I have recently purchased this book, at another outlet by chance, and am highly pleased with its content. If you want to throw a party with great drinks with even greater names, fabulous finger foods - or have a small dinner with appetizing results, invest in this book. I was so excited, since my life now revolves around hosting, to find a book that is immaculately put together and will not hurt the bank. The only thing I can not believe is that I hadn't found this book sooner. Why is it hiding on amazon? This book should be advertized more.Suggestion: Use this book to organize and throw a fabulous party, and at said party, hand out a menu with a list of the names of these drinks. The guests will not know what to do with themselves and I promise it will garner an oustanding response from the revelers. You may never get to go to sleep ;)Enjoy.

With fifteen years of beverage catering all over the world under my belt, I can assure anybody considering this book: buy it! Planning parties always involves lots of stressful details, calculations, planning, and organization that make the process a headache rather than a joy. This book does the opposite, thankfully. Miss Charming helps anybody from a pro to a home enthusiast handle everything without forgetting about the fun and creativity that every cocktail party should have. It's a fun, easy read packed with useful information including resources, recipes, and helpful hints. The recipes are great and well-written, unlike most cocktail recipe books which confuse even the most seasoned bartender with vague procedures and obscure ingredients and feature lots of unpleasant recipes that nobody drinks these days. Not this one: Cheryl explains in plain english every delicious recipe so your cocktails come out perfect. The hints and tips she provides are worth the price of the book alone. Brief summary, no spoilers.I know it may be odd to talk about “spoilers” when this is the story of a mythological character, but there are reasons for that and I will explain in the review.This book is told from the point of view of Circe, daughter of the sun Titan Helios. Her mother was Perse, a sea nymph who was the granddaughter of the Titan Oceanos.We mainly know of Circe from the Odyssey and her interactions with Odysseus. She was known as a sorceress who lived on an island and turned men into pigs. We know from the Odyssey that Circe was often seen working at a huge loom surrounded by dangerous animals such as wolves and lions, yet they were all under her control. We also know from the Odyssey that Odysseus - by virtue of his wiles - not only avoids Circe’s sorcery but beds her as well. When he leaves she gives him advice on how to survive the perils on his seaward journey home to his homeland of Ithaca, such as Scylla and Charybdis, so he can reunite with his beloved wife Penelope and son Telemachus.So why did I like this book so much? Well, stand back, because I’m about to gush.I am a big fan of Greek mythology, and I was a big fan of this author’s previous book, The Song of Achilles. Yet this one was even better.Circe was not a major figure in the Odyssey; in fact when I first opened the book I realized I got her mixed up with Calypso. But I won’t make that mistake anymore. This minor character has now become my favorite character of all thanks to this author’s brilliant work.Because this book is told from Circe’s point of view, we get to intimately know her - not just her history and story but her thoughts as well. The reason this is so important is because we come to empathize with Circe. We tend to think of the Greek Gods as so fickle and often cruel - and indeed they are often depicted that way - yet with Circe, we meet a goddess who is so human and so very, very likable.The reason I made the “no spoilers” comment at the start, is because Circe’s experiences include her meeting and interacting with various other figures from Greek myth, and it’s a big part of the enjoyment of this novel to experience it the way the author intended, without knowing what is going to happen next.I took a few days to read this book but that was not because it was a slow read. Just the opposite; I was so happy while reading it that I would stop myself after each chapter just to pace myself so it wouldn’t end too soon.I highly (obviously) recommend this to any fans of Greek mythology and for sure to anyone who enjoyed The Song of Achilles. But you don’t have to know much about the Odyssey or Greek mythology to love this book. Although this novel is about a god, it’s really a story about what it means to be human.

