I don't want this to sound the wrong way, but you can tell this was not written by a professional writer, and that is a good thing. Most stars hand their stories off to a ghost writer who makes them sound like great authors, but this reads like a real person wrote it as an actual journal written on the scene at the time. It gives it a real feel that I enjoyed.Mrs. Jolie-Pitt does an excellent job of making you feel as if you are there. I recommend it and think that it would make an excellent choice for teenage readers to broaden their awareness of the world.

Very moving. It is obvious that Angelina is committed to helping people in dire straits. She is so willing to learn and work hard. She is so calm and loving. She does not expect special treatment in any way. I admire her even more after reading her heartfelt notes. Thank you for all you do, Angelina

I found the book to be realistic and a good read. I knew what I was reading was true because Angelina has a heart as long as her legs. She is genuine . I know because the human emotions she described are what i feel or would have felt in the situations of what she experienced. This woman is genuine and I wish her, Brad and her unborn child all the respect , health and love that she herself reaps.She cares about humanity. A prominent actress and she went over to 3rd world countries to see, and try to make better and to write a selfless book of her travels to educate people in general, A selfless expedition. A true humanitarian.The book is enlightening and it has shed a light on the actress that noone can dim in my eyes.Prior to this read- I did not give the actress much thought. I changed my mind for good.Bravo Angelina, much regard and respect to you !

read this if you're an Angelina Jolie fan or like learning how the UN helps people OR if you just want to get in the head of a celebrity that is actually super normal. she is a fantastic writer even for a journal and this book opened my eyes to a world we are shielded from. I very much appreciate that she shared this.

At first when you pick up this book, it is hard to imagine that it might be anything worthwhile. After all, it is written by an actress who could not possibly understand the hardships and struggles of people worlds away. This is quickly disproved by Jolie's book.Her raw accounts of everything she saw tugs at the heart strings and paints the pictures of the lives of people's living in the worst humanitarian conditions. Her love and heartbreak and present on every page, and her willingness to learn and help is something that we can all learn from. Jolie's book allows stories that may not otherwise be heard to see the light of day. A book that everyone should read because it teaches that one person can make a difference and that our problems are really not as big as we might like to think. I strongly recommend this book. She has seen for us a world miles away that needs our help, and reading this is the first step to realizing that something must and can be done.

She's different in so many ways and she makes a difference with all her humanitarian work.I can understand why the UNHCR agency has such high rates of suicide and depression. Reading books about other countries who live in permanent terror like the ones she describes always depresses me, even though I'm thousands of miles away culturally and physically, and safe behind the soft pages of the book. I can't imagine the emotional scars that all those persons are left with when they are lucky enough to keep their lives. Anonymous to the rest of the world and yet still very valuable lives. Dead just seems such a high price to pay for respect and integrity. I can't imagine where they gather the strength to keep smiling.It would be easier, less risky and less emotionally demanding to just send funds from the comfort of her home, and yet she is willing to share with all these people her time helping out in whatever ways she can. And that's why it's so admirable what she does. It's easy to mourn the dead, but it's hard to help the living. To all those refugees she is just some woman who wants to help. A remarkable woman with noble feelings. She masters beautiful gestures that make people feel good and loved and recognized and valued, and that alone can be more important than having a lot of other things that seem necessary and are necessary for all of them, but not any more so than the grace and beauty of a person whose mere existence makes it possible for them to keep their hopes up.As I read once, you can train thousands or millions of political theorists and economists and theologians and bureaucrats, but charm and charisma, and the desire to put celebrity to good use: hundreds of years of training can't teach that or invent it. And Angelina has what it takes to make all this happen. I can't help those people because I don't have the economic resources to do so. But I'm grateful that there are people like her out there who are willing to share what they have, and to sacrifice some of her own comfort to help out. It's a good read if you want to sensitize yourself about some world issues.

I didn't know Angelina Jolie had written a book, and incredibly a book about her experiences in refugee camps. It is amazing what those people go through, and how she, being an artist, expresses her feelings of the situation. There is no acting here. I admire Angelina. She might have her issues. I knew she was a beautiful women in the outside, what I didn't know was how beautiful she was in the inside. Great Read Recommend It!!!!!

A very sobering read. Very well written. It is written like you'd expect in a journal and it accounts Mrs. Jolie's observations and experiences during her introduction to working with UNHCR. Very thoughtfully written and you learn quite a bit reading it.

