I am honestly blown away by this journal for $5 I am so surprised by the high quality of this journal. Has a great matte very soft cover, thick bright pages, and very sturdy binding. I bought one for my 6 year old as an invention journal but now I'm going to get another for my 4yr old and 2yr old as I think they will hold up well. If I were to buy this in a store I think it would easily be $10+ so very much worth it.

Carrot Cake Noodles, anyone? This is a fantastic book for anyone looking to switch from refined pasta to low-carb, veggie-first cuisine. (And it's also a great book for gardeners -- these recipes are the answer to the perennial question of "What am I going to do with all this zucchini??")Lots of the recipes have a Southeast Asian flair, like the Purple Carrot Noodles with Thai Coconut Sauce or the Japanese Sweet Potato Noodles with Two Sauces, but you'll also see dishes featuring Mediterranean and Italian flavors. No matter the recipe, though, noodles are the starring ingredient, whether they're made from beets or zucchini. The author has also included recipes for making basic staples like Homemade Ketchup, Coconut Bacon, and nut butters and milks. Yes, all of the recipes are vegan, but the overall tone is friendly and inviting whether you use animal products or not. There's also a chapter on raw entrées, which is a great option for hot summer months. And while dehydrators are welcome, they're not a necessity -- you'll find hacks for using the oven you already have.This is a beautiful book loaded with refreshing recipes, tons of inspiration for farmer's market shoppers, and lots and lots of slurp-able noodles. Nourishing Noodles is one of the best cookbooks I've seen for inspiring people to use veggie noodles in new ways and try new flavor profiles. I bought a spiralizer two years ago and I am always looking for new ways to enjoy veggie noodles. Chris Anca's vegan recipes definitely offer new ways of using spiralized noodles in their raw form.Only two recipes seem to require a dehydrator (including the delicious looking cheesy quinoa balls), and that could easily be adapted to a home oven.The cookbook is split into sections by meal type, including one section devoted to hand rolls. A large majority of the recipes are Asian-influenced, relying on ingredients like coconut milk, tamari, miso, and spring onions. There are also a few Middle Eastern-flavored recipes calling for hummus or tahini and two token zucchini-with-marinara recipes (one raw and one cooked).I found the flavor combinations to be a little odd but good in the two recipes I've tried so far, which were the lemony noodles with tahini cream sauce and the beet noodles with miso and goji berries. Chris' recipes pack a ton of flavor into her veggie noodles and it's easy to omit or cut down on a seasoning or two and still wind up with a great dish (as I did with the garlic and mint in the tahini noodles).Her recipes are written with very concise instructions. In most cases, they basically say: combine all the dressing ingredients in a blender and blend, then pour over your spiralized noodles. The front section has more detail on how to spiralize a particular vegetable or fruit. In some cases, more description would probably be helpful, for instance specifying that you should wait for the quinoa to cool before adding it to your beet salad. Another reason I hesitate to give this cookbook 5 stars is a lot of the recipes call for ingredients I didn't already have in my pantry, like goji berries, ume plum vinegar, fresh mint, and white miso.This cookbook is perfect for healthy summer eating. I liked both dishes I've made so far and I'm looking forward to trying at least another 1/3 to 1/2 of these recipes.

Very impractical recipes most of which have long lists of ingredients, are labor intensive. Many ridiculous ingredients that you would have to make a special effort to buy or make and which could be expensive, hard to find or fussy to make - examples are brine from Sweet-and-Sour Pickled Shitake, dulse flakes, coconut sugar, nutritional yeast, miso, nut milk, sunflower sprouts, linseed meal, rice paper wrappers, kimchi, fresh tumeric root, coconut nectar, heirloom carrots, tumeric dukkah, preserved lemons, fermented hot chili sauce, kelp noodles, hemp hearts, nigella seeds etc. I would have to make substitutions and eliminations in almost all of the recipes so what's the point? If you want to stock your pantry with exactly the ingredients and staples the author does, then you can eat exactly as she does. Otherwise, the point of this book seems to be for the author to show how special she is rather than make recipes that are accessible to others.

Great recipes! I love to cook and keep a lot of things in stock in my kitchen--including a lot of what is used in this book. This cookbook is not for your traditional cook, but if you open your mind, you'll love it. One day I didn't have enough zucchini, so I added a few red potatoes to the dish, as well. I also quickly cooked the noodles in just a little olive oil. Then I made the pesto sauce called out in the recipe. Sometimes you have to go with what you have. It was delicious and everyone wants it again. The cookbook is filled with great recipes, ideas, and inspiration.

This cookbook is a great start for venturing beyond simple zoodles. As others mentioned in their reviews, the ingredients in some of the recipes are a bit outside the norm (it is a vegan cookbook, after all), but - unless you are a strict vegan - all you have to do is substitute and things are delicious. I live on a tiny Caribbean island and finding the basics is sometimes a challenge. Still, I can adapt these recipes and create really fun, spiralized dishes. A nice addition to my cookbook collection, with pretty pictures to inspire me.