{My Thoughts}What Worked For MeA Classic Tale Reimagined – Taking a classic story and reinventing it with a modern twist is nothing new. We see it time after time, but the usual reimagining places the characters and plot in a contemporary setting as the story plays out. With Circe, Madeline Miller kept the characters and the setting, and instead shifted the focus, placing it solely on Circe. Those of you with a background in mythology will see many, many elements from classic Greek mythology (especially The Odyssey) popping up in this book. However, if you’ve lived under a rock and never even knew there was such a thing as mythology it won’t matter. Miller gives you everything you need to know and she does it seamlessly.A Woman with Attitude – If you’re anything like me, you will come to adore Circe, the book and the woman. Born into one of the two most powerful families of gods, Circe adored her father, Helios, but never quite measured up. Where her siblings were gorgeous and powerful from an early age, Circe was plain and seemingly powerless. Tormented by her own family, Circe grew more and more fascinated with mortals. Falling in love with one, brought out her previously unknown powers of witchcraft.“I was too wild to feel shame. It was true. I would not just uproot the world, but tear it, burn it, do any evil I could to keep Glaucos by my side. But what stayed most in my mind was the look on my grandmother’s face when I’d said that word, pharmaka. It was not a look I know well among the gods.”This girl had gumption and she used her new power to punish her rival, creating a monster all came to feared. But, she paid a price for going too far. Circe was banished to the small island of Aiaia for eternity. This is where the book Circe really took off for me. On the island, I found it impossible not to admire and root for this woman who year after year, century after century, faced her fears, honed her powers, and learned to stand up for herself.“She was gone. The most important thing I learned from this beautiful book, illustrated by the author, is that Native American religion is active, not passive. Prayer includes making something, doing something, going somewhere, not just standing & singing, sitting and listening to sermons, just observing rituals, trodden along a well worn path. It makes everything fresh, present, now. Thomas Mails has made accessible to anyone what was passed down one on one for millennia by individuals in separate tribes. This is a basket of gifts, a bundle of gifts of Spirit. Enjoy! Gotta do it to "get it" not just read about it. These practices could be used for children in schools, rehab for those torn down by our abrasive society, elders with diminishing horizons, really an unlimited demographic.I hope some Natives, worn down by reservation life, can rekindle the fire in their hearts, light in their eyes, by dipping into this book.Every time I do the practices Mails writes about here, I'm refreshed, have a new and deeper awareness of life, am more grateful.

I found help in this book. I think it fulfills the intended purpose, for those of us who were not raised within the culture to find peace within ourselves using the terminology of the Native American to break us out of our linear thinking. I don't believe the author meant for the book to be a guide to "becoming an Indian" or anything like that. This was the first step on my road. It has also helped me to understand some of the things my Grandfather said to me. I feel very strongly that this book can help those who may be searching for a spiritual way to connect with the Universe, so much so I am here today buying one for a friend.

This book is for people who are interested in different tribes and their rituals on becoming peaceful inside and how they coped through their stress; and stress they had as white eyes came and took over their land. It first goes into 4 different tribes and how they worked and lived, then into some of their ceremonies. Finally at the end how you can apply these ceremonies to yourself in modern day ways. They show good examples on how to make certain ceremony items that are needed and give many suggestions on how to work a ceremony for these days.

As one who is not Native, but has spent decades trying to assimilate the Native culture and spirituality, I found that this book offered some interesting perspectives on how to incorporate Native spiritual concepts into daily living.

I detest writing negative reviews, but when the author says the following on page 230. My hands are tied."I do not in any instance give you enough guidance to duplicate any of the rituals. The native Americans would be rightfuly displeased if I did, amd I would be breaking confidences."If Mr. Mails did not have permission to release accurate information he should not have written the book!Now to my minor nitpicks about the book.I was personaly offended at the title of chapter 4 "Marauding Apache".On page 189 Mr. Mails talks of women as well as men being pierced in the sundance. Both sexes may participate in the sundance but only the men are pierced.On page 211, 258, and 259 the author discusses the Sioux medicine wheel, and he lists different colors associated with the directions.Page 211& 259: West-Black, North-Red, East-Yellow, South-White.Page 258: West-Black, North-White, East-Red, and South Yellow.Page 258 has the correct color associations according to Nick Black Elk's vision, and these same colors are shown on the cover of "Native Wisdom" Ed McGaa.I have no idea why the author would have the colors right on page 258 and wrong again on the very next page.If you have questions or comments E-Mail me. These things are very sacred to us as native anericans. That should have never been in this book. He says parts of the book were good but after seeing what he saw and read he was disappointed.

This book is a nice, short, and informative book about the very early years of US women’s rowing at the highest levels. It tells the story of the first US women’s team to race an eight-person sweeped boat in the world championships in England in 1975. Partly due to their success in that venue, from that point on US women were regular participants in international rowing events.Even into the early 1970s rowing was a male-dominated sport. Women were not welcome: facilities, funding, coaching, etc were not available to them. Some very determined women gradually pried the door open, including one of the crew Gail Pearson, an older, MIT professor.The author sketches the backgrounds of several of the crew members – virtually all of them young college girls, the steps that were taken to form a US women’s team, the all-important selection of Harvard men’s coach Harry Parker as the women’s coach, and the stressful manner in which the team was selected. It is made quite clear that rowing is an extremely challenging sport: extraordinary fitness is required, as well as an ability to deal with the pain from intense efforts and such problems as blisters. Though partly due to Parker’s taciturn personality, the training was quite austere: an endless cycle of row, eat, sleep with time for few words.The European teams had years of experience on the Americans with substantial funding, especially the Russians and the East Germans. The upstart Americans placed second in the event barely losing to the East Germans, thus completing one of the more remarkable stories in American sports history.Written in 2000, the author briefly describes what the women of the boat have been doing since 1975. Many of them remained quite active in rowing circles. What the author could not have known is that Harry Parker continued to coach at Harvard until his death in 2013, having a distinguished career of 50 years, not the least of which was his superb job of coaching the 1975 US women. As good as the book most certainly is, it is a bit abbreviated in places.