This is a really wonderful coloring book filled with many Christian-based designs. I also want to mention immediately that it is one of the better made coloring books that I have purchased but more about that later. The coloring book has 50 pages of designs and additional bookmarks, tags, and cards that you can color and cut out for your use.What I love about the book is that almost every one of the designs is Christian-based. Many Christian coloring books only devote one third or so of the design pages to providing a Christian message. In this book, page after page is devoted to Bible quotes. The words are incorporated into the design and are part of what you will color. That will make it easy to meditate on the words while I am coloring. The verses are also cited so it is easy to look up and see the words in context.The book is very well made. The cover is extremely strong hardboard. It is printed on one side only of heavyweight perforated paper. The binding is at the top and is spiral bound. The print quality is excellent and dark. I really appreciate this binding as you can flip to any page and have access to the entire design. The cover then becomes a portable “desk” which allows you to color easily when on-the-go. While I am not a “lefty”, spiral bound works fantastic for them as they don't have to color over the “hump” of the binding. A few of the designs extend beyond the perforations, which is a little frustrating. I won't remove these from the book as I will lose a bit of the design if I do. This could be easily solved in future additions to this series by sizing the design to fit below the perforations.This is printed on great paper. All of my alcohol-based markers bled through but none of my water-based ones did. Gel pens worked fantastic as well and did not bleed through or leave shadows at the back. Coloring pencils worked nicely as well and behaved according to their type of lead (soft/hard core.) This publisher also published a book geared at a younger starting age (but I like it, too!) which has a grade of paper I wish they had used for their other books. That book (“Inspirational Coloring Book for Girls”) does not even allow for alcohol-based markers to bleed through. In any case, put a piece of card stock or chipboard or even heavyweight paper below the page you are working on and you will prevent ink from seeping through.These are the coloring medium that I use for testing. If there is something else you feel I should be testing, please let me know and I will see if I can add it to my growing pile:Markers: 1) alcohol-based – Copic Sketch, Prismacolor double ended markers (brush and fine point), Sharpies (fine and ultra-fine) and 2) water-based – Tombows dual end markers (brush and fine point), Stabilo 88, Staedler triplus fineliners, and Pentel markersGel Pens: Sakura, Fiskars, Uni-ball Signo 0.38/0.28 and TekwriterColoring Pencils: Prismacolor Premier Soft Core, Derwent Colorsoft, Prismacolor Verithins, and Faber-Castel Polychromos

Love love love this color book. This is the book I go to every time I'm ready to relax. Love the top spiral and the thick pages.

What a nice book. The cover just blew me away. So much thought went into this book. The spiral spine is great. The cover is like a hard cover book. The pages are thick and great quality. They can be removed. The only issue I experienced was that with my fiskars and my markers, they smeared some. That xan be dealt with if you just let dry and pay attention to what you should color first. I will buy this again. The scripture is lovely. I love this book.

I have really started getting into the Adult Coloring recently and I am always on the lookout for a book that has both scripture in it and that has a good quality page I can color on. This book by Christian Art Publishers is my ALL TIME FAVORITE that I have purchased anywhere!!The book itself is bound at the top so it makes it easy to flip to the page you are working on and fold it so you aren't dealing with the binding of the book interferring with the page you are working on. The pages themselves are beautiful!! Each one has a verse and the picture describes the verse or goes along with it in some way. The quality of the paper is nice enough, that I have several that I am going to pull out of the book and put in frames to hang in my kids room. I color with both gel pens and colored pencils and love the way they both react to the pages in this book!! I have included some pictures so you can see some of the pages and the quality of the drawings. I will be purchasing more from this company! I paid retail price for this product, with no promise for a review.

