a year at the National University of Singapore, became a Professor at the University of Leicester in 1988. He became Professor of International Commercial Law at Nottingham in 1995. His major teaching and research interest is in private international law, especially the commercial aspects thereof. He is the co-author of one of the leading textbooks in the area, Cheshire and North's Private International Law (13 ed., 1999). He has been a Director of Studies and Professor at the Hague Academy of International Law. Janeen Carruthers joined the School of Law in 1999 as a Lecturer in Private Law, having previously worked as a Solicitor in private practice with Maclay, Murray & Spens, Solicitors. She graduated from the University of Glasgow LL.B. (Hons) (1994), Dip.L.P. (1995), and following a period of part-time study, Ph.D. (2002). Her doctoral research is in the field of International Private Law, under the title, Beyond the Ineluctable: An Examination of Choice of Law Rules in Property. In 2006, Dr Carruthers was appointed to a Readership in the Conflict of Laws, and her research interests now lie in all areas of International Private Law. Sir Peter North CBE QC was a Law Commissioner for England and Wales from 1976-1984 and was Principal of Jesus College, Oxford, from 1984-2005 and Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University from 1993-1997. He is also a fellow of the British Academy, a Member of the Institute of International Law, a QC (Honoris Causa) and an Honorary Bencher of the Inner Temple.

Carter, a Yale law professor and distinguished conservative African-American intellectual known for his nonfiction (The Culture of Disbelief), has written a first-rate legal thriller guaranteed to broaden his audience. The narrator, Talcott Garland, is a law professor at Elm Harbor University whose occasional Carteresque editorializing about politics and justice are saved from didacticism by his abiding existential loneliness. The mystery at the heart of the novel stems from Tal's father's disgrace: Judge Oliver Garland (a Robert Bork meets Clarence Thomas type) was nominated by Ronald Reagan for a Supreme Court seat, but brought down in the Senate hearings when it was revealed that he had a friendship with Jack Ziegler, a wild-card former CIA agent now rumored to be an organized crime kingpin. When the judge dies of what looks like a heart attack and Ziegler turns up at his funeral, Tal is initiated into a quest to uncover mysterious "arrangements" his father made in the event of his untimely demise. Various shady entities observe Tal chasing down the judge's clues, which include a cryptic note ("you have little time.... Excelsior! It begins!") and derive from chess strategy. Meanwhile, Talcott is going through a rough patch: his wife, Kimmer, a high-powered attorney, is probably cheating on him, his Elm Harbor law school colleagues are suspicious of him and a fake FBI man is following him around. Stephen L. Carter has woven a suspenseful novel of a man unraveling the mystery connected to his father's death. But this is more than a thriller; it is a novel about families and the things that bring them together and tear them apart; the secrets they keep from one another and the rest of the world; the legacies they pass from one generation to the next.Carter is an African-American law professor as is his main character, Talcott Garland. Through Talcott, he comments on issues of family, religion, law, education, race, marriage, wealth, and politics. I found the frequent philosophical digressions were some of the most interesting parts ofthe novel. Talcott has beliefs and values he tries to live by despite other influences. His life is not turning out as he planned and he is the pawn in the hands of his father's legacy, his wife's ambition, his sister's obsession with conspiracy theories, his brother's escape to Argentina, and his cousin's mental collapse.His father, a conservative Judge who has been disgraced during hearings for appointment to the Supreme Court, is found dead in his study and Talcott is charged from the grave to discover "arrangements" the honorable Judge Oliver Garland left behind. Through an intense and often violent search, Talcott deals with a disappearing scrapbook, two reappearing pawns, a mysterious delivery to a soup kitchen, and a stolen book of chess problems. Will he be able to fit all the pieces of the puzzle together and checkmate the opposition? Will the decades old hit-and-run death of his baby sister ever be resolved? Will the notorious underworld figure truly protect him, and at what price?From the ivory tower of a Yale-like Law School to the often peaceful resort of Martha's Vineyard and a secluded condo in Aspen, the reader follows Talcott in his search for the truth. However, I felt the great fault in the writing is that the narrator does not tell the reader everything he knows. Since vital information is revealed to the reader only in retrospect, Talcott's reasoning process and actions are often confusing and hard to follow. However, clearing up the mystery of how his father died and, more importantly, how he had lived, does make Talcott's story one worth telling.

