Awesome reference to tropical trees. Lots of unusual trees I had never heard of.

It is not easy to say something sensible about this book. It is just too overwhelming. As can be expected these days of the Timber Press this is a lavishly illustrated, gorgeously printed and handsomely bound volume. Lay-out is immaculate. All pictures (full color) are of a beautiful quality, or better. An immense amount of information is given for each species (usually one page is devoted to each species). In view of the wealth of information provided, there is a huge potential for error, but the book appears to be remarkably error-free. A curious error is that of using "cv." before a cultivar epithet. The one error-prone category here is that of the author abbreviations in the botanical names: these do not consistently follow the recommended standard and, from time to time, are in something of a mess. Obviously, this is unlikely to trouble those who belong to the book's target audience. The other thing that can be questioned is its aim to cram so many trees into one book. However, for someone wanting a handy (if big) one-volume work on (sub)tropical trees this cannot be recommended enough. It will also make a lovely gift to just about anybody.

Certainly seems authoritative. Lots of information. A nice reference. Plenty of photos. - but:- it does not include Palmae.- the three-page identification section is mostly a list of questions but usually no indication of what to do with the answers.

I had this book on my wish list and got it for Christmas 05. I can't say anything bad about it. Very clear pictures not the line drawings. Very clearly explained and well layed out. I would recomend this book to anybody interested in learning about tropical tree's. It even had a tree that you don't find in a lot of books

although general good, I'd like it to be more cautious about the frost hardiness of each species(The reason I bought it). There are trees that are described as being more tender than they are and other that are more hardy to frosts than in reallity. I mean that USDA zones are sometimes not so accurate for some species describedBut beyond this there is a great amount of information inside it and many pictures also

I have bought several copies for my book store customers here in Panama, and all are delighted with this book. Though a bit cumbersome, it is certainly thorough, and a valuable research tool for anyone interested in the flora of the tropics. It's beautifully illustrated, a book to display as well as study, typical of Timber Press' fine volumes.

An imprescinble issue for all lovers of tropical trees. Very good colour pictures and excellent and short information. The USDA zones assigned to trees sometimes are not accuracy in my experience.

Art as Social Action: An Introduction to the Principles and Practices of Teaching Social Practice Art, by Gregory Sholette

Review

"Art as Social Action presents a sharp set of pedagogical tools for teaching and learning about art as a vehicle for social engagement. Having evolved from an innovative collaboration between Queens College and Queens Museum, the book's offerings are embedded in the workings of both community and artists, breaking down the very idea of what participation means in art and non-art contexts. Key questions of authorship, which audiences are served, how does engagement happen, and whose needs are met and how are addressed with forthright vigor. The volume importantly provides rigorous interrogation of the process as well as the outcomes; it is an essential guide to deepening social art practices and teaching them to students." —Laura Raicovich, president and executive director, Queens Museum, NYC "It's no small thing to educate at the intersection of art and social justice. It's a scope of inquiry that has tripped up art historians, artists, and college deans for multiple decades. This contribution is valuable to educators in its insight, pragmatism, and breadth." —Nato Thompson, artistic director of Creative Time, author of Culture as a Weapon: The Art of Influence in Everyday Life "This book is a great resource that connects the dots between the pedagogy for socially engaged art and the most pressing pressure points for social change. In doing so, it reinforces the urgency of this art practice, and signals clearly that social practice prioritizes societal change over academicism." —Paul Ramirez Jonas, artist and professor, Hunter College CUNY "Art as Social Action is a powerful testament to the resliience of artists and educators in keeping critical thinking and creative expression central to how we define ourselves as a people in the era of late capitalism. Chloë Bass and Gregory Sholette bookend this anthology of methodologies with their key wisdom on how, where, and why art and education blur into the social realm. Now more than ever there is a need to recognize the plurality of voices, approaches, and directions that socially engaged art practice offers. This book shows that the many-headed beast of social art practice cannot be defined singularly or sold in duplication. Any practitioner working with communities or any educator looking for strategies for engagement would benefit from the wealth of information in these pages." —R. M. Sánchez-Camus, PhD, Social Art Network, UK "Art as Social Action is not your typical book about socially engaged art. . . . It is a collection of texts by teachers who, together with their art students, look for creative ways to enter in a discussion with society outside the classroom about topics as different as labour conditions, immigrant rights or mining on sacred Native American sites. Texts by teachers who want to make works with rather than about local communities. And, hopefully, make this world a slightly fairer and kinder one." —we make money not art (blog)"Art as Social Action presents a sharp set of pedagogical tools for teaching and learning about art as a vehicle for social engagement. This book has useful advice and examples that can be helpful wherever you are along life’s journey. Lisa & Paula not only write about their successes, but include times of adversity and growth experiences, with input from other corporate leaders. Even though I’m retired I enjoyed reading it, and see it as a valuable resource for leaders in all areas, e.g., parent, teacher, pastor, military, supervisor, coach – even if not wanting to climb a corporate ladder.

