This book is a nice, short, and informative book about the very early years of US women’s rowing at the highest levels. It tells the story of the first US women’s team to race an eight-person sweeped boat in the world championships in England in 1975. Partly due to their success in that venue, from that point on US women were regular participants in international rowing events.Even into the early 1970s rowing was a male-dominated sport. Women were not welcome: facilities, funding, coaching, etc were not available to them. Some very determined women gradually pried the door open, including one of the crew Gail Pearson, an older, MIT professor.The author sketches the backgrounds of several of the crew members – virtually all of them young college girls, the steps that were taken to form a US women’s team, the all-important selection of Harvard men’s coach Harry Parker as the women’s coach, and the stressful manner in which the team was selected. It is made quite clear that rowing is an extremely challenging sport: extraordinary fitness is required, as well as an ability to deal with the pain from intense efforts and such problems as blisters. Though partly due to Parker’s taciturn personality, the training was quite austere: an endless cycle of row, eat, sleep with time for few words.The European teams had years of experience on the Americans with substantial funding, especially the Russians and the East Germans. The upstart Americans placed second in the event barely losing to the East Germans, thus completing one of the more remarkable stories in American sports history.Written in 2000, the author briefly describes what the women of the boat have been doing since 1975. Many of them remained quite active in rowing circles. What the author could not have known is that Harry Parker continued to coach at Harvard until his death in 2013, having a distinguished career of 50 years, not the least of which was his superb job of coaching the 1975 US women. As good as the book most certainly is, it is a bit abbreviated in places.

I am the proud parent of a stroke rower. This story, of very different women, from widely geographic and psychological backgrounds, all coming together to do something no one had done before, is mesmorizing and grabs at every heartstring I have. The forward is equally compelling. I have met one of the Yale rowers in this story, and believe me, if she did half the stuff she is credited doing, I have even more admiration for her. This book taught me a bit about rowing, some equipment nuances, and training techniques. It gave me several nights of wonderful pleasure, some laughs, some tears. Now that this sport, like most others, is so scientific, so over studied (I guess we have the east germans to thank for that), it largely selects the athletes by performance. But the 'Red Rose Crew' had that intangible: spirit and guts. That doesn't always show up on ERG scores, or height charts. I am so glad I read this, and was able to share it with my daughter. The writing is clear, concise, and both narrative and dialogue where appropriate. Great work.

Historically this is an important book. The rowers are fleshed out, though unequally. Carrie Graves gets the lioness' share of coverage, while several others are merely silhouettes, by comparison. There is back story information that would probably have been lost had Mr. Boyne not collected his information and published it. The early years of women's rowing and racing were rough. Early hours, lack of locker rooms, equipment designed for men, used and passed down. The general hostility towards women in a pre-Title IX, man's world is well-observed. The intra-squad rivalries might have been explained. The racing descriptions, especially at the nationals in Princeton, and in England seemed thin, with the book rushing to a hasty close. There is some misinformation, but I did not note it when I read the book. All things considered, it is a great read.

Very well written book that I couldn’t put down. For anyone looking to be inspired by those who give everything they’ve got to achieve what they love the most. And for anyone who loves rowing.

Wonderful book! Very inspiring and extremely well written. Truly makes me regret I didn't know about rowing until so late in life. But, better late than never as I prepare to begin rowing the new Annapolis wherry my husband built for me.

Amazon recommended this book to me, based on a previous purchase. I read a review and ordered it. It was delivered in a timely manner and I dove in. The book is great. The story of these women rowers in 1975 is inspiring and it is well told. As a rower, I appreciate what they went through, the relationship with their coach and with each other, and the effort they put in. But it is a good and inspiring story for anyone to read. I highly recommend it.

