I was unable to read this book, because of the lack of contrast with background and print.
I’m generally an picky eater and therefore wary of cookbooks, but something about this book got my attention. I got it today and immediately decided I was going to make the mushroom and beef stew with ale. It’s currently simmering, and making my house smell lovely. I can’t wait to try the other recipes.
Wow after reading this cookbook I am please with its simplicity. Each recipe is marked with prep time and cook time along with labels for gluten free, vegetarian, etc. No calorie counts but she thought about everything else. Well laid out. If you don't want to go with store bought marinara or chicken stock, the back chapter has full recipes. I love that! I want to make just about all the recipes in this book! Can't wait to try a few. I've had my Dutch oven in storage after my move so I am bringing it from the basement to the kitchen tonight!
Lisa has been running her food blog for over 10 years and her focus on just recipes for a Dutch Oven in this terrific cookbook shows in the range and interest of the 101 easy home style cooking recipes. The recipes can take as long as 45 minutes to make, but as she reflects on her mother’s cooking style they are “hands-off†meaning whoever cooks dinner tonight can spend time with family and not hovering over the stove top stirring.Her introduction is short. She starts off Chapter 1 with an ode to the Dutch Oven as “The One-Pot Wonder.†I completely agree with her about how versatile and wonderful this one cooking vehicle is, often making numerous other pans and pots superfluous. This means, yes, it really is a great gift for college kids, young grads, house warming, engagement gifts and for young cooks just learning to prepare meals, not just muffins and cookies. Because of the scale of my SOLID enamel covered caste iron pot, it IS heavy and therefore just a bit cumbersome to weld in the sink when cleaning, but it’s really not terrible. Just, it’s a sizeable and heavy pot. This chapter is very helpful for new and just-starting out cooks in her cover of the basics of your pantry and including citing such really basic knowledge items like oven mitts and making a grocery shopping list. More experienced cooks could skip most of what’s in this chapter.There’s absolutely no nutritional information cited with the recipes, and they are, for the most part, high-carb, high-starch items, so I really wanted to know so I could make some adjustments. Additionally, she included a recipe devoting a whole page to making popcorn in a Dutch Oven. I guess she has a gas stove. Doing so on Electric would be more time consuming to heat cast iron and the oil just right so it doesn’t smoke. This is something she could simply have alluded to in an introduction to the snacks recipes section and devoted the page to an actual recipe. Unless you’re under 10 years old, making stove top pop corn is pretty easy to do. And, with the very few photos in this cookbook, whoever picked the illustrating images had the gall to illustrate the popcorn and not a real recipe for that chapter.In addition to no nutritional information and very few photo images, the recipes are mostly high-carb and high starch. Plus, they didn’t even include variations or more complex carb alternatives in the recipes like using a complex carb pasta or spiralized zucchini instead. Not sure those would work for everything. Just I wish they’d said something about either/both of those periodically.The chapter devoted to breakfast was very carb focused, which is a bit traditional with breakfasts. I wish she’d devoted some coverage to a few more egg/protein based breakfast casserole dishes. Just as she emphasizes in her introduction Ode to the Dutch Oven coverage, one of the beauty attributes of a Dutch Oven is you can use it both stove-top AND in the oven. It was when I was ready her recipe for stove top based home made granola that I realized there was no nutrition information. Some other cookbooks where the ingredients were so simple and straight forward, I could still approximate, and it didn’t bother me like it does here. Without knowing the sugar count and everything else, I have no basis to make this safely for my family nor the baseline from which to tweak it.I did appreciate a recipe for making a Rotisserie Style chicken in the Dutch oven as well, a few more variations I would have thought would have been easy to mention and aren’t included, as her having a Vegetarian Dishes chapter and citing to use fresh not frozen in the Veggie Medley recipe on page 32. The Crab Cakes recipe looks great. I haven’t had the chance to make it yet because real crab meat, not the faux stuff which never tastes right to me, isn’t readily available where I am. The cassoulet looks great as does the Split Pea soup. The later isn’t my thing, but my fiancé and BIL both adore it, so I may make them a batch to stock the fridge and freezer with some quick reheat meals.The recipes are still good, and this could be useful for a new cook or grad student living on a budget leaning on cheap speggie noodles (not the fresh gnocci recipe so much for them), bread, and potatoes. It’s a little bit of an obstacle to aim to give this to a young person or new cook, because someone is learning the basics she covers, they should also start to familiarize themselves with the nutritious information of what’s being made at the same time.If you’re giving a Dutch Oven to someone starting out their home, this would make a good accompanying present to build it out to a helpful Starter Home gift.I hope you found my review helpful for you in selecting this book for yourself or as a gift to a new cook. First of all, I have to say, I am a Dutch Oven lover! When I have cooked with dutch ovens over coals, there is nothing like the flavor of the food that is cooked this way. Now, move over hot coals, welcome to the beauty of cast iron cookware in the kitchen.There is some good beginning information such as Why Dutch Oven cooking is so great, care and maintenance, how to choose the right equipment and lots of good information to help you with learning this style of cooking.There is the 5- tool kitchen, the 5-ingredient pantry, staples and shopping lists, and then the meat of the book - The Recipes.The book is divided into 10 different chapters:Dutch Oven BasicsBreakfast & BrunchSnacks, Apps & SlidesMains: BeefMains: Chicken & TurkeyMains: Pork & LambMains: Fish & ShellfishMains: VegetarianBreads & DessertsStaples & SaucesThe author has also included the list of the Dirty Dozen & Clean Fifteen foods, Measurement Conversions, and Recipe Index.Some of the recipes just are mouth-watering such as teh Ham, Swiss, Spinach and Mushroom Frittata. One of my favorites is the Roasted Veggie Medley with Brown Butter and Garlic. The recipe only calls ofr Brussels sprouts, broccoli and carrots, but I love this with sweet potatoes, cauliflower, and asparagus. But that is the beauty of the recipes, you can customize them to fit your tastes.Another recipe that is very tasty (but not healthy in any way) is the homemade peach cobbler. Cobblers do very well in dutch oven cooking. Roasts are very good as well, covered with onions, vegetables and stock.The recipes are very easy to follow and they turn out tasting so good! The Chicken Tortellini Soup is very good. It is definitely worth your while to try this book.I did receive a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my unbiased review. I would highly recommend this cookbook.
Get in my belly! I'm a sucker for easy recipes and I was sold on this cookbook before I ever tried a recipe. 5 ingredients or less? Sign me up! I also have a dutch oven that I have RARELY used, so I was excited to dust it off and try it out again. There are oven 100 recipes in this bad boy and I've already tried out 5. Granted I can't use like half (I'm vegetarian), but the ones I could use were MONEY! They even have a whole vegetarian section (some of which were even vegan)! Besides using the vegetarian section I was able to pull recipes from the breakfast & brunch, snacks, & sides, breads & desserts, and staples & sauces. Options man! Some great recipes include: buttery mashed potatoes with chive, creamy spinach-Parmesan dip, veggie fried rice, savory fried cabbage and noodles, peach cobbler, and cornbread! All in a dutch oven! My only two "complaints" are: lack of pictures and not all recipes are truly 5 ingredients are less. The author doesn't includes seasoning and oils, so some recipes are closer to 10 ingredients. That wouldn't stop me from purchasing this book though! I loved it!