Talcott Garland is a professor of law and the son of a former Federal Judge who stepped down from the bench amid much controversy. When Talcott, or Misha as his closest friends call him, receives word that his father has died, events start taking shape that lead to a fantastic mystery that only Misha has the key to solving.It seems that the late Judge has left a series of clues, or riddles, that Misha is tasked with solving in order to find out what the Judge's "arrangements" were. The problem? Misha has no idea what these arrangements are or where to start looking. But a number of well connected and threatening individuals seem to know all about them and are eager for Misha to uncover the secrets the Judge hid so well. All the while, Misha has to cope with his failing marriage, his fear for the safety of himself and his family, his seemingly selfish brother, and his conspiracy theorist sister. Misha feels pulled in a million different directions while at the same time trying to live up to the expectations of a father with whom he was never close. His wife is in the running for a judicial appointment and doesn't want him to dredge up anything controversal that will stand in her way. His colleagues begin to think that he has lost his mind as he continues his father's search and makes what seem to be wild accusations. But his personal debates are nothing compared with the element of evil that is lurking in the shadows of every twist and turn.In his debut work of fiction, Stephen Carter has written a cleverly crafted mystery that keeps the reader guessing as much as the chess moves described that underly the main story. He has created believable characters - some of which one loves, others one hates - that lend credence to the tale. He has also supplemented the mystery itself with the characters' own personal problems that make this a story about life as much as intrigue. My only fault with the novel is the discussion of race that is part of Misha's inner conflict. Misha makes many observations about black versus white and often is angered at his perceptions about disadvantages he suffers as a black man. While the author and his characters are certainly entitled to their opinions and feelings, this aspect adds nothing to the story of the novel. At times it just makes Misha seem bitter about race, but it never relates to the overall plot. I kept waiting for race to tie in to the mystery aspect of the book, but it never did and ultimately served as a distraction.Overall, however, the novel was a well written and suspenseful mystery that keeps the reader guessing up to the last pages. But it was more than a mystery in it's look at human dynamics, what money and power can do to a person, and how important family can be, even in it's most disfunctional form.

Great read. Couldn't put the book down! I loved the way the writer suspensefully revealed aspects of African American life from the point of view of a middle class academic - lifting cultural layers, revealing throughout, the impact of parental influence, the impact of race relations in academia, cultural legacy and the universal challenge of living a moral life. The Martha's Vineyard setting was brilliant. I just returned from Martha's Vineyard and was pleasantly reminded of visiting many of the places he noted.

This is my second time purchasing this book. It has some many levels that I only remembered the basic plot. After reading it again, I am still clinging to the end of each chapter wanting to know what is next. Well written with background details that round out the plot! I am a big fan of Mr. S. L. Carter. Please, write some more fiction; I am reading to engage!

The writing, the use of language is all that kept me going. I enjoyed the author's writing. I quit several times, though, because I couldn't find the plot. I couldn't even guess the genre. I kept coming back to it because in some ways it was pleasant to read. But the characters were too slow to develop; I never came to care for anyone. I didn't know if it was a mystery or a character study or what. It was NOT a thriller. I finally cut my losses and quit. A more patient person would probably like it better than I did.

I was unable to read this book, because of the lack of contrast with background and print.

I’m generally an picky eater and therefore wary of cookbooks, but something about this book got my attention. I got it today and immediately decided I was going to make the mushroom and beef stew with ale. It’s currently simmering, and making my house smell lovely. I can’t wait to try the other recipes.

Wow after reading this cookbook I am please with its simplicity. Each recipe is marked with prep time and cook time along with labels for gluten free, vegetarian, etc. No calorie counts but she thought about everything else. Well laid out. If you don't want to go with store bought marinara or chicken stock, the back chapter has full recipes. I love that! I want to make just about all the recipes in this book! Can't wait to try a few. I've had my Dutch oven in storage after my move so I am bringing it from the basement to the kitchen tonight!

