Me encantan los libros de Isabel Allende. Se me antoja leerlos hasta terminarlos y luego quiero saber qué pasa con los personajes después. Me fascina su uso del lenguaje y las historias originales que cuenta. Me gusta buscar ciertos aspectos autobiográficos de Isabel contenidos en todos sus libros. Aunque no tengo en gusto de conocerla personalmente, he leído suficiente cantidad de sus libros para reconocer ciertos elementos, como cuando menciona una perrita que se llama Olivia en este libro. Me gustaría que hiciera más series de libros donde podríamos seguir leyendo algo sobre el romance incipiente entre Lucía y Richard o el futuro de Evelyn. Me da mucho gusto que los personajes femeninos siempre tienen un espíritu de lucha y de aventura y que a pesar de la historia de Evelyn, por ejemplo, y los traumas que vivió en Guatemala, ella es una persona emprendedora de cierta forma y alguien con mucho amor y ternura por dentro. Espero ansiosamente el siguiente libro de la gran escritora, Isabel Allende.

Una novela actual, genial tal cual es Isabel Allende, de pronto me parece que será mi favorita por mucho. Doy gracias infinitas a Dios que al nombrar los países centroamericanos no tuvo que nombrar el mío: Costa Rica, aunque también tengamos problemas, pero no TAN grandes.Mañana mismo empiezo de nuevo a leerla y espero el próximo 8 de enero para ver con qué nos sorprende la autora. Le sugiero venir a mi patria, la vea con esos increíbles ojos de su alma, y luego nos escriba. Gracias por esta novela.

Como todo lo de Isabel Allende, una historia que cautiva desde el primer momento. He estado las 6 ultimas horas encantadas con este libro q no me ha dejado mas opcion q leerlo todo de una vez. Es una historia q narra la cruda realidad que infelizmente vivimos hoy en dia. He llorado increiblemente, el relato toca fibras muy profundas, pero al mismo tiempo me he reido, Isabel como siempre con su encanto unico, gracias!!! Lo estaba esperando ansiosamente (y no soy fanatica pero para nada de leer en version digital pero no podia esperar hasta octubre, y por supuesto q cuando salga en hard copy voy directo a comprarlo)

Mr. Echo-Hawk presents in an interesting and tragic read the obstacles placed on Native-Americans throughout American history by the courts of law, military treaties, and other hurldes that Native-Americans faced, sometimes were victorious, but often than naught defeated due to the prejudices by "white" courts, and violations of treaties between the tribes and the U.S. Military. Mr. Echo-Hawk tells the history of the legal issues and cases that led to the United Nations 2007 Declarations on the Right of Indigenous Peoples and how in 2010 it ushered in a new era of Native American law and policy. Mr. Echo-Hawk presents his case in a well-researched and thought provoking way that demands that Native-Americans still have the legal right to pursue in a court of law corrections to past injustices that were committed upon whole tribes of Native Americans and other Indigenous peoples (Hawaiians, Alaskans).The fascinating history of how the Native-Americans were once numerous in North America were brought to a verge of extinction in a short-time span of about 300 years due to greedy land-grab, disease, and active destruction of food resources. The Native-Americans had to endure such injustices and when they tried to speak out or defend themselves, they were crushed militarily, and in courts of law. History over time has come to recognize such injustices, while governments do not. Especially, in the case of the United States, others like Mr. Echo-Hawk were stubborn enough and passionate enough to have their voices heard and be recognized. I admire Mr. Echo-Hawk, not only does he speak with passion, but also with facts. He backs up every claim of injustice with the historical background and the facts that affected Native Americans. There are numerous analysis in the book that Mr. Echo-Hawk presents in an interesting read that makes those who read this recognize his case, cheer for his passion, and hope for the future of Native-Americans and other Indigenous Peoples.My concern is that will the Native-American Youth of today be as passionate as Mr. Echo-Hawk and other elders in the Native-American Communities? Has the Native-American Youth and their generations become to assimilated in Western-Culture to understand they have a distinct voice? I truly believe that every Native-American today should be presented this book and talk about it in Native Councils, Communities, Pow-Wow's, Stomp Dances, and other social gatherings and discuss this book and make a case either supporting what Mr. Echo-Hawk stands for and researching further issues affecting Native-Rights.Let me also add that I am not Native-American, nor do I have any right except to say that I admire Mr. Echo-Hawk for his passion, his great background as a lawyer who presents his findings in a clear and consise way and I hope that he continues this journey of justice for past crimes against Native-Americans.

If you're looking to learn more about modern-day infrastructure, picking this book would not be a bad start. It's not going to go in-depth about every nook and cranny of the electrical grid but it gives a nice high level explanation of how everything fits together. I appreciated how the author started small (his front yard) in many instances and then worked his way up through the levels to explain the systems. Would have appreciated him stepping outside of Raleigh a little more to explain the infrastructure in other cities but regardless he seemed to do a lot of research and I enjoyed the book :)

Very interesting read. Had to read it for my MPA class, but probably one of the more interesting books I read for my program. Gives you a really good look at infrastructure. Quick read and full of interesting facts.

I got involved in Infrastructure as a volunteer and i had never studied it. This book was a really interesting read and gave a top to bottom view of Infrastructure. If you have a child that might enjoy engineering i definitely recommend this book as a way to get them interested.

