This approach has enlightened and prepared me to inform and raise the polical consciounsness of my radio listeners better and with authority about the bahavior of our politicians on our island, in my Radio Program: "Options & Solutions".

Collin Hay, a British academic (University lecturer) in his book entitled: Why we hate Politics, published in 2007. He makes a detailed study of political disaffection and disengagement in western democracies. The study is based mainly in the decline of voter’s participation in formal political activities in the USA and in Europe.Documented with graphs and tables, as well as empirical evidence observed from decades of data collated, plus the work of other political scientists and commentators.The book reveals that political disaffection and disengagement is a complex issue but can be explained in what the author calls or classifies as follows:- The supply side (Politicians and public authorities): Incapacity to respond to people aspirations- The demand side (Voters and general public): Savvier- The role of political Commentators and scientists).- The de-politicisation of politics: prominence of civil society and independent agencies, globalisation. Collin Hay contends that these are contributing factors. The lack of participation is not solely due to the voters but also to the purveyors of political goods. He cites the diminishing sense of public and civic duty as well as apathy from the voters. Moreover, In this category the author argues that one of the raisons for the disaffection could be due to a more educated, better informed, less deferential, more realistic and therefore, savvy electorate passing on appropriate and critical judgement on institutions of representatives government which are obsolete and need to be reformed.On the supply side he argues that the competition between political parties which he characterises as Marketization of electoral competition in advanced liberal democracies. Consequently, this has resulted in politicians and political parties presenting themselves to voters in terms of personality or image rather than policy.Finally the author attributes the lack of participation to de-politicisation and globalisation; whereby government institutions are turned into independent agencies (quangos in England) as well as the effect of globalisation which takes away the power of a single state and put it in the jurisdiction of an international organisation.The book clearly demonstrates the decline of formal political participation over several decades in liberals western democracies until 2007 however, with the emergence of popular political parties in countries such as Greece with Syriza, Podemos in Spain due to the financial crisis of 2007, the resurgence of the Labour party in the United Kingdom due to its new Leader Jeremy Corbyn aversion for the politics of austerity advocated and adopted by the main liberal countries in the western world; in addition to the USA with the candidacies (2016 Presidential election) of Donald Trump and Bernard Sanders, have showed that people want to participate.What has happened since the publication of the book is that a new political landscape is developing. Yet for all the detail, the book reads like a friendly story of one man's multi-year journey to explore this iconic river.Even if you never intend to paddle the Columbia, this book will provide invaluable information on enjoying the river from various land points.The only reason I rated it a 4 vs. a 5 star is because, given that I'm not a paddler, I have no basis for judging the book on its merits as a paddler's guide.

Wow, the writing and pacing were superior.A great start to a hopeful epic.Sorry boys, this is not an explicit book.SpoilerishKevin said it was an "accident" but they never pressed him on what the accident WAS. I felt that was an oversight.

The pacing and story balance is much, much better here than it was in Cherry Blossom Girls. It managed to grab my attention and keep it, which CBG just couldn't do. It still reads a lot like an action movie, and most of those I find as better sleep aids then entertainment, but it has a solid story and the parts of it pull together well. I can't call it great, there are still some elements of setting building, story building, and story flow that are missing or are poorly implemented, but overall it's worth a read.

...entertaining stories but he also does a good job at bringing humanity to his characters. He really enjoys angst, moral ambiguity and dilemmas, and sex. Yet he still writes with heart.

For all of the flowery description in the blurb, this had quite a lot of office work and not a ton of spies, superheroes, sex, or violence. It's not quite good enough to recommend but not bad enough to angrily rate poorly and warn people away from. Consider it if you have a spare buck and time to kill.

Took a chance on this new series and I found a enjoyable read. The main character has a very unique power that I haven't seen elsewhere and the main character is a very flawed character who tries to become better than he is by the end of the book. Looking forward to the sequel.

It great start, and build up to a new series... The characters, and powers are cool, different, and we are looking forward to how this all going to play out in the future... A very enjoyable read...

Honestly, there's not a lot more that I can say other than Harmon Cooper knocked it out of the park again. Story overall was good, and really worked on flushing out the main character. The only reason I rated this 4 stars instead of 5 was because some of the supporting characters weren't developed enough. Definitely worth picking it up though.

This is a fun start to a superhero series focused on a normal guy living in a world where superpowers exist. He works his way through living with a secret that has caused him to act a bit wild. As he starts to get used by not one but two spies, he starts to regain control over his life and future. Fun story!