As a young business professional (also in the Pharma industry), I remember being super excited to hear that PBS and Lisa Grimes had collaborated to write this book, but I had no idea how truly enlightening their overall message would be. I'm at a point in my career where achieving success, balance and fulfillment are crucial both professionally and personally. I really appreciated the individual letters from multiple accomplished leaders, expressing words of wisdom and motivation for their younger selves.Their insights provide a very clear visual as to why its extremely important to not get carried away with internal and external expectations and to simply "Remember Who You Are."This is a MUST-READ for the young and tenured professional, both women and men...those who are searching for inspiration and guidance in all stages of life/career. Thank you Paula and Lisa for expressing such a powerful memorandum.

Paula Brown Stafford and Lisa Grimes are former business competitors who decided to become colleagues, business partners and friends instead. Remember Who You Are is a powerful set of interwoven stories, written from the generous hearts of these two exceptional and successful women. As their stories unfold, the authors reveal the importance of identifying, defining and developing the qualities and character in ourselves that we want others to see and know, and about the critical need to focus on the quality of our relationships with everyone in our lives. Although the book is written from the perspective of women in business, there are valuable lessons for any person at any stage of career and life. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking to take their career to the next level, or anyone wanting experience-based advice on balancing work and life, keeping their integrity and improving their business relationships.

As a biopharmaceutical executive I found this book to be most helpful . Balancing a demanding career and family responsibilities is a challenge for both husbands and wives in a fast paced business environment. As a married father of 3 children the book was very enlightening to see this perspective from a female executives viewpoint. Excellent tips on staying true to your mission in both career and family. Definite read for both men and women as they move forward in their careers with keeping the priorities of family responsibilities at the top of their list along with a balance towards their careers.

As a man who is embarking on a new career in corporate America, I found these stories and lessons useful for me. The do your best, be your best focus of the book comes through clearly. Whether in business or life, these lessons are rich and powerful. The book is well written and is easy to relate to whether you are a man or a woman. Lisa and Paula share their experiences and lessons learned from hard knocks, successes and failures and as such they are completely credible. Their stories are told as if you are there with them when the events occur. I look forward to reading this again so that the lessons are engrained in me.

I have been privileged to have Paula and Lisa speak at two events for my ministry, Women with Purpose. How thankful I am that the wisdom they shared at those events is now readily at my fingertips in this book along with so much more! They model "Authentic Leadership" by sharing not just practical advice but also from their own stories with honesty and humility. I appreciate that it is clearly written and to the point in a way that's compelling and hard to put down. I know I will be buying copies to give to women in my life, especially ones who are just starting in their careers.

What an inspiring read! Excellent real life stories of success and hardships framed so the rest of us can take away valuable lessons. A wonderful reminder that we are all unique and. An be successful being true to ourselves. I will be giving this as gifts to many of my friends!

This book offers great advice for anyone in the work world regardless of age, gender or job status. However, it is a must read for all young women first starting out in their professional careers. The book is jam-packed with wisdom, practical suggestions and life lessons shared generously by the authors to help other working women on their path to achieving success, creating balance and experiencing fulfillment.