About a year ago, I discovered the joy and relaxation of adult coloring books and it's been both stress-relieving and fun! I've built quite the collection of coloring books and had fun with colored pencils and gel pens as well. I was delighted to see that there are Christian inspiration and religious coloring books too. This one looked like just what I wanted so I ordered it in hopes that it would live up to my expectations."The Word in Color" Biblical coloring book is a spiral-bound, hardcover book containing Bible verses meant to inspire reflection while coloring. The book measures 7 1/4 inches (L) by 10 1/8 inches (H) by 1/2 inch (W). The pages themselves measure 7 inches by 10 inches. There are 52 one-sided pages with beautiful designs and Bible verses. Of those 52 pages, 47 pages boast Bible verses and designs such as floral, nature, or various modern, tasteful pictures that are fun to color. Of the 5 remaining pages, there are 6 bookmarks, 6 small cards, and 13 gift tags. You'll need to cut the cards, bookmarks, and gift tags out and punch holes through the gift tags and bookmarks for ribbons. The tops of all of the pages are perforated so you can tear the pages out if you wish to frame or give to friends and family or you can just leave them in the book. The paper used is nice and thick, the designs are boldly printed and don't look cheap, and almost all of the designs are easy to color, with just a few intricate ones.I love this book and am so happy with my purchase! I love the Bible verses and the pictures included. While I'm coloring I reflect on the verse on that particular page or something I heard on K-LOVE or listen to Christian music. The drawings promote thoughtfulness and peacefulness and are a lot of fun to color. So far I've mostly used my Prismacolor Premier Colored Pencils, Soft Core, 72-Count and they color wonderfully in this book. I've also tried Top Quality Gel Pens (Pack of 60) and those work nicely. The color doesn't bleed through but the backs of the pages show indentations from where I colored so it's not a big deal to me. There are a few pages where the design is printed over the perforated edges and past it so if you tear those pages out, part of the design will remain in the book. If anything, you could just leave those pages in the book or tear them out if that doesn't bother you.Overall, I am very happy with this book and recommend it to anyone who wants a religious coloring book! There are many designs to color and you can share it with a friend since the pages are perforated or just color it all yourself. I noticed that Christian Art Publishers also has other coloring books and I may have to purchase those as well. I feel this book is nicely-priced and I wouldn't hesitate to buy this for a friend or family member as a gift. This is a great inspirational coloring book and I highly recommend it!

I have recently purchased this book, at another outlet by chance, and am highly pleased with its content. If you want to throw a party with great drinks with even greater names, fabulous finger foods - or have a small dinner with appetizing results, invest in this book. I was so excited, since my life now revolves around hosting, to find a book that is immaculately put together and will not hurt the bank. The only thing I can not believe is that I hadn't found this book sooner. Why is it hiding on amazon? This book should be advertized more.Suggestion: Use this book to organize and throw a fabulous party, and at said party, hand out a menu with a list of the names of these drinks. The guests will not know what to do with themselves and I promise it will garner an oustanding response from the revelers. You may never get to go to sleep ;)Enjoy.

With fifteen years of beverage catering all over the world under my belt, I can assure anybody considering this book: buy it! Planning parties always involves lots of stressful details, calculations, planning, and organization that make the process a headache rather than a joy. This book does the opposite, thankfully. Miss Charming helps anybody from a pro to a home enthusiast handle everything without forgetting about the fun and creativity that every cocktail party should have. It's a fun, easy read packed with useful information including resources, recipes, and helpful hints. The recipes are great and well-written, unlike most cocktail recipe books which confuse even the most seasoned bartender with vague procedures and obscure ingredients and feature lots of unpleasant recipes that nobody drinks these days. Not this one: Cheryl explains in plain english every delicious recipe so your cocktails come out perfect. The hints and tips she provides are worth the price of the book alone. (Do YOU know how much ice you need for a party of 100 people? This book tells you!) This is the book that will save your next party and make you look like a genius. She was known as a sorceress who lived on an island and turned men into pigs. We know from the Odyssey that Circe was often seen working at a huge loom surrounded by dangerous animals such as wolves and lions, yet they were all under her control. We also know from the Odyssey that Odysseus - by virtue of his wiles - not only avoids Circe’s sorcery but beds her as well. When he leaves she gives him advice on how to survive the perils on his seaward journey home to his homeland of Ithaca, such as Scylla and Charybdis, so he can reunite with his beloved wife Penelope and son Telemachus.So why did I like this book so much? Well, stand back, because I’m about to gush.I am a big fan of Greek mythology, and I was a big fan of this author’s previous book, The Song of Achilles. Yet this one was even better.Circe was not a major figure in the Odyssey; in fact when I first opened the book I realized I got her mixed up with Calypso. But I won’t make that mistake anymore. This minor character has now become my favorite character of all thanks to this author’s brilliant work.Because this book is told from Circe’s point of view, we get to intimately know her - not just her history and story but her thoughts as well. The reason this is so important is because we come to empathize with Circe. We tend to think of the Greek Gods as so fickle and often cruel - and indeed they are often depicted that way - yet with Circe, we meet a goddess who is so human and so very, very likable.The reason I made the “no spoilers” comment at the start, is because Circe’s experiences include her meeting and interacting with various other figures from Greek myth, and it’s a big part of the enjoyment of this novel to experience it the way the author intended, without knowing what is going to happen next.I took a few days to read this book but that was not because it was a slow read. Just the opposite; I was so happy while reading it that I would stop myself after each chapter just to pace myself so it wouldn’t end too soon.I highly (obviously) recommend this to any fans of Greek mythology and for sure to anyone who enjoyed The Song of Achilles. But you don’t have to know much about the Odyssey or Greek mythology to love this book. Although this novel is about a god, it’s really a story about what it means to be human.