Heidi M. Neck, PhD, is a Babson College Professor and the Jeffry A. Timmons Professor of Entrepreneurial Studies. She has taught entrepreneurship at the undergraduate, MBA and executive levels. Neck is the President of the United States Association of Small Business & Entrepreneurship (USASBE), an academic organization dedicated to the advancement of entrepreneurship education. She is Faculty Director of The Babson Collaborative, a global institutional membership organization for colleges and universities seeking to increase their capability and capacity in entrepreneurship education. Additionally, Neck is Faculty Director of Babson’s Symposia for Entrepreneurship Educators (SEE)― programs designed to further develop faculty from around the world in the of art and craft of teaching entrepreneurship and building entrepreneurship programs. Through her leadership she has directly trained over 2,000 educators around the world. An award-winning teacher, Neck has been recognized for teaching excellence at Babson for undergraduate, graduate, and executive education. She has also been recognized by international organizations, the Academy of Management and USASBE, for excellence in pedagogy and course design. Most recently in 2016 The Schulze Foundation awarded her “Entrepreneurship Educator of the Year” for pushing the frontier of entrepreneurship education in higher education.Her research interests include entrepreneurship education, entrepreneurship inside organizations, and creative thinking. Neck is the lead author of Teaching Entrepreneurship: A Practice-Based Approach (Elgar Publishing)―a book written to help educators teach entrepreneurship in more experiential and engaging ways. I purchased the physical textbook as a student for a college course. While there is very valuable information from this book, I have to say this is the laziest textbook I have purchased. While there are diagrams and tables that have pictures and text explaining various aspects throughout the chapters, there are also the occasional "video" and "audio" diagrams that DO ABSOLUTELY NOTHING if you own the physical copy of the textbook. Not even a link. Furthermore, I feel like watching videos takes away value from reading this textbook.

I used it for my course and all of our classmates complained about the book.the author of the book makes up the vocabs that are only used in this book and weak explanations.If you have to buy for your course, just try to make copies from the school library. The professor will not use the book very much.

Great book, easy read, bought it on Kindle though.

Each chapter was entertaining. It made assimilation easier especially as a first timer studying entrepreneurship as a practice. Knowledge is power.

The author is a journalist and travel writer who was given the opportunity to move to Switzerland and learn about the country and its people. His book covers everything from chocolate and cheese, to politics, history, and ettiquette. It isn't a guide for living in Switzerland only - it is for anyone who is interested in traveling to Switzerland or just learning about the country. He gives a light, whimsical telling that I think anyone would enjoy.I learned quite a bit about the country I still haven't picked up even living here. I knew a lot of it, but the ins and outs of the government, or some of the back history of the country was new to me. I have loved living in Switzerland, and it is always great to read a book from an expats point of view. I agreed with much of what he said - that the Swiss really do run on time 99% of the time, they are formal and quiet, but they are also kind.I encourage you to read this one. I am, of course, bias becuase I do love Switzerland and have loved living here. You really will learn a lot about one of the richest countries in the world.

As one for whom Switzerland is part of my heart of hearts, I can't begin to express how much I enjoyed this book. I am Swiss, but have been raised and spent most of my life in the USA. This book truly gave me much information that I did not know about Switzerland. I also found myself frequently chuckling to myself, when descriptions of Swiss mannerisms and culture came oh so close to home in accuracy. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about Switzerland, Swiss or no. Thank you for a very enjoyable read.

We were in Switzerland while reading the book on our iPads. Made the trip more interesting and valuable in many ways. Have been to the country many times before, even lived there as a child, but almost everything in the book was either new information or a touching reminder of past experiences and perceptions. The writer's unique style makes it easy to keep going. Lots of laughs!I don't believe another book like this exists. Even if you don't have a trip to Switzerland planned, read the book anyway, just in case. And to impress your friends.Lots of history and "insider" info here, but so much contemporary lore that after reading this book Switzerland seem like the best place in the world. Go often, stay long.

Educational and hilarious compilation of Switzerland's many wonderful quirks, told with love by an expat. I bought the book after returning from a vacation Switzerland, which piqued my curiosity about everything Swiss. This is a great read for anyone who plans to go or has been to Switzerland. If you haven't yet had the pleasure of visiting Switzerland, the excellent hand-drawn maps throughout the book give great context for your trip. If you have been to Switzerland, this book will make you want to go back and visit all 26 cantons, taking same trips as the author to cheese making facilities, chocolate factories, and so many more iconically Swiss attractions. I loved the writer's wry, witty, and highly descriptive story-telling.

This book taught me many things that I didn't know about Switzerland. Although the country is small, it is extremely important because the Germans in Switzerland are richer than the Germans in Germany, the French in Switzerland are richer than the French in France and Belgium, the Italians in Switzerland are richer than the Italians in Italy; and despite it's small population, it avoided the European wars of the 20th century by persuading nearby larger countries, especially Germany, that invading it would be unprofitable. As Meredith Grey once said, terrorists never attack the Swiss because nobody has a beef with Switzerland.

