In this latest title by Joel Comiskey, he does an effective job of sharing principles taught in the cell church model for two decades. The book is based on Dr. Jim Egli's statistically accurate research on small group health, which I have been following for many years. If you've read any of Dr. Egli's work or gone through his excellent workshop called Upward, Inward, Outward, Forward, you'll see a lot of familiar content here. (As I read through the pre-release version I was given I was pleased to see some of the seminar content in this book. It makes a very good companion piece for any church who decides to host the seminar as a pre-seminar book to read or a follow-up book to work through afterwards.)If you've only read small group texts (vs. cell group resources), you may indeed be surprised by a few things shared. For example, the statistical correlation between increased member-to-member intimacy levels and the group being open to new people. Andy Stanley wrote about how his church's groups are closed to insure intimacy between members could flourish... well, the statistical analysis doesn't prove this out. In fact, it's quite the opposite. Read this book to learn why.One thing brought out in the book that I'm most pleased to see covered in-depth is the area of relational evangelism by group members. Training for relational evangelism is woefully missing in the American church today. Small group ministry will remain a pump of a program that always needs priming and a lot of maintenance and repair if the church isn't growing primarily through relational evangelism (and the relational discipleship that follows). If you read this book--and I hope you do--focus on this area of your small group ministry and see if it's lacking and work on it first. Trust me, when your small group members start reaching friends for Jesus, they will take your discipleship pathway materials and devour them immediately to get ahead of their new believers... and you'll be organically training new group leaders when a member is discipling a friend they brought to Christ.One thing mentioned in the last chapter that I felt needed a lot more emphasis is the centrality of Christ in the small group. When small group members gather in Christ's name and for his sake and let go of all other personal, group, or church agendas, powerful things will happen. And when God's power is flowing through one small group member to another member or a visitor, that's transformational! And when small group members are being powerfully used by God, they get excited enough to invite friends to join and they want to lead a group of their own. While this book just touches on this over-arching principle, you should make sure your groups meet with an expectation that Christ is in their midst and powerful things will happen if they invite his Spirit to move.In summary, I think you'll enjoy reading this book, especially if you're from the small group world where groups are typically seasonal and are used to support the pulpit ministry. The book does an excellent job of describing healthy, growing small groups as a lot more than than a supportive program.

I’ve read several of Dr. Comiskey’s books in order to learn about cell ministry and have found each of them tremendously helpful. His latest book incorporates the extensive research of Jim Egli and provides some helpful insight into making church small groups effective. There are a couple of lessons that we will be putting into practice immediately. First, the authors’ research shows that in order for groups to thrive, there must be a shift from “my group” to “our group.” We’ll be making a concerted effort to empower each member of our small groups to be involved in the ministry of the group. Second, their research showed the value of times of worship. Having already implemented this practice, we’ve seen an immediate change for the better! If you’re involved in ministry and believe in the value of small groups, this is a must-read book for you and your leaders.

Joel Comiskey is an expert in small groups and how they function. He has taken this expertise and poured it into GROUPS THAT THRIVE. In the opening pages, he compares small groups to a rain forest, then writes, “Just like that Costa Rican rain forest, groups that thrive don’t happen by chance or simply because people want their groups to flourish. Thriving communities require a supernatural mix of prayer and Spirit-led anointing that makes a way for everyone to participate, for the healing presence of God, and for vibrant life that blesses others. An excellent conclusion to a wonderful series. These books are the perfect mense of sensible, sentimental, supernatural, western. I was searching for a western with better representation than the genre has usually gotten. This series absolutely delivered. I'm kinda heartbroken that this series has gotten so little recognition. It's absolutely worth the time and i'm so glad it was out in the world when I went looking.

Bowen/Dawson's Shadow series never got the success it deserved, but those of us who stuck with it were definitely rewarded. Bowen built a fun and strange world, populated it with fun, flawed, strange characters, and made us care deeply about them. Treason was the bittersweet end the series wanted.

