An excellent book that thoroughly explains how to use the GNU Compiler Collection for C and C++. This is an excellent book for people new to the GNU software-creation tools as well as for people who want to learn more about how the various libraries, functions, and header files work and connect properly during the compilation and linking steps. The author uses simple examples to illustrate important points. (Unfortunately, too many authors want to show off their programming "tricks," rather than help readers understand a topic.)I'm a recent buyer and already have gone through this book. It's an important part of my programming-book library. Bravo, Brian Gough. Nice work.

Coverage is adequate for the compilers, but needs updating. The biggest disappointment is that there is virtually no coverage of the AS assembler and the linker/loader. While it might be true that mainstream GNU/Linux users are not using assembly language much, there are those of us out here that are using it, especially those of us working on embedded Linux projects. For example, the use of Raspberry Pi has exploded. The authors need to consider doing a long over-due update to this very valuable Linux programming reference book, and to include some detailed coverage of the assembler tool chain.

This is a great little introduction to the excellent GCC compilers (GNU Compiler Collection). It shows the use of GCC to compile single files, multiple files to be linked, the use of the most common "flags" or options to be used in compiling, and gives users the know-how to confidently develop their own programs, whether they are middle-school enthusiasts, college computer science students learning to use GCC, or working adults with a wish to develop programming skills and their own applications. GCC (and the other compilers in the set, g++, gfortran, etc) is a large program with many options, and it's worth knowing that as it's developed some options are eliminated and others are added. All those options could be useful for specialized developers, and some no doubt are made for those who develop GCC itself. But this book is an excellent introduction that gets you going. I would suggest another book to go with it, on GNU Make, which automates compiling to produce a nontrivial program. I'd further recommend a book introducing GNU autotools, like automake and autoconfigure. GCC plus these tools equip you to do some serious programming.

I have been programming in C++ for several years now. I've been relying heavily on IDE's and build systems that have been already in place, winging it when I had to generate a new make file or compile a new program. If you're like me and want to get a better foundation on the way that GCC handles bringing a program from source code to an executable, this is your guide. This book, though fairly slim, answered a question I've had for quite some time: Why? There are many nuances which aren't apparent by perusing a Makefile. I definitely recommend this before reading up on make.

I started to dig deeply into C and C++ for about a year ago, and I am only sorry I didn't buy this book sooner. You don't even need to be a programmer to appreciate this compact introduction. If you are used to download source code and do the usual ./configure; make; make install and you actually want to know a bit more about the stuff that is flying across your screen you should invest a few hours in reeding this book.This book, together with "Autotools" (No Starch Press), are the two best resources to give your compiling and building a flying start.

If you're at all like me and have used GCC and makefiles but never really took the time to learn them, this book is for you. I was hoping for a basic introduction to the world of GCC and basic makefiles and what I found did not disappoint. The author starts out assuming you know nothing about GCC and works efficiently building up the concepts until introducing a basic makefile in the first few chapters. I couldn't have asked for a better starting guide to the concepts of a GCC build system and the cross compiling. This is a short but easily digestible read, quick to reference and concise. If you're looking for more depth into GCC or makefiles take a look at some other resource (the author often mentions and has a section dedicated to further resources). But, for wrapping your head around the concepts I couldn't have asked for a better book.

Great book. Very succinct and to the point. I find myself coming back to it every few weeks when I am having issues with gcc. It is nice that there are troubleshooting sections. Granted they're really short, but that just kind of hammers in the point that there isn't THAT much that can go wrong with gcc.

When I had to develop C/C++ code in a production environment in the GCC platform, I was highly confused about the usage of the compiler. I tried searching the web for resources only to go into a hollow dark spiral without getting any closer to clarity. I had resorted to hacking my way through for a while. Then I found this book on the net. This is the most clear explanation of using the GCC to compile C/C++ programs. It clearly explains you what is going on without getting into the real depths. At the same time it is not some superficial exposition. It tells you how and why. Also there are some good suggestions for debugging. Although this copy is on the Internet, I planned to buy and it keep it as a reference. This is a small book which has been very clearly written specifically to address the usage of GCC. It is an elaborate and lucid man page. I would highly recommend this book without any reservations.