I am the proud parent of a stroke rower. This story, of very different women, from widely geographic and psychological backgrounds, all coming together to do something no one had done before, is mesmorizing and grabs at every heartstring I have. The forward is equally compelling. I have met one of the Yale rowers in this story, and believe me, if she did half the stuff she is credited doing, I have even more admiration for her. This book taught me a bit about rowing, some equipment nuances, and training techniques. It gave me several nights of wonderful pleasure, some laughs, some tears. Now that this sport, like most others, is so scientific, so over studied (I guess we have the east germans to thank for that), it largely selects the athletes by performance. But the 'Red Rose Crew' had that intangible: spirit and guts. That doesn't always show up on ERG scores, or height charts. I am so glad I read this, and was able to share it with my daughter. The writing is clear, concise, and both narrative and dialogue where appropriate. Great work.

Historically this is an important book. The rowers are fleshed out, though unequally. Carrie Graves gets the lioness' share of coverage, while several others are merely silhouettes, by comparison. There is back story information that would probably have been lost had Mr. Boyne not collected his information and published it. The early years of women's rowing and racing were rough. Early hours, lack of locker rooms, equipment designed for men, used and passed down. The general hostility towards women in a pre-Title IX, man's world is well-observed. The intra-squad rivalries might have been explained. The racing descriptions, especially at the nationals in Princeton, and in England seemed thin, with the book rushing to a hasty close. There is some misinformation, but I did not note it when I read the book. All things considered, it is a great read.

Very well written book that I couldn’t put down. For anyone looking to be inspired by those who give everything they’ve got to achieve what they love the most. And for anyone who loves rowing.

Wonderful book! Very inspiring and extremely well written. Truly makes me regret I didn't know about rowing until so late in life. But, better late than never as I prepare to begin rowing the new Annapolis wherry my husband built for me.

Amazon recommended this book to me, based on a previous purchase. I read a review and ordered it. It was delivered in a timely manner and I dove in. The book is great. The story of these women rowers in 1975 is inspiring and it is well told. As a rower, I appreciate what they went through, the relationship with their coach and with each other, and the effort they put in. But it is a good and inspiring story for anyone to read. I highly recommend it.

Heidi M. Neck, PhD, is a Babson College Professor and the Jeffry A. Timmons Professor of Entrepreneurial Studies. She has taught entrepreneurship at the undergraduate, MBA and executive levels. Neck is the President of the United States Association of Small Business & Entrepreneurship (USASBE), an academic organization dedicated to the advancement of entrepreneurship education. She is Faculty Director of The Babson Collaborative, a global institutional membership organization for colleges and universities seeking to increase their capability and capacity in entrepreneurship education. Additionally, Neck is Faculty Director of Babson’s Symposia for Entrepreneurship Educators (SEE)― programs designed to further develop faculty from around the world in the of art and craft of teaching entrepreneurship and building entrepreneurship programs. Through her leadership she has directly trained over 2,000 educators around the world. An award-winning teacher, Neck has been recognized for teaching excellence at Babson for undergraduate, graduate, and executive education. She has also been recognized by international organizations, the Academy of Management and USASBE, for excellence in pedagogy and course design. Most recently in 2016 The Schulze Foundation awarded her “Entrepreneurship Educator of the Year” for pushing the frontier of entrepreneurship education in higher education.Her research interests include entrepreneurship education, entrepreneurship inside organizations, and creative thinking. Neck is the lead author of Teaching Entrepreneurship: A Practice-Based Approach (Elgar Publishing)―a book written to help educators teach entrepreneurship in more experiential and engaging ways. Additionally, she has published 40+ book chapters, research monographs, and refereed articles in such journals as Journal of Small Business Management, Entrepreneurship Theory & Practice, and International Journal of Entrepreneurship Education. I purchased the physical textbook as a student for a college course. While there is very valuable information from this book, I have to say this is the laziest textbook I have purchased. While there are diagrams and tables that have pictures and text explaining various aspects throughout the chapters, there are also the occasional "video" and "audio" diagrams that DO ABSOLUTELY NOTHING if you own the physical copy of the textbook. Not even a link. Furthermore, I feel like watching videos takes away value from reading this textbook.

I used it for my course and all of our classmates complained about the book.the author of the book makes up the vocabs that are only used in this book and weak explanations.If you have to buy for your course, just try to make copies from the school library. The professor will not use the book very much.

Great book, easy read, bought it on Kindle though.

Each chapter was entertaining. It made assimilation easier especially as a first timer studying entrepreneurship as a practice. Knowledge is power.

This is a really great textbook that gets students out of the classroom and into practicing entrepreneurship. I have not been using a textbook for several years (until this fall) because I could not find one that I thought provided the right balance of information, theory, and practice. I highly recommend it!