Lisa has been running her food blog for over 10 years and her focus on just recipes for a Dutch Oven in this terrific cookbook shows in the range and interest of the 101 easy home style cooking recipes. The recipes can take as long as 45 minutes to make, but as she reflects on her mother’s cooking style they are “hands-off” meaning whoever cooks dinner tonight can spend time with family and not hovering over the stove top stirring.Her introduction is short. She starts off Chapter 1 with an ode to the Dutch Oven as “The One-Pot Wonder.” I completely agree with her about how versatile and wonderful this one cooking vehicle is, often making numerous other pans and pots superfluous. This means, yes, it really is a great gift for college kids, young grads, house warming, engagement gifts and for young cooks just learning to prepare meals, not just muffins and cookies. Because of the scale of my SOLID enamel covered caste iron pot, it IS heavy and therefore just a bit cumbersome to weld in the sink when cleaning, but it’s really not terrible. Just, it’s a sizeable and heavy pot. This chapter is very helpful for new and just-starting out cooks in her cover of the basics of your pantry and including citing such really basic knowledge items like oven mitts and making a grocery shopping list. More experienced cooks could skip most of what’s in this chapter.There’s absolutely no nutritional information cited with the recipes, and they are, for the most part, high-carb, high-starch items, so I really wanted to know so I could make some adjustments. Additionally, she included a recipe devoting a whole page to making popcorn in a Dutch Oven. I guess she has a gas stove. Doing so on Electric would be more time consuming to heat cast iron and the oil just right so it doesn’t smoke. This is something she could simply have alluded to in an introduction to the snacks recipes section and devoted the page to an actual recipe. Unless you’re under 10 years old, making stove top pop corn is pretty easy to do. And, with the very few photos in this cookbook, whoever picked the illustrating images had the gall to illustrate the popcorn and not a real recipe for that chapter.In addition to no nutritional information and very few photo images, the recipes are mostly high-carb and high starch. Plus, they didn’t even include variations or more complex carb alternatives in the recipes like using a complex carb pasta or spiralized zucchini instead. Not sure those would work for everything. Just I wish they’d said something about either/both of those periodically.The chapter devoted to breakfast was very carb focused, which is a bit traditional with breakfasts. I wish she’d devoted some coverage to a few more egg/protein based breakfast casserole dishes. Just as she emphasizes in her introduction Ode to the Dutch Oven coverage, one of the beauty attributes of a Dutch Oven is you can use it both stove-top AND in the oven. It was when I was ready her recipe for stove top based home made granola that I realized there was no nutrition information. Some other cookbooks where the ingredients were so simple and straight forward, I could still approximate, and it didn’t bother me like it does here. Without knowing the sugar count and everything else, I have no basis to make this safely for my family nor the baseline from which to tweak it.I did appreciate a recipe for making a Rotisserie Style chicken in the Dutch oven as well, a few more variations I would have thought would have been easy to mention and aren’t included, as her having a Vegetarian Dishes chapter and citing to use fresh not frozen in the Veggie Medley recipe on page 32. The Crab Cakes recipe looks great. I haven’t had the chance to make it yet because real crab meat, not the faux stuff which never tastes right to me, isn’t readily available where I am. The cassoulet looks great as does the Split Pea soup. The later isn’t my thing, but my fiancé and BIL both adore it, so I may make them a batch to stock the fridge and freezer with some quick reheat meals.The recipes are still good, and this could be useful for a new cook or grad student living on a budget leaning on cheap speggie noodles (not the fresh gnocci recipe so much for them), bread, and potatoes. It’s a little bit of an obstacle to aim to give this to a young person or new cook, because someone is learning the basics she covers, they should also start to familiarize themselves with the nutritious information of what’s being made at the same time.If you’re giving a Dutch Oven to someone starting out their home, this would make a good accompanying present to build it out to a helpful Starter Home gift.I hope you found my review helpful for you in selecting this book for yourself or as a gift to a new cook. But that is the beauty of the recipes, you can customize them to fit your tastes.Another recipe that is very tasty (but not healthy in any way) is the homemade peach cobbler. Cobblers do very well in dutch oven cooking. Roasts are very good as well, covered with onions, vegetables and stock.The recipes are very easy to follow and they turn out tasting so good! The Chicken Tortellini Soup is very good. It is definitely worth your while to try this book.I did receive a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my unbiased review. Get in my belly! I'm a sucker for easy recipes and I was sold on this cookbook before I ever tried a recipe. 5 ingredients or less? Sign me up! I also have a dutch oven that I have RARELY used, so I was excited to dust it off and try it out again. There are oven 100 recipes in this bad boy and I've already tried out 5. Granted I can't use like half (I'm vegetarian), but the ones I could use were MONEY! They even have a whole vegetarian section (some of which were even vegan)! Besides using the vegetarian section I was able to pull recipes from the breakfast & brunch, snacks, & sides, breads & desserts, and staples & sauces. Options man! Some great recipes include: buttery mashed potatoes with chive, creamy spinach-Parmesan dip, veggie fried rice, savory fried cabbage and noodles, peach cobbler, and cornbread! All in a dutch oven! My only two "complaints" are: lack of pictures and not all recipes are truly 5 ingredients are less. The author doesn't includes seasoning and oils, so some recipes are closer to 10 ingredients. That wouldn't stop me from purchasing this book though! I loved it!