I’ve adored every page of this series, and I’m sad the journey is coming to an end! I had preordered the book but ended up waiting until the weekend to read it so I could binge my way through it in one emotionally exhausting sitting. I’m going to miss this cast of characters!

And so ends The Shadow series. An epic battle, guns blazing, and tears running down my cheeks.Treason of Hawks is one of the better books in the series. We pick up directly where we left off in MoC, with Sam dying on the ground and Rhett driven to save him by any means necessary. Much of the book involves Rhett coming to terms with the result of his actions and learning to live with the newly turned Sam. We see a lot of growth from Rhett as he loses and gains friends, and prepares his people for a mysterious trouble brewing out west. The ending, including the big bad, is set up very well and we even get a taste of the characters' continuing lives in the epilogue.Endings are hard but this one was fitting. Everything about it felt right, even when it was hard. Rhett and his story come full circle in difficult, but elegant, ways. I loved it.And that epilogue though!!!!!

Unlike the description for Book 2, the description for this book doesn't cry out for a correction that would be a spoiler. (I skipped reviewing Book 3.)I continued to enjoy Rhett's desperate determination and fighting spirit, as well as his temperamental imperfections and his struggle with his underlying kind nature. Other well-drawn characters reappear. The plot is about as suspenseful as I can stand (note: I'm a suspense wimp).As with the earlier books, there is a tendency to unnecessary repetition, which is mildly annoying.The author's checking off of multiple diversity boxes is less obtrusive this time around.Some readers may have qualms about where the story ends up. I don't.

Castro takes us on baby steps, from the basic construction of the net, into code beginnings, frames, their superior descendents CSS, embedding media, and even into some basic Javascript and databasing. By the end chapters she's covering browser testing, SEO, and probably too iTunes faithfully, podcasts. The appendices at the back of the book should be in every web designer's back pocket, providing special character codes, CSS properties, hexadecimal charts, and more.This was the first edition with full-color images, which proved immensly helpful when identifying code of note and their contex. Instruction is well spoken and laid out. Castro has a mellow, consistent, and clearly knowledgeable voice. While I did not make use of her paired [...] website referenced in the text, it is up as of the March 2014 date of this review and it is nice to know it is there if a topic is really stumping me.There were a few small coding and copy errors and HTML 5 is the language of today, but this book covers what is still the essence of the internet and site building, and is an classic text in the developer's library. If you're a self-learner and can handle the tedious nature of writing code for the world wide web, pick this up and read at your own pace.

There are several reasons I couldn't bring myself to give this book five stars, although I would have liked to. The author writes well and covers a lot of ground, but the pace is uneven and I feel it comes up short on the treatment of some important topics.I first learned (X)HTML by studying the fourth edition of Thomas Powell's "HTML & XHTML: The Complete Reference" HTML & CSS: The Complete Reference, Fifth Edition (Complete Reference Series)." That book was more than twice the size of Castro's book and a much more thorough and better illustrated treatment of the markup languages. However, Powell's volume was copyright 2003, and the theory and practice of "proper" web design are fast moving targets, especially considering the evolution and increasing adoption of CSS, DHTML, JavaScript and the DOM over the last decade, as well as the growing emphasis on standards and the separation of structure and presentation. I bought and read Castro's book primarily as a refresher course. I'm glad I already had a good background in the subject.I suspect the author was handicapped by the publishing style used in the "Visual Quickstart Guide" titles. That style divides each page into two columns. The outside column is used for the main explanatory text, while the gutter column displays examples--typically screen captures and/or code snippets--that illustrate the concepts discussed in the accompanying text. When I first encountered this format in one of their books on XML, I rather liked it, but the enchantment quickly faded. Structuring content such that each topic should fit in the limited space of a single column on a page just doesn't work for me. Some topics in Castro's book deserved more space; e.g., divs, forms, float, position. Limiting the code to snippets short and small enough to fit in a narrow gutter column also restricts the author's ability to properly display relevant code. The Murach books use a similar design, but it works much better; their books are a larger format and they use facing pages instead of hamstringing the authors by dividing each page into two narrow columns.I was also disappointed in not being able to find any way to post errata on the book's website; there were several I found that were not listed in the official posted errata. I enjoyed the treatment of podcasts and rss feeds at the end of the book, although those subjects seemed a bit off-topic. The last quarter of the book is devoted to a reasonably good HTML reference but, since that kind of information is readily available online, I think the space could have been used more profitably by expanding the coverage of HTML core concepts.Because of the uneven pace of instruction, the cramped presentation, and limited coverage of important layout techniques, I think this book would not be one I would recommend to someone new to HTML markup. However, I attribute the shortcomings more to the publisher than the author.