I purchased this book to get quickly up to speed on Microsoft Project. Unfortunately, this book was of little help. Text gets bogged down in details that no beginner would ever use (or could easily figure out by themselves), and the whole text is not explained or organized very well. For instance, the most basic need for a Project manager is to compare Project expenditures against a predetermined budget - that's how every project I know ever gets approved. And yet, where is this budget feature? Not even in the book! I had to go online and watch a few youtube videos to see how to do it (and it's not very easy by the way, thank you Microsoft). In addition to fixing this, would suggest that subsequent versions (or better yet, an entirely new edition), includes a fast-track section for getting going, and perhaps some accompanying basic project that you can set up as you read along, to enhance learning.Overall - I would not recommend this book to anyone at the moment.

Easy to look up specific bits of information. The book is all inclusive & well written. I knew MSP, but an older (2003) version. The upgrades to 2018 are terrific. Yes, this book is for 2016, but there were no inherent changes from 16 to 18. This book had better reviews, so I went with it & it serves its purpose very well.I'd recommend it for a condensed, 'easy to figure out the program' guide. I will say, one must have some knowledge of MSP, or be very computer savy to understand & apply a lot of the terminology.

Very easy to read and follow along. I love these series of books for the way they convey very technical information in an easy to read format with real examples.

The author really knows project management, so unlike other software guide, it doesn't just explain how to use the software, but also implement the project manage concept into it.

Excellent resource. Got me through job and I'd never used Project before.

We actually moved from Project to Planner. Project is for larger project, where planner is more of an organized postit. I've always enjoyed the dummies series.

It gives you enough information to do the basics. It's perfect for those that only need to do the simpler things or edit existing schedules.

Small-Plot, High Yield Gardening is THE book to buy for first-time or beginning gardeners, or experienced gardeners frustrated by bad results. Forget about the lush photographs of vegetables and gardens in other books, and even worse, the "gardening" books that give you recipes for all the crops they don't teach you how to grow, and buy this book instead. Gilbertie and Sheehan explain the work and wonders of gardening, all in a step-by-step, manageable, no-nonsense way that is both instructive and inspiring, without all the fluff or unhelpful nonsense of other books. They clearly explain how to make a garden in the space that you have and how not to overdo it in the first few years. I don't want to say that this book changed my life, but in fact it did. I went from not being a gardener, to being one -- all because of what I learned through this book. Worth every penny!

I checked this book out of my local library and after renewing it once and making copies of several pages in the book, decided to purchase this amazing book. Sal Gilbertie really speaks to beginner and advanced gardeners. He's so easy to follow and really breaks down gardening. He has amazing tips for each crop as well!

Looking forward to really getting into this book come spring. Have a nice raised garden, and plan to use some of the suggestions made. The book is well laid out and looks easy and interesting to use.

Parents who systematically fabricate illnesses in their children or intentionally make their children gravely ill are said to suffer from Munchausen by Proxy syndrome (MBPS). It is a form of child abuse that can lead to death or serious physical or psychological damage to the child, either through outright harm or as a result of painful tests and procedures performed by doctors trying to diagnose the child's "illness". Unlike other types of child abuse - where signs of disruption in the parent-child relationship are apparent, and in which men are more likely the perpetrators - the vast majority of Munchausen by Proxy abusers are mothers who appear to all the world to be wonderful, concerned parents. This book offers the first comprehensive, detailed examination of Munchausen by Proxy syndrome. Written by leading authorities, it covers all known clinical, medical, psychological, social, and legal aspects of the disorder, including detection, dynamics, treatment, and clinical management. Based on their own experiences evaluating and treating these patients, the authors present an innovative theory of the disorder as a form of imposturing. By posing as a good mother, the MBPS patient establishes a perverse relationship with the child's doctors. The apparently loved infant serves as an object to regulate this relationship. This book has provided the best over-all understanding of the MBP disorder. It delves into not only the extreme (rare cases) of when mother's poison their infants which cause life threatening chronic illness but the book also covers lesser forms of MBP. Right off the bat the authors discuss MBP as a spectrum and distinguish the Munchausen Disorder from Munchausen by Proxy, from there it continues to look at the various cases of how mother's harm their children and provides a few theories as to the psychology of why, or how this disorder is created. The authors are very careful to state that there is currently not enough data to provide concrete evidence, but the theories they provide do appear to be logical.My only criticism about the book is that it frequently over looks the empathic or compassionate element when discussing survivors of MBP. I would not recommend this book for someone trying to understand MBP disorder from a survivors perspective. This is not written with survivors in mind and the language tends to come across as very apathetic. I realize this book is not written as a self-help book, but considering that there are no current self-help books for survivors of MBP, I thought it was worth mentioning.