Most of the time I really enjoyed reading this book. There were a few sections that were a bit trying to finish, and the author's jokes were sometimes a little to "hammy" for my taste (but I did get the occasional chuckle). The opperative word in that last sentence is "few". In general, I found the book pleasurable and easy to read.Swiss Watching covers a variety of different topics, so in that sense the book is good for a rather large audience. This is not simply a guide for living in Switzerland, nor is it a history of the country. It combines elements of both in an artful way that leaves the reader feeling better informed about life in Switzerland. I learned a lot from this book.I would certainly recommend this book to anyone who is planning to move to or at least travel in Switzerland. But, I also feel that someone who merely has an interest in Europe or other cultures could get a lot out of this book.

My tour operator suggested this book before our two-week stay. I really enjoyed it for its insights into Swiss people, their history, worldview and personalities. Excellent writing , informative and humorous. What more could you ask?

It is a well written and entertaining book. Just to relax and learn while you are reading it. Some passages are very hilarious. Over all it is an honest book able to portrait an exceptional nation. I wish the author had focused also in other interesting topics such as education and economy.

The pictures are decent, but a little shaky on the line work. I really expected a bit better. You'd have to use a really fine tipped colored pencil to color the designs in as well as I'd like, without making it look sloppy. I like the artwork well enough, but I don't think they really thought through the designs from a 'coloring book' perspective. Otherwise, a decent effort, but not great.

I really like the content of this book. Somewhere I have a copy of an earlier edition (from the '70s/'80s). I was excited to see that it was available in the Kindle edition.However, they were very LAZY about creating the edition. They included 2 pages face up, would wouldn't be too bad on my 30" computer monitor. However, this kindle version isn't available to download on PCs. That leaves my 5" Android smart phone. 2 pages is just laughable. You can see that something is there, but no details. Supposedly, you can tap & expand the picture, but that's only for one of the book's physical pages. Then there's my 7" Kindle Fire. Even there, the screen size is too small to see the drawings clearly, which is why I bought it.To make matters worse, the dictionary isn't even searchable! Isn't that one reason why we buy electronic books? Since the signs are grouped by topic (a good choice), you have to go to the index to find the word you want, then try to guess which page you might find it on by the Kindle "Location #" (out of 182, when there are 340 pages).To take an example, let's say I want to know the sign for Permit. I got to the index in the back and scroll to find the right word in the index (location 180). Then, I need to go to page 128. There are links to the correct page, but with the size of the words in the index, can I really get the word I want? (Answer: Sometimes yes, other times no.) If the link doesn't work, then I need to use a scroll bar to get to Location 66. (There's no Go To option to type in the location.)All in all, the Kindle version is HORRIBLE!

The Joy of Signing: The New Illustrated Guide for Mastering Sign Language and the Manual Alphabet is an essential guide to learning the basics of sign language. This book was bought for my young daughter as she showed an interest in being able to at least know a few basics if she encountered some one who could not hear. She has used this book countless times and even gave a small demo on the signs used for various animals to a group of her peers. This is a must have when learning and a great reference point when you need it.

i bought this for my youth minister at church. he works with the kids a lot and i thought he might find it useful!!! i have one too and i used it a lot when i was teaching at a montessori school a few years ago. it is a great book. i guess sometime i should update and get a newer one but this one is so easy to use. i had my students learn several songs in sign language they loved it.

middle "ground" learners of sign language. I have taught sign language and deaf culture for over 35 years plus interpreted for the deaf and I have observed that many ppl find this book the easiest introduction to sign. Lest someone jump on this, I don't pretend to do ASL, but rather use PSE and prefer it. I am hard of hearing myself. Love this book. Kinda wish there would come a new edition soon.

I am happy with the content as I am able to find the words and instruction are easy to follow but the image and word are not adjustable and it is hard to read. I am using a Samsung tab3 10'. I would not want to image viewing this on my son's 7' tablet,I am sure it will bend hard to read or recognize information.