Sir Gawain the Undefeated is riding comfortably upon his horse when he hears the shrieks of a damsel in distress. A dragon with fiery breath has captured the fair maiden. Sir Gawain fights off the dragon, saving the damsel. No longer in distress, Sir Gawain decides the she no longer needs his assistance and begins to ride off. The damsel is so thankful that she wants to give Sir Gawain her treasured green sash. He refuses to accept. She then offers a kiss on the check, simply to say thank you. Again, Sir Gawain refuses and rides off, leaving the damsel where he found her. This is the precursor to the rest of the story. In King Author's court, he requires his knights to be comfortable iron suits and sharp swords, just like any knight. They must also be courteous and respectful while doing their knightly duties. After relating the dragon fight, at dinner that night, Sir Gawain is flabbergasted to learn of his rudeness. The King thought it rude Sir Gawain refused the damsel's gift of thanks not once, but twice. Shameful knight behavior.Later, at the Christmas Feast, the Green Knight crashes the party to challenge a knight, specifically Sir Gawain, to a strange dual. Sir Gawain is to go first. He swings and knocks the Green Knight's head clean off his neck. The Green Knight will strike Sir Gawain, in the same fashion, in exactly one year. As the year goes by, Sir Gawain and the King decide the Green Knight must have used magic. How else could his head continue to speak after it was severed from his neck? King Arthur and his knights leave the kingdom in search of the great Merlin the Enchanter. If anyone can help Sir Gawain keep his head attached, it is Merlin. While on the trip, the King and his knights run into several interesting characters on their way to their final destination: Green Chapel. Here, Sir Gawain will face the Green Knight for what may be his last challenge. On their trip, the King and his knights will run into a strange dwarf, sorcerers, and a stubborn nobleman, but not everyone is who they profess to be. In the end, King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table will have had their abilities to fight and their manners both tested. One of those two will prove to be the better weapon. Reading the story and meeting these characters is so much fun, revealing any more would ruin it for everyone else.Sir Gawain the True is the third knight to get his own story in Mr. Morris' Knight Tales Series. First was Sir Lancelot the Great and then Sir Givret the Short. As with the first two editions, the story is witty, fun and a great addition to reluctant readers' libraries. The sentences and words are at the 8 to 10 year-old-level, though occasionally there will be a word that might require a dictionary. The chapters are short and fast to read. The pacing is such that it is difficult to become bored at any one point. This is a fun, short, chapter book boys will love to read. The illustrations are line drawings and enhance the story. The fight scene collage is especially funny. Speaking of fighting, none of the fight scenes are gory or gruesome. The sword fights in the pages of Sir Gawain the True are G-rated. Mothers will love the story for the King's emphasis on courtesy, respect, honoring oaths, and the value of friendships.Note: received from netgalley, courtesy of the publisher

The story of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is one of the greatest of the Arthurian tales. At its core, the story is about the tension between the ideals of courtly love and the baser human instincts. Obviously, this is not a story for young children. Garret Morris takes this classic story and reworks it for young children. In his re-telling, the story morphs into a tale of the importance of being a better listener and more humble. This is a well written book and my eight year old daughter really enjoyed it. For those interested in a children's version closer to the original story, check out Selina Hastings' "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight".

The boys love Gerald Morris. His stories are always full of action and very entertaining. This is no exception. I love the way he instills moral values into his stories. A great twist to the classic King Arthur stories.

Great books for girls or boys. My children laugh out loud and enjoyed them all.

My 9 year old son enjoyed this book

Great story collection. Very humorous for both 9 and 13 year old boy. Font style is super fast easy read. Read as bedtime story and both boys giggling before bed.

Kids loved it.

My 7 year old son said it was great and wants to read the others in the series.. He read it in two sittings.

great book.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!---!!!!!!!!!!!!-!voodoo it was the best book ever read it for global reading challenge at school yah yay yes

