I bought this book, I thought it would be funnyBut after I read it, not worth the moneyWith so much material the author could have done betterAnd that is why I wrote this letterThe title is funny, the front cover is greatBut what's inside is a big mistakeI don't recommend it, sorry to saySave your money for a rainy day

The writer mixed up the quotes from different articles and TV appearances. One of the funniest books ever! Worth the money.

First, the cover photo is priceless. The writer uses quotes from Donny Jo to write haiku's and other poems. I appreciate that each quote has the reference noted so I can research the context and situation.

Absolutely breathtaking. One to read to grand kids and family gathered around the fireplace.

As others have said the content (restricted to what Trump has said), is not as good as the cover. But some are quite outstanding as was the first review posted in Trump-speak. Perfect coffee table book!

After reading this chapbook by the President of the United States, I had to give it five stars (Amazon wouldn’t let me give it all it deserves). It is the GREATEST, the MOST IMPORTANT book of poetry this country has produced. I enjoyed it enormously, and the sublime verse has changed not only how I view poetry, but how I see the world.Reading this, I can only hope that Mr. Trump would give up his government job and truly devote himself to his muse, spending his time creating this beautiful, beautiful poetry the world needs so much![To be clear, nothing in this book is “anti-Trump”. Prior to reading this book, I had not heard of the story of Michael Rockefeller, and his tragic fate, so this story was totally new to me, and i was really excited to read it. The story is fascinating because of the mix of cultures involved, Dutch colonial ambitions, geopolitical historical aspects, as well as the nature of the wealthy, powerful Rockefeller family. The story presents prime fodder for great characters and a great mystery. It will not spoil the story to say that the fundamental question is "how did Michael Rockefeller die?". The book tells the story by jumping back and forth from more recent times during the author's research and back to the time of Michael's time on the island, up until he disappeared, and the ensuing large search effort. The jumping back and forth in time makes some parts of the book challenging. In addition, the book is made more challenging by the difficulty I had with place names and people names. There are numerous locations of importance referred to in the book, but there is not a single map - I wish there had been at least one map (several times I used Google maps on my smart phone). With regard to people's names, particularly the names of New Guinea tribe and family names, a family tree and/or timeline of relatives would have helped the understanding, and therefore the enjoyment of reading. Coupled with the disjointed time structure, the lack of maps and challenges with place/people names/relations, this book is not as good as it could have been. However, I still enjoyed it, and glad I read it, because the coincidence of peoples in New Guinea at this time in history is really interesting. Regarding the question of Michael's actual fate, I left the book no more convinced of any proposed way in which he could have died. I will not say more on this, so I don't spoil it for others - you'll have to make up your own mind.

Thanks to the daily kindle specials I'm offered, I have read many books I wouldn't have searched for. Savage Harvest was a pleasant surprise. There are many good reviews so I won't be repetitive.There IS a map of the villages and I don't see how this book could be written without going back and forth in time. I certainly didn't find it tedious. Quite the contrary, I couldn't put it down. This kindle version doesn't have the option to find out what percentage of the book has been read/remains so I kept going as I thought I must be nearing the end...and it's now 11 am.I'll be in NYC in a couple of months and I'll have to visit the Museum of Primitive Art at MOMA. I read this on an iPad but will have it on my iPhone 6+ so will be able to refer to the book while there. This is an exciting prospect. To actually SEE the artifacts that Michael Rockefeller acquired and see his photographs will be a big thrill. I hope his journals will also be on display.The cover made me think I was getting a book written decades ago yet the book was published in 2014 and Hoffman's trips were in 2012. It was interesting to see that "ramen" is now a major part of their diet. And the references to John who lives between two villages and works elsewhere for money and has adopted a more modern lifestyle (including satellite TV and watches CNN and BBC) was fascinating.Quite poignant was the author's realization that despite the really primitive conditions he felt a sense of kinship and belonging to a community. He talks about how his father left behind his Orthodox Jewish upbringing and Carl and his sister grew up in a small insular household among families with numerous children.If you like non-fiction, travel narratives, and biographies/memoirs genres, then this has it all. Highly recommend.