Hurting for Love reads like a textbook, but if the reader has enough patience they can learn much. Packed with information and loaded with research to back it up, Hurting for Love is required reading for anyone in the medical or legal field.

Helped alot with my researc h I had to do for a class. I then donated it to the library where I attend school so other student could also use it.

I wrote a review (below) January 20, 2001. Now, in 2014, I am in my mid-60's. Looking back....I can still tell you this book is right on! Munchausen is now an accepted reality. Thank God! For me, years ago, seeing Judith Libow on TV with Diane Sawyer was mind-blowing. Then reading the book was life changing. My "mother" was the sweetheart of the neighborhood. Petite and sweet. Pretty. Kind. Nice. Such a GOOD mother! No one would have believed me! Who would I tell? This book gave me an internal "voice". I didn't want/need to share it with anybody else. I was just so relieved to know what I felt was true. She was cold. She was cruel. She was mean. She said things to me that were strange. She did things. She lied. This book brought memories from my past. To see it in print and know it was not just me was so amazing. Thank you for this book! Any one who wants to understand this syndrome should read this book. My old copy is highlighted on all the lines that were my childhood! Thank you for writing this book. Those who don't believe it are fools.

As an Asian-American woman who has the last name Sanders and a mother who grappled with suicide and who also went to Taiwan recently... I randomly learned about this book from a Buzzfeed article and was like uhhh yeah I need to buy this like yesterday!What I liked: This was a great debut by a very promising author and the premise was intriguing to say the least. I stayed up until 1am reading it and finished it the next day, and will be loaning my copy to a couple of friends and family members. I thought the writing was overall strong and clear and engaging. The portrayal of depression and suicide and the stigma that surrounds mental health, especially in Asian-American families, is realistic. I am also a sucker for magical realism.What I am torn on: Eastern mythicism is kind of the backbone of this novel, which is not something I generally love because this is a trope that has been done to death by orientalist authors like Amy Tan, and can often contribute to building an unhealthy exploitative aura of fabricated mystery around people from Asia, painting them as mysterious, superstitious 'others' rather than highlighting our similarities and bridging cultural divides. However, I will say that pretty much all of the religious and cultural elements mentioned in this novel are portrayed accurately, and the perspective of the protagonist does read to be from someone who is genuinely trying to understand the local culture.What I didn't like: The main character's best friend/love interest, Axel, is a boring and uncompelling character; he is basically a male version of her. Yet he is featured prominently in the novel and there is no way to escape him because even when he is not present, her streams of consciousness keep turning to him. The dialogue in general was stilted and unrealistic, and not reflective of how teenagers actually speak. (The characters mostly speak in cliched language reminiscent of the 90s, along the lines of: "Ugh, mo-om!" I sighed, rolling my eyes. "You're being totally annoying!")