In this latest title by Joel Comiskey, he does an effective job of sharing principles taught in the cell church model for two decades. The book is based on Dr. Jim Egli's statistically accurate research on small group health, which I have been following for many years. If you've read any of Dr. Egli's work or gone through his excellent workshop called Upward, Inward, Outward, Forward, you'll see a lot of familiar content here. (As I read through the pre-release version I was given I was pleased to see some of the seminar content in this book. It makes a very good companion piece for any church who decides to host the seminar as a pre-seminar book to read or a follow-up book to work through afterwards.)If you've only read small group texts (vs. cell group resources), you may indeed be surprised by a few things shared. For example, the statistical correlation between increased member-to-member intimacy levels and the group being open to new people. Andy Stanley wrote about how his church's groups are closed to insure intimacy between members could flourish... well, the statistical analysis doesn't prove this out. In fact, it's quite the opposite. Read this book to learn why.One thing brought out in the book that I'm most pleased to see covered in-depth is the area of relational evangelism by group members. Training for relational evangelism is woefully missing in the American church today. Small group ministry will remain a pump of a program that always needs priming and a lot of maintenance and repair if the church isn't growing primarily through relational evangelism (and the relational discipleship that follows). If you read this book--and I hope you do--focus on this area of your small group ministry and see if it's lacking and work on it first. Trust me, when your small group members start reaching friends for Jesus, they will take your discipleship pathway materials and devour them immediately to get ahead of their new believers... and you'll be organically training new group leaders when a member is discipling a friend they brought to Christ.One thing mentioned in the last chapter that I felt needed a lot more emphasis is the centrality of Christ in the small group. When small group members gather in Christ's name and for his sake and let go of all other personal, group, or church agendas, powerful things will happen. And when God's power is flowing through one small group member to another member or a visitor, that's transformational! And when small group members are being powerfully used by God, they get excited enough to invite friends to join and they want to lead a group of their own. While this book just touches on this over-arching principle, you should make sure your groups meet with an expectation that Christ is in their midst and powerful things will happen if they invite his Spirit to move.In summary, I think you'll enjoy reading this book, especially if you're from the small group world where groups are typically seasonal and are used to support the pulpit ministry. The book does an excellent job of describing healthy, growing small groups as a lot more than than a supportive program.

I’ve read several of Dr. Comiskey’s books in order to learn about cell ministry and have found each of them tremendously helpful. His latest book incorporates the extensive research of Jim Egli and provides some helpful insight into making church small groups effective. There are a couple of lessons that we will be putting into practice immediately. First, the authors’ research shows that in order for groups to thrive, there must be a shift from “my group” to “our group.” We’ll be making a concerted effort to empower each member of our small groups to be involved in the ministry of the group. Second, their research showed the value of times of worship. Having already implemented this practice, we’ve seen an immediate change for the better! If you’re involved in ministry and believe in the value of small groups, this is a must-read book for you and your leaders.

Joel Comiskey is an expert in small groups and how they function. He has taken this expertise and poured it into GROUPS THAT THRIVE. In the opening pages, he compares small groups to a rain forest, then writes, “Just like that Costa Rican rain forest, groups that thrive don’t happen by chance or simply because people want their groups to flourish. Thriving communities require a supernatural mix of prayer and Spirit-led anointing that makes a way for everyone to participate, for the healing presence of God, and for vibrant life that blesses others. This book explores how your group can thrive.” (Page 14)I love the research and thought in this book. “The task of describing a thriving small group motivated Jim Egli and me to study the differences between a so-s0, run-of-the-mill meeting and a life-giving group that is ore than a religious meeting. An excellent conclusion to a wonderful series. These books are the perfect mense of sensible, sentimental, supernatural, western. I was searching for a western with better representation than the genre has usually gotten. This series absolutely delivered. I'm kinda heartbroken that this series has gotten so little recognition. It's absolutely worth the time and i'm so glad it was out in the world when I went looking.

Bowen/Dawson's Shadow series never got the success it deserved, but those of us who stuck with it were definitely rewarded. Bowen built a fun and strange world, populated it with fun, flawed, strange characters, and made us care deeply about them. Treason was the bittersweet end the series wanted.

I’ve adored every page of this series, and I’m sad the journey is coming to an end! I had preordered the book but ended up waiting until the weekend to read it so I could binge my way through it in one emotionally exhausting sitting. I’m going to miss this cast of characters!

And so ends The Shadow series. An epic battle, guns blazing, and tears running down my cheeks.Treason of Hawks is one of the better books in the series. We pick up directly where we left off in MoC, with Sam dying on the ground and Rhett driven to save him by any means necessary. Much of the book involves Rhett coming to terms with the result of his actions and learning to live with the newly turned Sam. We see a lot of growth from Rhett as he loses and gains friends, and prepares his people for a mysterious trouble brewing out west. The ending, including the big bad, is set up very well and we even get a taste of the characters' continuing lives in the epilogue.Endings are hard but this one was fitting. Everything about it felt right, even when it was hard. Rhett and his story come full circle in difficult, but elegant, ways. I loved it.And that epilogue though!!!!!

Unlike the description for Book 2, the description for this book doesn't cry out for a correction that would be a spoiler. (I skipped reviewing Book 3.)I continued to enjoy Rhett's desperate determination and fighting spirit, as well as his temperamental imperfections and his struggle with his underlying kind nature. Other well-drawn characters reappear. The plot is about as suspenseful as I can stand (note: I'm a suspense wimp).As with the earlier books, there is a tendency to unnecessary repetition, which is mildly annoying.The author's checking off of multiple diversity boxes is less obtrusive this time around.Some readers may have qualms about where the story ends up. I don't.

Fantastic conclusion to the series.