From the Back Cover

In Blueprint for Tomorrow, Prakash Nair—one of the world’s leading school designers—provides simple, affordable, and versatile ideas for adapting and redesigning school spaces to support student-centered learning. Richly illustrated throughout, Blueprint for Tomorrow challenges educators to rethink the ways that we teach and work together. “Prakash Nair is the first person to whom I turn for inspiration and guidance about the design of powerful learning environments for children and adults. His message is straightforward: the physical environment in which learning occurs should be designed and constructed around powerful theories of learning, rather than requiring that our theories of learning be adapted to fit into obsolete structures. In his work as an architect, and now in this book, he has transformed our ideas about the relationship between learning and physical space.” — Richard F. Elmore, professor emeritus of educational leadership, Harvard Graduate School of Education “Blueprint for Tomorrow demonstrates why and how school buildings influence pedagogy, curriculum and learning, and provides clear, practical and simple solutions that will enable schools to finally bring teaching and learning into the 21st century.” — Anne Shaw, founder and director, 21st Century Schools “The quest for great schools begins with Prakash Nair’s Blueprint for Tomorrow. This is a great book for someone looking to design functional comfortable spaces for learning. It has some excellent points and goes into the theory behind many of the "blueprints". I do wish it was printed with color though- as color is such a huge part of creating innovative spaces for 21st century learning spaces.

Great book for educators wanting to understand the aspects of a well designed school. I had purchased the Language of school design 2nd edition, and found it a bit confusing as if it was meant for architects rather than educators. This book is more suited to educators.

EXCELLENT!!

Excellent book! Arrived in excellent condition.

Two thumbs up!

I received this book, the package was torn and raggy.

PracticalExcellentWe need to listen to Prakash for the sake of all of our children and their families and their neighborhoods/communities.

Good book, alot of Latin though but it does a good job exposing who the Edomites are today as they have hidden their true identity from the world but this book exposes them. If you are apart of the 12 tribes that have been scattered abroad then this is another must have book in addition to the itinerary of Benjamin Tedula

Save your money

REALLY NO INFORMATION NO EDUCATION A WASTE OF MONEY .I GOT THE SAME FROM THE BACK OF A BREAKFEAST CEREAL

We now know who the Edomites are. The Enemies of YAHUAH

Excellent

Great book for Hebrew Israelites to read , Shelom

Some of it was not translated and you can get the same conclusion by studying the scripture. Worth buying for serious researchers. And the price is good.

Although this item as it is has very good information, It is not a Book, but either a Thesis or an essay. Overall those who are not astute to academia, well they would not comprehend it.

Best translation/interpretation with historical facts, like when each verse was revealed , under what circumstance with context.. this is just not a literal translation of verse by verse.

The best translation and tafseer I have read so far. Absolutely fantastic. The tafseer part font is a bit to tiny.

Basic Arabic quran is the same and does not change. This quran is mostly shia interpretation and translation. It shows how much can change the interpretatuon by different sects of ISLAM. It is excellent. All SHIAS and SUNIS should read this interpretatation. The commentries are are mostly SHIA TWELVERS point of view. So other shias may not agree with every thing. But it is a must read for all SHIAS and Sunis and others for really deep study of Islam. This Quran opensup some misunderstood avenues in Islamic studies.

The quality of the paper is so cheap. This is the Quran we are talking about. It is a sacred book but you treat it with disrespect when you use such paper and font qualities.

If you ever wanted to know the reason and history behind why each aya was revealed then this Qur'an is a great start. I love how the Author organizes the knowledge and specifies different lists to make processing the vasts amount of information easier. This Qur'an has an excellent translation and commentary set up. The translation is line by line and commentary is explained in the footnotes. The first 150 so pages is a detailed introduction about Qur'anic studies, topics, prophets, guide to prayer and Dua Kumayl. Each Surah starts out with the Name of the Surah in transliteration and translation.Prior to beginning to each surah the Author outlines the following:1. Each Surah starts out with the Name of the Surah in transliteration and translation.2. A brief introductory note on the context3. List the Important topics covered in the surah.4. Also a list of sections is provided at the beginning to easily show the reader what each topics are coming in each section. The print is small and the paper is thin, not because it's a cheap quality but in order to properly fit the vast amounts of knowledge into one book. This book is heavy, it's not like a regular Qur'an which can be held in one hand to read. This book will need to be placed on a desk in front of you so you can read it in comfort. The font used is not the normal Uthmani font used in most Qur'ans, this font is Noorehuda font. For someone who is used to the Uthmani font like me, it does take a few moments to get used to this font.Other features include empty pages in the back for your personal notes, Two ribbon bookmarks and an extensive index to search by topic.