And maybe he’d see how my mother had sliced up everything else.”This is one of the most beautiful books I’ve ever read in my entire life. It’s powerful, moving, poignant, lyrical, important, and touched me beyond words. From the discussion about mental health and the stigmas we still have in 2018 (especially in Asian cultures), to the true portrayal of grief, to the heartbreaking truth about depression, to the realistic depiction of what it means to be not only biracial but to be white passing, to the discovery of your identity. The Astonishing Color of After is a book I will cherish for the rest of my life.“I would’ve carved out my heart and brain and given them to her just so she could feel right again.”But this is a very heavy book, so big trigger and content warnings for suicide, depression, loss of a loved one, depiction of blood, very intense suicidal thoughts, abandonment, racial slurs/remarks, and mention of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). But if you’re in the right state of mind, I recommend this book with my whole heart and soul. This will easily make my best of 2018 list.The Astonishing Color of After is a story about a girl who has just realized that her mother has committed suicide. This book follows her suffering with the loss of her mother, who she is also seeing in the shape of a bird. This bird has convinced our main character, Leigh, to travel to Taiwan, because there is something there that her mother wants her to remember.“My mother is a bird. This isn’t like some William Faulkner stream-of-consciousness metaphorical crap. My mother. Is literally. A bird.”➽ Mental Health -This is a book about mental health and how depression impacts everyone around the person who is living with it. In the acknowledgements, Emily X.R. Pan states that she was inspired to finish this book after someone close to her took their own life. And I’m not going to say that her experience, or my experience, are the only experiences, but the depiction of depression in this book sends a chill up my spine because it feels so real and accurate.This book discusses how people always think they could have saved the person who ended their life. Or how pills and medications are the fix that depressed people need. Sometimes people believe in other, terrible, treatments that will cure depression, no matter what it costs that person. Depression is an illness, just like anything else. It can come once, it can come and go, and it can come and never leave. But depression is real, and it can be hard, really hard, and it’s not something that’s an “easy fix”, and it’s not something that we should keep stigmatizing and pretending that it’s not a real illness. And this book respectfully and beautiful depicts that. And there is absolutely no suicide shaming in this book.“Long before doctors put a label on her condition and offered slips of paper bearing the multisyllabic names of pharmaceuticals. Long before my father started leaving on his work trips. Long before everything: She was already hurting.”➽ Grief -The start of this book was really heavy and hard to read for me. When Leigh discovers what her mother did my heart felt like it was being shredded. But seeing her mother live with her own grief shredded my soul. Depression, loss, and grief are highlighted themes through this entire book, and they are so real and so important and I have no words to express how much they meant to me that they were huge components of this YA story.“In the beginning, that mother-shaped hole was made of blood. Dark and sticky, soaked to the roots of the carpet.”➽ Discovery -Ultimately, this is a book about Leigh discovering her self in every sense of the word. From discovering her sexuality, to discovering her creativity, to trying to figure out what she wants to do with her life. To also living with a parent that is depressed, to sharing a life with a parent who is never home. To finally discovering her culture that has been somewhat hidden from her for her entire life. Also, this book is the biggest love letter to the healing power of art.“Maybe that’s where all the other colors are hiding—in a dimension of the world we just can’t see, between our sky and the rest of the universe.”➽ Being Biracial -I feel like this is something I never talk about because I feel shame because of all the privileges I’ve received my entire life from being so very white passing, but apparently 2018 is the year I bring up my Filipino heritage in every review I write. I’m a lot more white passing than Leigh, but the things she deals with and feels, especially when she travels to Taiwan, is something so real and something I’ve never had depicted in a book before. From my light hair and eyes, to my barely basic understanding of Tagalog, this book was the book I’ve been searching for my entire life. I have no word combination for how seen I felt in the book. (Also the love interest is half Filipino, and was the cutest little cinnamon role who warmed my heart throughout the book!)“I suck in a deep breath and quicken my steps to press closer to my grandmother. Her proximity feels like a shield. If only I didn’t stand out so obviously with my lighter eyes, with my lighter hair and its streak of green. If only I had been raised more Taiwanese, and could somehow prove to these people that I belong here.”➽ Identity -But seeing Leigh claim back her identity is something so beautiful that I don’t even have words for. This story is crafted and woven so exceptionally between different pasts and her present, and seeing Leigh come into her own is something I can’t possibly put into words.“We try so hard to make these little time capsules. Memories strung up just so, like holiday lights, casting the perfect glow in the perfect tones. But that picking and choosing what to look at, what to put on display—that’s not the true nature of remembering.”Overall, I loved this (if you couldn’t tell)! This, again, is a story that I will carry inside of my heart for the rest of my life. Emily X.R. Pan has crafted something that is so raw, but so magical. Plus, this is one of the most impressive debuts that I’ve ever read in my entire life. I recommend this with my entire heart and soul.

