I read The Borden Murders in one gulp. Then I went back and re-read it. It's that interesting a topic, and Sarah Miller handles it in a way that makes for a compulsive page-turner. I knew that it was targeted at a younger audience than I fit into (ahem), but I have to tell you --- if this is what middle-school readers are capable of understanding, then more power to them. The writing is lucid and she makes the actual timetable of the murders understandable in terms of where everyone was, or at least claimed to be (no mean feat). The book is also scrupulously fair in regard to the identity of the murderer. Miller frankly admits that in the end, she is still in the dark. But for many readers, she will have accomplished an enormous achievement in regard Lizzie Borden's reputation. Miller argues the case for an unknown murderer so well that even those disposed to believe that Lizzie did do it must concede that much of the evidence has been organized so poorly that we have not heard the case against Borden as the killer.Did she persuade me that Lizzie was innocent? No, but the book made me want to argue about it!The photos are well chosen, and not gruesome. Miller skims lightly over the most obvious explanation of Lizzie's infatuation with Nance O'Neill and Emma's departure from their shared home. Mustn't scandalize the younglings.This is a terrific read at any age. I only wish that books about topics this well-handled had been available when I was in middle school, but of course the printing press had only just been invented.

I enjoyed reading all the details and facts about the case and it has got me thinking a bit more deeply about Lizzie. It is quite interesting how ill equipped the law was for dealing with an alleged murderess during the 1890s. I do wonder if any evidence could of been preserved if we could know the truth in the present. As I read through Sarah Miller’s historical review of the case I did find my mind did not change on the main question of did she do it? I believe she did but that her sister was also involved in some way.

Well written, not at all dry, really interesting and the author just reports the facts. We'll never really know if Lizzie Borden actually killed her father and step mother. Where is the murderer weapon, and why was all the focus on Lizzie and not her older sister? Even the uncle and servant was a suspect. Or were both sisters in on it?

This was a really fascinating look at a morbid piece of history. We may never know what really happened but the facts laid out in this book were intriguing. Lizzie may have been found innocent in a court of law but was definitely guilty in public opinion. The entire situation is just sad.

I was first introduced, over fifty years ago, to the infamous Lizzie Borden through a high school production of a play called The Legend of Lizzie. Then in 1967, I purchased Victoria Lincoln’s book A Private Disgrace. I thought it was the ultimate resource book for Lizzie’s murders. (The author of the book I’m reviewing here says that Lincoln, who was a neighbor of Lizzie Borden, wrote a book that was quite flawed.) Then I went on to Agnes DeMille’s A Dance of Death, an account of DeMille’s research into the Borden murders in preparation for her ballet Fall River Legend. Since all that, I’ve also seen a couple of movies about the murders, so I feel like I’m steeped in the tale of Lizzie Borden. And now, along comes Sarah Miller’s The Borden Murders: Lizzie Borden and the Trial of the Century. I eagerly awaited the book, and although I can’t say that I overwhelmingly enjoyed it, I did find it an interesting addition to the lore I already knew. Miller has written a well-researched book, and she has humanized Lizzie in a way that I never saw before. The author sought out anecdotes and details that would show that Lizzie was a frightened young woman on trial. The outcome is not different from any other account, for this is history after all, but we do finish the book feeling differently about Lizzie and understanding the outcome of the trial a bit better. Miller’s book is supposedly written for young adults, but its subject matter and her approach are very adult. Teens will be engrossed in the book, but do not be fooled—this book is a welcome addition to Lizzie Borden lore, and adults will find it captivating. My one complaint is a minor one. Miller peppers the text with sidebars. I found the facts and tidbits in these sidebars to be fascinating, but I also found them a bit distracting, for I didn’t want to leave the flow of the story to find out such things as the difference between an inquest and a trial or how one kind of fabric differs from another. And yet, the sidebars enriched the story because this was all information that we likely, as modern readers, would not know. So I heartily recommend The Borden Murders for all ages.

This is so well written and well researched- I highly recommend it. I found out about it from a Pod cast about Lizzie Borden. The story is much more interesting and complicated than the old tales, songs or even recent films- would have you believe. If you are at all interested in what happened- this is the book for you. A real page turner.

For my purposes using this book to teach a brief reading lesson to elementary age students this book worked well. I chose the I like it rating because the information was correct and it suited my purposes. However, as an equine professional, I noticed that though technically correct some of the terminology is currently not widely used in America, at least in my primary breed and area in the Mid-Atlantic region. Little things like calling all chestnut colored horses sorrels instead of chestnut and not mentioning that the two colors can be interchangeable is not major but as an equine horsemanship instructor I like precision in my terminology and teach my students the multiple common terms within the industry for clarification.

Lots of info about horses but very few familiar breeds. Got it for my niece. Thought she could be a genius on facial markings, body colors, parts, gaits and modern breeds. Everyday facts she could use at horse camp. Unfortunately with this book my niece would have been able to tell her friends about a horse developed in an abstract country in the 1600's but only a little about the modern quarter horse. Instead I gave it away and got the Album of Horses and a couple others. This book will be great for someone who is looking to expand their knowledge with unusual, uncommon and rare facts.

Great little book for horse crazy kids, aimed at the 10-13 year old age group. Full of fun facts, lovely photos, sturdy binding. I gave it as a gift and it was very appreciated.

Nice informative book with interesting facts on horses. I didn't give it high score because of the size is too small with smaller print. I had seen these books long ago in a store with much larger size and print. Not sure if they are mad anymore larger

Gave these books as Christmas gifts for the amazing young Equestrians that give so much to an all volunteer run horse & burro rescue. They loved them!