Recipes have ingredients that aren't common-at least in my kitchen. Using a dehydrator is also not an option, as I don't have room for one in my kitchen. Wish the Kindle sample would have shown some recipes, then I wouldn't wasted money on it. The Ali Mafucci spiralizer cookbooks are better-written for the everyday cook.

This short book (~100 pages) is a compilation of about 5 speeches and essays given by the author, supplemented by prefaces, introductions, and afterwords. The book rails against compulsory institutionalized education at its most focused, but also spirals out into railing against "networked" society in general. Along the way, Gatto reveals that he seems to be a creationist of some sort--at least to the degree that he finds an issue with evolution being taught as a "fact" instead of a "theory *cough*--and that TV is bad. Very bad. In fact, escapism of any kind seems to be bad, really. You could apply his theory to meaning that all fiction, all video gaming, all fantasy, sci fi, etc is all bad. To me, this seems like a decidedly old fashioned attitude rooted more in a disdain of change than any profound argument.But when Gatto critiques institutionalized education, he is right on point. I've ordered his next book about A Different Kind of Teacher: Solving the Crisis of American Schooling. Basically, if you can get past the kind of antique-elitism that colors the vision of many of the "old generation," you'll find relevant critique here.

While this might seem obvious in hindsight, it isn’t being employed that much at all in our modern environs.Throughout the length of the book, Gatto fiercely touches upon the many different factors that have helped cause this growing dilemma. Some of these include the overwhelming amount of television being watched by society in general, and more specifically by children, while other components have to deal with the inherent designs of schooling such as the fragmentation of education, the removal of the family from an individual’s education, the poor life tenets individuals are taught, and much more.One of the best parts of the book is what Gatto calls ‘The 7-Lesson School Teacher’, where the author shows what teachers are truly expected to inculcate into students. Once read, this particular lesson to the reader might seem facetious, but it’s really not. I didn't enjoy reading this book. We homeschool with a mostly "unschooling" or interest-driven methodology slant so I would have expected this book to be affirming. Instead I found it unsettling. The way the arguments and opinions were presented made it feel like a series of loosely justified, angry rants. I felt I was reading propaganda from a divisive and militant speaker intent on proving a massive and deliberate conspiracy. The state of schools today (I think) is more likely linked to apathy and top-heavy centralized management of the organization. That was formed less or if some manic desire to rubber stamp children and more out of a realization that the unequality in substance and resources from one school to another boilled down to cruelty drawn along socioeconomic and racial lines. We continue to smooth away the curriculum into easier to teach and quick to understand lumps because it's easier to measure. If you take out coverage of topics that could create controversy, there's less complaint from those masses that participate. Industrialized schooling is not borne from a calculated elitist conspiracy but the mundane ease of generalized application to a large population.

Good book. I have spent almost twenty years in college education. Colleges had to adjust their material to the watered down curriculum that gets passed on to it from high schools. At one point I had attempted teaching in the high school system but it is poisoned. They are more oriented to social indoctrination than education. There is still safety in Mathematics and the physical sciences if you can make it to upper division classes.

About the Author

Hal Shelton is a seasoned executive with corporations, nonprofits, and investment organizations. He uses his knowledge and expertise to help small businesses be successful. In the corporate world, Hal was CFO of a NYSE listed alternative energy company for which he quarterbacked its IPO. Hal also held senior financial management positions with an oil and gas company and was on the board of directors of a NASDAQ listed technology company where he led its successful “going private” transaction. For nonprofits, Hal is a board member and mentor for the SCORE Association – a volunteer organization that provides education and training to small businesses. Hal helps small businesses take advantage of new business opportunities, develop business plans, and find and qualify for financing, with the goal of increasing the business’s value and adding jobs. Also, Hal served on the board/CFO for a health clinic. Hal is a member of Blu Venture Investors (BVI). This active angel investing group supports early-stage entrepreneurs in the Mid-Atlantic Region, with a primary focus on technology companies. Hal serves on the board of directors for three of these companies. Hal holds a BS from Carnegie Mellon University, an MBA from the University of Chicago, and an honors diploma from the University of Vienna, Austria.

I normally don't mind an informal tone but this book went too far. It's like someone rambling for hours. After a while it is annoying.There is absolutely no example of a plan. It gives the components of a plan and definitions. The only examples given are on financials. Other than that he says search the internet. What's the point of buying the book if that is all I am going to read?I regret purchasing this substandard book.