I learned to write code using Elizabeth Castro's books probably 10 years ago.I've bought the 4th, 5th and 6th editions of this book and I love them all. I've given several away to people just starting out.Here's why I love the series. I don't learn so well by going thru a step by step process to build a teacher's product. But rather, I know what I want a page to look like in the end and I want to build THAT page. I start with a general idea of what kinds of code might be required. And this book has the best index I've ever seen in a technical book.While the code examples in the book are kinda small, if you really need to see them more clearly, they're all on line.Or if you like to learn in order, I also recommend Head First HTML with CSS & XHTML. The examples are bigger and the pictures more engaging! And, you might nee d both as there is some stuff that's included in one book or the other. I've followed along in the HeadFirst books and learned a great deal. But if I want to look something up, the index in the HeadFirst books just isn't as good as the one in Elizabeth Castro's.

I'm an astrophysicist and I look through children's astronomy books frequently. There are a couple things I look for to determine whether it has enough of the 'right' information, stuff that is just crazy cool and interesting. This book has them all!! Volcanoes made out of ice and erupt liquid water, methane clouds/rain and rivers, incredible pressure and acidity on Venus, it is seriously the best book on the subject that I have seen. Great pictures, diagrams and timelines. Easy to read and understand and some incredibly mind blowing stuff. I love it!

I purchased this book for my niece along with a telescope for Christmas. She is 7 years old. She specifically called me to tell me that she "LOVES" the book. That is not something you hear from 7 year olds so I was extremely pleased. My sister tells me that my niece only needs help with a few words but wont put the book down and has been reading it constantly since Christmas (three days ago). its been snowing so no telescope set up yet, but my niece even read some of the book to me and I couldn't have been happier. I purchased this book because the pictures where outstanding and I wanted something that was visually pleasing as well as educational for my niece. I will be purchasing several other Smithsonian books like this for her. Outstanding book - worth every penny.

Got this as a birthday gift for my daughter who loves space. The book is a little advanced for her (she turned six), however it is written in a way she can understand the majority of the information. While she is a gifted reader it's not something that she would read to herself for more than a few minutes because of the large amount and range of information. However it has proved a good book to read at bedtime and will prove to be worth reading for many years to come yet. Overall great book.

My four-year-old son and I read this book together every night at bedtime. It's been every night for... two months! He can recite the sections: The Solar System, Galaxies, Exploring Space, Stars, and The Night Sky. And Reference.Beautiful pictures. Easy-to-find labels. Up-to-date information.

Bought this because my family enjoyed the "knowledge" encyclopedia so much. My 11 year old daughter and 10 year old son loved it. Great graphics, accurate facts, not too overwhelming, fun to read. Explores a lot outside of our solar system too, which is good because often these books focus on just our system. Construction is good and it has held up pretty well for being heavily used. This book has been picked up weekly by at least one of my kids or their friends and read for hours on end.

This was a Christmas gift for my great nephew who plans on working for NASA . He never put it down once he unwrapped. The content was amazing, the pictures were top quality. I enjoyed looking at this book myself. A great learning tool. His parents said it was the perfect gift for him. I would recommend all of the Smithsonian books to everyone.

Our 8 year old LOVES this book! And so do we adults! It is filled with fascinating illustrations and information the whole family will enjoy. This one does NOT Disappoint! Well worth more than the price. Highly recommended!!