Hoffman manages to come up with as close to a clear conclusion on the death of Rockefeller as can be made, half a century after others had failed to do so. His patient immersion in Asmat culture yields dividends when he gets the descendants of those who probably ritually killed Rockefeller to almost admit it.The book is particularly fascinating in the way it interweaves the history, politics, and culture of the time, to show how these all converge on an eager, bright, but unfortunate young man. For example, how the "domino theory" of Asian communism led President Kennedy to try to placate Sukarno and oppose the Dutch. How Dutch colonialists, trying to show that the Netherlands were in control of Papua, led them to murder Asmat, which in turn led the Asmat to take revenge on hapless Rockefeller.The book portrays the Asmat culture to us Westerners in a way that helps to understand their world view. I have visited other remote clans in Papua New Guinea and have some understanding of this. Hoffman gets you deep into these natives' culture.I fault Hoffman for his annoying jumping around in time, backwards and forwards over and over. Very frustrating.And the paperback deserves a more attractive cover!A brilliant study. A compelling read.

This book is a thorough investigation into the disappearance of Michael Rockefeller in New Guinea in the 1960's. But much more than that it is a journey into the mind set of the local people and how they dealt with and deal with their transformation from a closely held culture where logical relations between spirits and humans buttress their way of life into a "modern" culture overlain with government, religion, and lifestyles replete with unsatisfactory contradictions. The author seeks not to judge, but to explain. Starting with a murder mystery he ends up understanding a mind set that can include headhunting and cannibalism.

It was hard to stomach the initial descriptions of the tribal rites, at first. Then, the realization of modern factual events intersecting with my own travels in that geographical vicinity made Hoffman's quest more personal. I even had to check my high school yearbook for my Dutch Indonesian boyfriend's picture to "ground" myself into Hoffman's story. Grossly riveting at times, the mystery of Rockefeller's disappearance came to a somewhat satisfying conclusion.

It covers the most famous balls (aka parties) from Paul .Poiret's 'two thousand and one night's ball,' Truman Capote's 'Black and White' Ball in the 1960's and some of the later and earlier less know parties.The book steps back in time to a period where people spent weeks preparing for parties and showed up in costumes that rival any modern day opera. It is filled with inspiration for designers and people interested in that period in time. The book is very large - more of a 'coffee-table' size. It comes in a cardboard pocket.The only reason my rating is not 5 stars is that ,when I placed my order for this book - probably because of the weight- I received a few copies with crushed sides, before I finally got a 'clean' copy. The book is a definite 5 stars plus, the packaging would be 2 stars less.If you love disappearing into a lost time of beauty and imagination, this is the book for you.

Fun, breezy read, aimed at an adolescent audience and still totally pleasing. Part of the pleasure was that it takes place completely in the skydiving world - not just the drop zone, but the complete world of a skydiver. As an old time, longtime skydiver myself, I loved the nostalgia of the simpler old days at a family-run drop zone, many of which still exist today. As a retired high-school teacher, I also found the character drama believable and beautifully captured. Read thru the goggles of my 45 years in this sport, I highly recommend Freefall Summer as an easy reading pleasure to all my skydiving family. Blue Skies!!

I liked it and I related to the realistic skydiving info. My only complaint was that I was hoping to let my 4th graders read it but the "sexual scenes" and innuendo would be inappropriate. Probably more of an early high school book, which is too bad, since a 10-12-year old could easily read this...