The kindle version of this book is small printed unlike all the other kindle books I have. I find it difficult to read and will have to end up buying the hard copy instead.

It was a used book and it was in good condition and I will be able to use it to refresh my signing

This kindle edition is impossible to read. It is all so tiny. I have the book but wanted the kindle edition for easy access. I have other signing books on kindle that are easy to read but not as complete as the Joy of Signing. I would like a refund unless you can correct the copy into something readable.

Well written

Now that we've gotten Nando back, we've got to get Gustave's memory back! Oh my, the 1st 2 teachers of the Magic School have arrived, but really, what can a pig and a bat teach us? Exactly, nothing is as it seems. Everyone has magic and you don't know who is what. As our story opens, we have much to be astonished and anxious about but let's try to get at least one useful lesson in. Alas, it would seem that even this lesson will be delayed because a mouse is not a mouse but a spy, unhappily caught by an owl! What secrets will he tell? Where is Albacus?? We're adding to our teaching base with the arrival of the pig aka Prudence and a bat who is really a vampire named Vladimir but we need some class time. What fantastic things will they be able to teach us? Prudence can force you to change your body and prevent you from casting spells, while Vladimir can make you answer a myriad of questions truthfully. Who else will come to our aid, bring what kinds of magic? It's thrilling and spellbinding and wonderfully fun. Before you know it you're at the end if the book waiting with bated breath for the next installment.Believe me, if you truly want to immerse yourself in magic and magical beings, this series is for you.

Lucia Ashta makes it look so easy, her books just flow with every word in the right place.As the action continue in this fast paced adventure, we see Isa and Nando beginning their lessons in Magic. Many new intriguing and complex characters are introduced, as the reader discovers this new world, and much beloved old characters from the Witching World make their appearance.The Author continues with her strong plot and very interesting storyline, and there are lots of surprises as twists and turns abound.There is also very good detailed explanation to all the characters, scenes and settings and the excitement, adventure and suspense continues to transport the reader on an interesting journey from start to finish. Highly recommended.The book is very well presented with an eye catching cover.Gifted with a copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

Ashta doesn't seem to break a sweat bringing this page turning bombshell into another astounding read with a strong plot that keeps your focus on the storyline. All the action, fast paced, suspense filled, excitement and adventure to keep you on a razors edge. The characters were intriguing, complex and realistic. The scenes were so vividly detailed and descriptive that it gives the illusion you were right there in the middle of ground zero with them. Twists and turns abound with nerve racking, thrilling surprises that will keep you spellbound and anxious for whats next. Following the characters as their world continues in chaos with a whirlwind of mishaps and discoveries. Ashta did an incredible job bringing this read to life flawlessly and without a hitch. Great job Ashta, thanks for sharing this remarkable tale with us.I received an ARC for this story.

Wow this series really is a cracker.It has all the usual qualities that we come to expect of Lucia’s magical fantasy stories but it comes, in my humble opinion, with the bonus of meeting old characters in the Witching World series that you grew to love.It’s certainly an outstanding piece of writing and I for one am looking forward to the rest of the series.Thank you once again Lucia. It makes my day to read another of your creations.

I just finished reading this book and wow! I loved it. Isa and Nando are introduced to two new teachers and they begin to wonder if they can get through one lesson without interruption or feeling like they are completely lost. But through all of that, they are still faced with attacks from the SMS, who are the based guys. Can they make it through one day? Seriously great read.

I recieved an ARC and willingly chose to reviewI liked this third installment, the new characters--especially the Prudence--her dramatics are entertaining, but she's also a formidable character which was nice to see as well. I can't quite figure Brave or Gertrude out, they haven't had much interaction with Isa or Nando for me to like them or not. Most of these last two books have been more about finding new students and teachers to build the school up as well as fortifying their defenses around the school. The plot is still strong and solid and I'm able to fully immerse myself in the book, I'm looking forward to Isa interacting more with the other characters and to find out what she's capable if doing. Can't wait to see what's going to happen next, now that a traitor has been identified.

This installment in the series was as much fun as the others. Isa and Nando are learning to never be surprised by anything, as they meet two of their new teachers. Pretty colorful charterers, to say the least! While there is danger coming from all directions, there is unity and camaraderie and that doesn't alter, despite the crazy circumstances. I can't wait to find out what happens next.