Do you like or own a school uniform or sailor suite? Answer yes any of these question this book may be for you. Answer yes to all these questions you need this book. From Sailor Moon to Kill Bill, the Japanese Girl in her school uniform is ubiquitous and the center of attention. In Japan there are stores dedicated to "fake" school uniforms for when one's real uniform is not cool enough. (I have two "fake" uniforms I wear and have a sailor suit on order.) The book provides context and the backstory of the Japanese School Girl icon. The eight chapters cover the presentation of Japanese girls in their uniform, in music, in shopping, in print media, in art, in games, and of course in anime and manga. Every page includes a photo or drawing of people and/or events in current Japanese culture. This is fun and informative read. it includes a bibliography and index. The book is printed in Japan with a soft cover. Like most books made in Japan it includes a dust cover and the cover is two thick papers that are glued together at the edges. I enjoyed this book and enjoying reading it for a third time.

I really enjoyed this book, and think it makes a good compliment to Patrick Macias' Japanese Schoolgirl Inferno: Tokyo Teen Fashion Subculture Handbook (reading one made me feel like I understood the other a bit better).The main negating factor for me is that I want to know more about the various topics, as this is a part of Japanese pop culture I am quite interested in (which maybe sounds kind of creepy, but I promise you it isn't, haha).I don't really want to detract stars for that though because I personally feel that:1) there might not be that much more info on the topic2) if there is more info, it may not be interesting enough to put in the book (being appealing only to those who are super interested)3) some of it may not translate over well (to explain one thing, you have to explain all this other stuff and maybe it's hard to summarize).I trust what Ashcraft wrote pretty well; from what I've seen he's been writing about this kind of thing for some time, and in my opinion he does it well (examples: his work with Wired, Kotaku). So I'd say he's credible.Overall, for me it was a neat look into the impact and influence that the symbol of the Japanese schoolgirl has. Being a young American woman who enjoys Japanese fashion, the "Material Girls" section was my favorite part, especially learning about the history of Egg magazine and how companies seem to have a more direct relationship with their young customers (in contrast to here, where it seems to be mostly top>down). It might not be to everyone's tastes though, so I suggest giving a quick flip-through before purchase.

I was already completely satisfied with the original volume; this full-colour update is well worth a look! Written in an approachable style, Ashcraft covers many different aspects of Japanese culture, from anime to J-pop. While those might be the "expected" categories, there's also a smattering of history and the evolution of various trends. The author himself remarks on the fact that writing a book about Japanese schoolgirls was met with "coy assumptions that were clearly a carryover of stereotype and fantasy". Indeed, to dismiss this book based upon those sorts of assumptions would be a mistake--it is well written and informative, a worthy addition to the overall library surrounding Japan's modern culture. Based upon this and his other title, I am eagerly awaiting Ashcraft's next book.

Interesting light reading. Probably most people that buy this book have some idea about the power of the Japanese School Girl in anime/manga and movies but if you don't, give it a try.I wish the illustrations were in a higher res. Zooming in to find a pixulated picture is disappointing.

Cute & the book is smaller than expected, but I don't care about that. :) the pages are all in color! Fun to read!

This is like reading a really long magazine article on Japanese schoolgirl uniforms. Plenty of pictures to show examples, colorful and informative just enough so that you'll keep interested and understand what he's talking about but not too deep that you'll get lost in references. Fun read all in all.

This book puts a lot of things in perspective it may be a little dated but the current world wide trend for manga and anime this is a great start and well worth the read. Once you read this book you will have an appreciation as to what this culture is and stands for dont get to deep just accept it and have fun is the base of there life. Thanks

I bought this book expecting to find some semi-soft-porn describing the hot sex practices of young girls. What I got instead was a history book so fascinating that I read it all the way through from cover to cover. I could not put it down. It described the amazing story of how the typical Japanese school girl a generation ago was shy and retiring and nobody noticed her or cared about her but now, like Pinky and the Brain, they have taken over the world. How did they do this? How did they come to dictate fashion trends and designs? Why is the whole world trying to find out what the Japanese Schoolgirl is thinking, whereas previously they doubted that she had any thoughts at all? Why has the Japanese schoolgirl uniform reached the height of fashion? Why do Japanese women nowadays dress in schoolgirl uniforms even though they are no longer in school.I was disturbed however by the chapter on "Suicide Circle" or "Suicide Clubs". The thought that Japanese schoolgirls might commit suicide because it is fashionable to do so is disturbing. It is not clear whether this was reality or just an exploitation movie. It is known than any time a suicide is publicized there are always copy-cat suicides. The fact that somebody would make a movie about this is upsetting. Sam Sloan