Shelton's clear and thoughtful approach to the steps in writing a business plan reveal he knows what he's talking about and can communicate it in clear and concise language. What I particularly like is the real life examples he gives to further your understanding. Chapter 13 on how to begin the financial section is not only a blueprint for how to do it, but also suggests how to think about it, what options you can choose in making your assumptions, then his recommendation of which is best. Other sections on financing your business are rich in info as well as in practical advice, again showing his lengthy experience and depth of knowledge. Anyone who needs a business plan couldn't do better than following this practical and well written guide to how to do one.

Hal is right on point with this book. If you're starting a new business, refining an existing business or want to bring along the next generation of leadership in your current business, this book is a "must have". Hal is very clear on the "why" behind each business plan element and gives the practical examples and tools. The focus isn't just on cost management (like most write about today) but also on growing topline. I'm looking forward to the sequel.

Shelton presents an honest account of what a business plan should cover and get right in order to secure finance and to have the business taken seriously, especially during the early stages. It's a very short book, practically an essay, but very clear, very direct and very useful. I'd highly recommend this for anyone who is thinking seriously about starting their own business.

We have all seen the horrific images of the deadly March 11, 2011, tsunami in Japan, which occurred as the result of the powerful category 9.0 Tohuku earthquake that literally wiped many Pacific-facing communities off the face of the earth. And while many of these images did not show the awful toll taken on the human populations, the number of dead and missing ranks this event as nearly cataclysmic. But surprisingly, many thousands of Japanese schoolchildren, whose schools were in the direct path of the tsunami, survived the awful calamity because their teachers and administrators heeded the warnings and took timely action to evacuate their charges to higher ground, except one: Okawa Elementary School in Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture. There, the huge 35-foot wave literally over-topped the school building and because the principal and teachers had waited too long to take action, many were killed when they opted to not flee to a hill directly behind the school and were washed away on much lower ground. 70 of 108 students were lost along with 9 of the school's 13 teachers. Throughout other areas of Japan that were effected by the onrushing tsunami waves, only 2 other schoolchildren lost their lives. This superbly authored book tells the story through the eyes of some of the children's parents and gives an intimate insight into their unimaginable losses, their futile efforts to recover their children's bodies for burial and gives detailed insight into the vast labyrinth of the Japanese legal system, where customs often override common sense efforts to reach the truth. David McNeill, a British citizen, lives and works in Japan and provides an insight into a country that few Westerners fully understand. His narrative is an insightful and sensitive look into what likely will be one of this century's most monumental natural disasters.

The only way for me to comprehend tragedy on a huge scale is to understand it from the perspective of real people, with names and stories. Lucy Birmingham delivers that and then some in this very emotive telling of the 2011 Tsunami and resulting nuclear meltdown at Fukushima in Japan. I came away in awe of the survival instincts of human beings and the immense and destructive power of mother-nature. Peter Smith, Author, Hiring Squirrels.

The material is engaging - the individual accounts and experiences of survivors give a good perspective on what happened in various locales - but the writing is so amateurish that about one sentence per page requires re-reading to understand. The garbled grammar is not as bad as some translations found in user guides of many electronic products, but I just finished reading David Lochbaum's in-depth "Fukushima: The Story of a Nuclear Disaster" and the differences in syntax and clarity between these two books are astonishing.

Most current-events books have short shelf lives, but this one is strong

I thought this book was well-written and researched and gave the human side to an important issue we need to know about to know about our world.

Without a doubt this is the greatest crime read of the year. In total it is the story of how the company known as TEPCO controlled the Japanese press and covered up what really happened in the Fukushima nuclear disaster. Two brave reporters who lived in Japan during the tsunami and earthquake mix personal stories of people who experienced the disaster and a detailed exposure of how the Japanese media, and then the world press, underplayed the unraveling of the nuclear accident. Beautifully written and footnoted, this compelling book is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the nuclear and information world we live in.

I couldn't put it down. Beautifully and sensitively written. I hope that it has wide readership.

I liked this account of a disaster that I knew very little about. I like the way the writer decided to tell the story as a series of alternating episodes from the points of view of various survivors. The book contains some excellent photographs that give a sense of the vastness of the destruction.

Absolutely beautiful history of Louisiana. If you like to send snail mail I would recommend two packets because I had a stack of cards that I was saving for myself!!

Great collection. I wish it had more postcards...I bought this to mail out but now I want to keep all of them.

This is a gorgeous book of postcards showing New Orleans Cemeteries. Such lovely buildings, monuments, and decadent ruins. I toured the cemeteries when I visited New Orleans and likes the architecture of the cemeteries. They are truly cities of the dead. Beautiful postcards that can be removed and mailed if you wish.

I use these for Postcrossing.com, good selection that gives people in other countries a glimpse of New Orleans that they might not otherwise see. The cemeteries are one of my favorite things about NOLA and I like to share that with others.

The postcards are excellent for the value. They come in a book. They are perferated on the sides however you can use a paper cut and remove that everyone I have sent to has certainly enjoyed them. Thank you