{My Thoughts}What Worked For MeA Classic Tale Reimagined – Taking a classic story and reinventing it with a modern twist is nothing new. We see it time after time, but the usual reimagining places the characters and plot in a contemporary setting as the story plays out. With Circe, Madeline Miller kept the characters and the setting, and instead shifted the focus, placing it solely on Circe. Those of you with a background in mythology will see many, many elements from classic Greek mythology (especially The Odyssey) popping up in this book. However, if you’ve lived under a rock and never even knew there was such a thing as mythology it won’t matter. Miller gives you everything you need to know and she does it seamlessly.A Woman with Attitude – If you’re anything like me, you will come to adore Circe, the book and the woman. Born into one of the two most powerful families of gods, Circe adored her father, Helios, but never quite measured up. Where her siblings were gorgeous and powerful from an early age, Circe was plain and seemingly powerless. Tormented by her own family, Circe grew more and more fascinated with mortals. Falling in love with one, brought out her previously unknown powers of witchcraft.“I was too wild to feel shame. It was true. I would not just uproot the world, but tear it, burn it, do any evil I could to keep Glaucos by my side. But what stayed most in my mind was the look on my grandmother’s face when I’d said that word, pharmaka. It was not a look I know well among the gods.”This girl had gumption and she used her new power to punish her rival, creating a monster all came to feared. But, she paid a price for going too far. Circe was banished to the small island of Aiaia for eternity. This is where the book Circe really took off for me. On the island, I found it impossible not to admire and root for this woman who year after year, century after century, faced her fears, honed her powers, and learned to stand up for herself.“She was gone. But I said it anyway, to that great empty room and my son’s dreaming ears: “You do not know what I can do.”Soap Opera of the Gods – You might think a story of a woman alone on an island could get dull, but you would be wrong. Circe lived a lonely life, but was not without the occasional visitor, many bringing adventure and challenges to her life. Hermes flitted in and out with news and gossip from the worlds of gods and mortals. Her sister, Pasiphae, granted Circe temporary exile to help deal with her little Minotaur problem. Shipwrecked sailors soon discovered the wrath of Circe. And then came Odysseus, perhaps her most well known visitor, bringing to Circe a lasting love she was willing to die for. The level of drama never failed!That House – I really can’t say any more, but for those who have read Circe: I want that house!What Didn’tAbsolutely EVERYTHING worked for me in Circe!{The Final Assessment}Madeline Miller is definitely a writer to admire. Reinventing the life of a minor goddess into a remarkable woman while remaining faithful to the original mythology can be no small feat. Miller did it in the best way possible, by knowing her star character and sticking to her story. From start to finish Circe was all about Circe, no long tangents, no veering off into some other god’s story. Just Circe: her life, her feelings, her mistakes, her heart, her choices. I haven’t yet read Millers’s debut, Song of Achilles, but I will. I’m already looking forward to that next trip to ancient Greece. If it’s anything like Circe, I’m sure to find the journey immersive, entertaining, exciting, everything! Just incase I haven’t been clear, I loved Circe. She will be one of my top ten books this year. Grade: A

This book caught me by surprise. I was swept up in the tale of Circe, a goddess, and amazed by the simple truths of human life revealed. Madeline Miller captured both the beauty and bitter futility of being human, and I will be philosophically turning these thoughts over in my head for years to come. Timeless masterpiece that will only become sweeter with each read.

I’ve been waiting for Circe since I closed the endpapers of The Song of Achilles. Miller has the expert’s eye and a storyteller’s touch - a female storyteller at that, which makes her remarkable among the other writers and rewriters of the classic Greek tales.Here, her gifts are used in telling the story of Circe, child of Helios and one of the lesser gods, the first witch of the world. She spins a tale of bravery, gullibility, fear and courage; she tells the tale of a goddess who has the heart of a mortal. I don’t want to give anything away and thus ruin Miller’s spellbinding tales, but it’s not a spoiler to say that I was astounded by the ways in which Miller was able to imbue her heroine with the same human frailties and fears as those of us mere mortals: the love of a mother, the burning shame of disgrace, the slow and fast at once finding of ones identity and center, the ways in which we all reach for more than perhaps we know, the giddy ness of losing ones fear and with it, the donning of grace and gratitude.Circe’s tales are big, and they’re writ large here. And yet they feel so real and common even as they burn with a strange fire.Miller deserves to be mentioned among the greats. I look forward to her next creation with excitement and of course more than a little adoration.Give yourself the beautiful opportunity to see Circe as she has never been seen. Read this book right away!!