This book is good, but not great. It has the potential to be great, but needs a little more depth. For example, the book has a section on employing family. It even positions this as one of the most important and advantageous strategies. I think this section is about 5 pages and doesn't talk at all about the spouse, only kids. There is sooooo much more to talk about that isn't covered. Sandy Botkin's book is a lot more mature when it comes to tax strategies.This book is strong in general legal guidance which is important. Thus, if you want to do this right, you're going to have to read 3 books: This one, Botkin's book, and Nolo's books about small business taxes (example: Deduct It).Overall, this is a good book and should be required reading. Its a little shallow in places, but still important.

Awesome book for every entrepreneur at least, even more if you are not familiar with USA legislation, will walk you through several scenarios and could potentially save you thousands of dollars just by doing things the right way, plus saving you a lot of trouble, I also got a 1 hour consultation with the author, which was very helpful as well. 100% recommended

The book teaches you a lot about running your own business without leaving it in the hands of an accountant or attorney. Of course you need those two experts and more but there are things in this book and other books from Mark that not even my accountant told me about. Its definitely an eye opener for new business owners but especially for seasoned owners like myself.

I used to feel fearful and intimidated by this type of information, until I came across Mark Kohler. He explains tax and legal strategies in a way that is not only instructive, but also entertaining. I mean, isn't this stuff supposed to be boring? The fact is, taxes are one of the largest expenses we will ever have, and asset protection is becoming more and more critical in today's legal environment. Thank you, Mark Kohler for showing me that it's not only how much you make, but how much you keep. I not only highly recommend this book, but I also b ought 20 copies because I believe everyone MUST read it.

I saw Mark speak twice to two different San Diego investment clubs in the past 8 months or so. The first time was so good I went out of my way to see him a second time at a club that I normally don't attend. He somehow manages to make talking about accounting and tax issues fun and funny, probably because he is comfortable in his own skin, cracks a lot of jokes, and embraces his own inner dorkiness if you will. :) I read his first two books and gleaned quite a bit from them, when I saw that this third books was available, I bought the kindle version the first day and read the brunt of it over a weekend.I think this is his best book to date. He has the ability to take what can be complex subjects and boil them down to the nuts & bolts to get you started. I think many people who get into real estate or start a small business spend so much time thinking about their product, they neglect to look at the tax and legal consequences of various strategies or of, worse, not really having a strategy. In today's litigious environment, it would be insane to do business without the proper protections in place, and Mark does a very good job of explaining the pros and cons of various legal entities and which entities are best suited to which types of businesses.There is a saying by one of the original real estate speakers that if you think education is expensive, just try ignorance. In this case, the $9.99 kindle version price is absurdly cheap for the education he imparts, many of the tips in the book could save you thousands of dollars or even avoid you getting ruined in a lawsuit.I highly recommend this book, especially for those getting started in their own business/real estate who haven't established any asset protection plan. Great stuff!

This "quick review" is an obvious ploy to make money with as little effort as possible. The formulas are poorly formatted with no illustration; for example, "Combinations:nCk = n!/((n-k)k!)!" Or how about this one, "Central Angle = 2(Inscribed Angle)" with no picture or further explanation.I wrote my own quick study guide similar to commercial products from companies like Bar Charts Inc. (quickstudy.com) and laminated it. The combinations equation above should have been written, nCk = n!/(k!(n-k)!) and specified without regard to order. My version is in equation format without the divisor outside parentheses.For the central and inscribed angle, I drew a picture defining the angles. One picture is worth a thousand words.So what, the author never heard of MS Word, Equation or Shapes?This minimum effort publication is at best an indication of some of the topics you should review somewhere else to prepare for the GRE. At worst, it's a confusing, incomplete compilation of formulas you'll have to research elsewhere.That's right, it's not even complete. What about probability? What about Triangle (30,60,90): 3,4,5 in addition to 1,sqrt(3),2? What about weighted averages? How about the ratio of similitude and ratio of areas? What about polynomial multiplication ... direct and inverse proportion ... finding factors ... translating functions ... the list goes on. In fact, I can't help but wonder if the author has ever taken the GRE.The idea behind quick study math guides is to save time researching ideas and formulas. This publication (all 9 pages of it, about half is white space) misses the mark by a long shot. By the way, I put everything I needed for GRE math topics on two sides of a letter sized sheet of paper!I had hoped to pick up some ideas I might have missed when I put together my study guide; nope, not one good idea from this shoddy effort. I can honestly say, I wasted my money.