Bought this for 6-yr old grandson who is into horses. Great size for small hands, full of info about many more horse breeds, full color. Very pleased with this book & the series by Pocket Genius (also have the dinosaur book).

I enjoyed this book because I like reading about how the NBA developed. Many of the players and even certain games Rod. mentions I was able to witness. In fact, one of my favorite questions when talking about basketball is. Did you know Indiana had three teams in the NBA all at one time? The nation's basketball capitol had teams in Ft. Wayne,(Pistons), Indianapolis (Olympians) and in Anderson,(Packers). I saw games there and have fond memories of those games. Thanks to Rod for bringing to life again many of those famous players. Frankie Brian, who played for Ft. Wayne, was one of my favorite players and I talked to him on the phone a few years ago. He told me he still shoots a 100 free throws a day! I also had a letter from my favorite player, Paul Arizin. These players and others are mentioned in my book Growing Up in Indiana: The Culture & Hoosier Hysteria Revisited which any true basketball fan might enjoy reading. Hot Rod's book is well worth reading if you like stories with the NBA as a main focus. I remember seeing him play and he is a credit to the sport..

The book is fun for basketball fans and it was especially fun for me graduating from high school with Hot Rod and knowing of the other stars. The writing is okay. The book binding was not ok. It broke and an entire section came loose.

Hot Rod Hundley was the first player drafted in the 1957 NBA draft. He played six years for the Lakers in Minneapolis and Los Angeles. Following his playing career, Hot Rod has remained active is the sport. He is currently the play by play announcer for the Utah Jazz. Since 1957, he has seen or played with or against almost every great NBA player. In his book, which is basically his basketball autobiography, Hundley analyzes the game and its great and not so great players. Hot Rod Hundley was a showy basketball player; he was fancy and "cool" long before they became essentials in the professional game. His writing is much the same as his game was. His book is a good interesting read. His style is both conversational and informative. He gives his opinions freely and unhesitantly. He can be lavish with his praise and unsparing with his criticism. If you are a basketball fan or a Hot Rod Hundley fan, you will enjoy this book.

This is a refreshing and amusing book about a man who has made the NBA a more entertaining place for the basketball fan. You do not have to be a Rod Hundley fan, a Utah Jazz fan, or even a basketball fan to enjoy his opinions and experiences. Well, I am glad I bought it because it is easy to understand and it made me confident enough to buy one. I haven't had a bad-hair-day since I bought this book. The book has countless tips that were previously unknown to me and I enjoyed trying them out on my new lace wig. I can say for sure I learned many new things concerning lace wigs from the book.Anna

Good for those newly beginners in wearing wigs but not new to seasoned wearers. The author also assumes that all lace wigs are human....giving extensive info on what color and perm chemicals do to the wig. This info is not needed if the wig is synthetic because synthetic wigs resist all color or peeking services.........but the book is not a complete bust....there is good info in there. Just not any new, mind blowing ideals.

Technology has improved some synthetics to endure heat. Clients who suffer from allergies (such as pollen) find it easier to wash synthetic wigs, which don't lose curls when wet, more frequently when eliminating their hair of allergens. A short session devoted to this would be great for all lace wig enthusiasts. Otherwise, great quick read!

Great little book - just nails it in terms of content - no fluff. If you are a coach of Girls you should read this and if you are a male coach of girls read this twice. It teaches quickly what it took me several seasons to learn on my coaching journey - first as parent, then team parent, then assistant coach and now coach of a Girls U12 recreation soccer team.Key lessons- Girls will compete after they bond - and so you need to give them opportunities to bond e.g. early in practice or make a water break take a little longer- Break up any cliques that form- Keep it fun- Lots of positive reinforcement but make it genuine- You have to build trust and safety - they won't try or take risks if the feeling is that failure means punishment. You need to create "emotional safety".Lots of fun ideas e.g.- Coaches' forfeit- Cupcakes for birthdays- The "How to be a better teammate" game.This is a quick read but should be handed out to every Girls' team coach Day 1.

I'm pretty sure I'm holding the new bible for coaching girls’ sports. I love this book because it's as if the authors are inside the heads of the girls, revealing insights as to what will be most supportive for them as athletes and as human beings. I wish I could’ve had an extra copy or two of this resource on hand over the past several years as I watched my daughters grapple with issues on the soccer field. Would’ve saved a lot of heartache on the sidelines. I particularly liked the frameworks for how best to manage team dynamics, increase internal motivation, and tips for getting back on track when things become unsteady. I also loved the chapters on dealing with cliques as well as body image issues, some timely and relevant. Glad I found this book--great practical suggestions.

When I started coaching youth soccer it was all about X's and O's. It took a few seasons but eventually I realized the core of coaching was in connecting to the players and working with them in a more holistic fashion. This book details some essential ideas for how to coach girls that will help make those connections allowing you to go beyond teaching technique and tactics (still needed, but only part of the equation). Wish I had read this when I started coaching, but still learned a lot and would recommend to both new and experienced coaches.

As a profesional music teacher and mother of both a boy and a girl, I highly recommend this book. Many aspects, such as "Growth Mindset" and "Positive Reinforcement" can be applied to any sport or even how to coach kids to prepare for music competitions. My daughter has played in various levels of AYSO teams and two California Club teams, with some coaches who were great at coaching girls, and some who did not understand the difference in coaching boys and girls. This book should be required reading for all coaches, as it will help coaches to build player confidence, stronger team chemistry, and ultimately, the girls will choose to stay and develop with this team and in the sport.