That’s a first for me in the few years that I’ve been reading-for-reviews, and perhaps the most honest indication I can give that I loved and admired this book.I really liked Clancy. She’s a high school junior that works hard at school, gets great grades and has clear college plans that she’s working toward both academically and financially. Clancy spends her weekends and summers working hard at the DZ – her dad’s skydiving school - to earn enough money to go away to college. But despite being obviously clever and capable she’s been pigeonholed by both her caring, if wildly overprotective dad and her boyfriend as a girl who needs protecting. And it’s driving her crazy. FREEFALL SUMMER is the story of how Clancy claims her voice.I love reading fiction that also contains authentic facts whether it’s history, science, art, sport… FREEFALL SUMMER has that in spades. I found the details about skydiving, from the equipment to the people who jump, were fantastic (even though I learned that my one static-line jump while in college was kind of cliché).This was so tightly written that while I was reading the climax scene a friend turned to me and asked if I was all right. Apparently I was so wound up in the scene that I was moaning.

Noteworthy experiences while reading this book: If you wanted to learn about Skydiving in story form this is the book you should be reading! I found this a very exciting and interesting premise.Do I Recommend this book? If you don't want to learn about skydiving this one may not be for you. A lot of the book talks about it.Notes and Opinions: This was an interwoven story about skydiving and this one is set in Missouri which was a nice change of pace. I really enjoyed that Clancy's dad was actually in the picture, so many of these young adult books have absent parents that you wonder (me being a mom and an adult) why children services haven't busted down their doors. So even though Clancy's dad was WAY overprotective it was still a nice change of pace.This was a very quick read with very nice pacing. I think the author did a wonderful job with all of the terminologies with the skydiving as well as with each of the characters. I loved meeting all of the people in the group as well as Clancy. Although with Clancy wanting freedom from her dad I think she went about it in a horrible way. Especially if things would have gone horribly wrong.This story is one on the lighter side of things and I think would be a great read since school is just now starting for a lot of kids. This is one that you could speed through or take your time with.This book also had a great story for those who are getting ready to graduate that you are in charge of your life. Your almost an adult and well your parents won't be there forever to tell you what to do. You need to start thinking on your own and take charge and owning up to your mistakes and learning to deal with bad and good choices no matter how they end up.Go Into This One Knowing: Growing Up, Over Protective Parents, Skydiving

An excellent book that thoroughly explains how to use the GNU Compiler Collection for C and C++. This is an excellent book for people new to the GNU software-creation tools as well as for people who want to learn more about how the various libraries, functions, and header files work and connect properly during the compilation and linking steps. The author uses simple examples to illustrate important points. (Unfortunately, too many authors want to show off their programming "tricks," rather than help readers understand a topic.)I'm a recent buyer and already have gone through this book. It's an important part of my programming-book library. Bravo, Brian Gough. Nice work.

Coverage is adequate for the compilers, but needs updating. The biggest disappointment is that there is virtually no coverage of the AS assembler and the linker/loader. While it might be true that mainstream GNU/Linux users are not using assembly language much, there are those of us out here that are using it, especially those of us working on embedded Linux projects. For example, the use of Raspberry Pi has exploded. The authors need to consider doing a long over-due update to this very valuable Linux programming reference book, and to include some detailed coverage of the assembler tool chain.

This is a great little introduction to the excellent GCC compilers (GNU Compiler Collection). It shows the use of GCC to compile single files, multiple files to be linked, the use of the most common "flags" or options to be used in compiling, and gives users the know-how to confidently develop their own programs, whether they are middle-school enthusiasts, college computer science students learning to use GCC, or working adults with a wish to develop programming skills and their own applications. GCC (and the other compilers in the set, g++, gfortran, etc) is a large program with many options, and it's worth knowing that as it's developed some options are eliminated and others are added. All those options could be useful for specialized developers, and some no doubt are made for those who develop GCC itself. But this book is an excellent introduction that gets you going. I would suggest another book to go with it, on GNU Make, which automates compiling to produce a nontrivial program. I'd further recommend a book introducing GNU autotools, like automake and autoconfigure. GCC plus these tools equip you to do some serious programming.

I have been programming in C++ for several years now. I've been relying heavily on IDE's and build systems that have been already in place, winging it when I had to generate a new make file or compile a new program. If you're like me and want to get a better foundation on the way that GCC handles bringing a program from source code to an executable, this is your guide. This book, though fairly slim, answered a question I've had for quite some time: Why? There are many nuances which aren't apparent by perusing a Makefile. I definitely recommend this before reading up on make.

I started to dig deeply into C and C++ for about a year ago, and I am only sorry I didn't buy this book sooner. You don't even need to be a programmer to appreciate this compact introduction. If you are used to download source code and do the usual ./configure; make; make install and you actually want to know a bit more about the stuff that is flying across your screen you should invest a few hours in reeding this book.This book, together with "Autotools" (No Starch Press), are the two best resources to give your compiling and building a flying start.

If you're at all like me and have used GCC and makefiles but never really took the time to learn them, this book is for you. I was hoping for a basic introduction to the world of GCC and basic makefiles and what I found did not disappoint. The author starts out assuming you know nothing about GCC and works efficiently building up the concepts until introducing a basic makefile in the first few chapters. I couldn't have asked for a better starting guide to the concepts of a GCC build system and the cross compiling. This is a short but easily digestible read, quick to reference and concise. If you're looking for more depth into GCC or makefiles take a look at some other resource (the author often mentions and has a section dedicated to further resources). But, for wrapping your head around the concepts I couldn't have asked for a better book.

Great book. Very succinct and to the point. I find myself coming back to it every few weeks when I am having issues with gcc. It is nice that there are troubleshooting sections. Granted they're really short, but that just kind of hammers in the point that there isn't THAT much that can go wrong with gcc.

When I had to develop C/C++ code in a production environment in the GCC platform, I was highly confused about the usage of the compiler. I tried searching the web for resources only to go into a hollow dark spiral without getting any closer to clarity. I had resorted to hacking my way through for a while. Then I found this book on the net. This is the most clear explanation of using the GCC to compile C/C++ programs. It clearly explains you what is going on without getting into the real depths. At the same time it is not some superficial exposition. It tells you how and why. Also there are some good suggestions for debugging. Although this copy is on the Internet, I planned to buy and it keep it as a reference. This is a small book which has been very clearly written specifically to address the usage of GCC. It is an elaborate and lucid man page. I would highly recommend this book without any reservations.

I purchased this book to get quickly up to speed on Microsoft Project. Unfortunately, this book was of little help. Text gets bogged down in details that no beginner would ever use (or could easily figure out by themselves), and the whole text is not explained or organized very well. For instance, the most basic need for a Project manager is to compare Project expenditures against a predetermined budget - that's how every project I know ever gets approved. And yet, where is this budget feature? Not even in the book! I had to go online and watch a few youtube videos to see how to do it (and it's not very easy by the way, thank you Microsoft). In addition to fixing this, would suggest that subsequent versions (or better yet, an entirely new edition), includes a fast-track section for getting going, and perhaps some accompanying basic project that you can set up as you read along, to enhance learning.Overall - I would not recommend this book to anyone at the moment.

Easy to look up specific bits of information. The book is all inclusive & well written. I knew MSP, but an older (2003) version. The upgrades to 2018 are terrific. Yes, this book is for 2016, but there were no inherent changes from 16 to 18. This book had better reviews, so I went with it & it serves its purpose very well.I'd recommend it for a condensed, 'easy to figure out the program' guide. I will say, one must have some knowledge of MSP, or be very computer savy to understand & apply a lot of the terminology.

Very easy to read and follow along. I love these series of books for the way they convey very technical information in an easy to read format with real examples.

The author really knows project management, so unlike other software guide, it doesn't just explain how to use the software, but also implement the project manage concept into it.

We actually moved from Project to Planner. Project is for larger project, where planner is more of an organized postit. I've always enjoyed the dummies series.

It gives you enough information to do the basics. It's perfect for those that only need to do the simpler things or edit existing schedules.