I saw the author at a benefit for the local news organization and I bought this book to find out how the infrastructure works. I work for the city of Raleigh and to hear about this from a citizen's point of view, was very interesting and very understandable.

This book covers everything from power lines to waste water management. It's a must for understanding our infrastructure and very helpful for a deeper appreciation of the environment.

The bus was detained by Israeli soldiers at a checkpoint on the West Bank, and she was taken to a detention center before being released. The episode triggers sometimes heart-wrenching memories of herself as a young child, at the start of the 1967 Six Days' War, as Israeli soldiers conducted raids, their planes bombed her home, and she fled with her family across the border to Jordan. She also recalls living under occupation and the thrill of being able to attend the United Nations school for refugees. This book begins in 1981, when our author’s bus is stopped at Surda checkpoint between Birzeit and Ramallah. She’s detained for hours along with all the other bus riders. To calm herself, she goes into a reverie that takes her to her safe-haven, postbox 34. This box is her own little world of freedom where she receives letters from her pen pals, to whom she writes about anything and everything, except her traumatic childhood experiences!This account is a flashback told in the innocent voice of a three-and-a-half-year-old girl who is separated from her parents, for a whole day, during the six-day war in 1967. As the planes fly overhead, the family flees their home. Ibtisam who is still trying to lace up her left shoe suddenly realizes that there’s no one there. As fear strikes her little heart she leaves her right shoe and goes out into the dark. The courage and endurance of this little girl, in her quest to reunite with her parents is heart wrenching.Ibtisam Barakat draws you into her innocent, patient, persistent and very imaginative little life with magic strings that she weaves with her words and metaphors. She makes friends with a baby donkey in whom she confides. When she must leave him behind, she makes friends with the first letter of the alphabet and confides in the piece of chalk that drew him, until it finally crumbles into dust. This child’s life is full of fear, courage, agony, happiness, love, disappointment, and fulfillment as she endures the occupation along with her family.The book ends in 1971 when a broken hearted Ibtisam moves again from her childhood home, this time for good.In writing this book the author frees herself of the emotions that compelled her to shield her childhood. Her story is not done though. It continues in her next book Balcony on the Moon: Coming of age in Palestine… My next read.

What a charming and at the same time gut-wrenching account of a young girl growing up in occupied Palestine! I thoroughly enjoyed this honest and sweet autobiography.I met the author, Ibtisam Barakat, at my school last semester, and she's amazing as well. I hope everyone who is anti-Palestine reads her work or hears her speak and realizes that these are actual human beings with families and lives who are being torn apart and threatened by the occupation.

I just finished reading this exquisite book by a writer I met 10 years ago at a writing retreat for women. Ibtisam struck me then as an exceptionally vibrant and talented young writer who gave me her favorite book of poems by Hafiz. She had just begun writing her memoir, Tasting the Sky, at the time so it was with delight I read that it had been published. The stars must have been dancing around this young woman as she wrote because her words sing across the pages, even while narrating the traumatic experience of fleeing her home at the age of 3 1/2 during the Six Day 1967 Arab-Israeli War, when she was separated from her parents and walked for days in bleeding bare feet before finding them. This is a story of a closely knit family who manage to gather every joy to be found as they struggle to rebuild their lives and make a home. Two loving brothers, a doting and dedicated father, the lively young girl herself and her strict but caring mother share a generosity of spirit and hopefulness that lifts what could be a story of victimization into one of ongoing hopefulness, and yes, forgiveness.

You will love this book.Is so super good.There is a "historical note" at the end that does not match at all, as ifwritten by some editor not the author.The book itself though is perfect. Vivid kindnesses from a Palestinian Blackgirl's perspective. Beautifuland vegan too!

Bought this for my daughter for a school assignment but ended up reading it myself too. This is a classic childhood remembrance story combined with the horrors of war....definitely a deep book but worth the investment...the author, about whom the book is about, still manages to leave the reader with a feeling of hope for the future despite the situational pain she faces during her journey...suitable for older kids, my daughter is 11 (advanced reader) and was able to comprehend the material, but some of the background info kinda flew over her head because she is not old enough to have really been exposed to something like this yet...

I found this a moving, poignant, powerful story of a girl growing up in war and under occupation. There are grim details in here, but Ibtisam captures the joy and delight of childhood and growing up more than anything else. I have purchased many copies of this book to give out to friends and family because I love to support independent writers, women writing their memoirs and books that go beyond politics and rhetoric to show us the true heart of humanity. Without exception everyone I have given the book to has been deeply touched by the story and in turn passed their copy on to someone else. I do believe the world is made a better place by hearing well told stories of ALL people. This particular book fills a large void in world literature -- the voice of a Palestinian young woman!

My husband purchased this book as an addition to our Catholic School's library wanting to give the students a glimpse into an experience they might otherwise not understand. Having now read the book, I am looking forward to sharing it with schools young readers and also grateful to the author for sharing such a sweet and thoughtful story. I used this book as a read aloud in my 5th grade daughter's homeschooling segment on the middle east. We both really enjoyed how the story was told and the details. It gave us a lot to discuss as far as the history of the Middle East, Israel, and Palestine.While many parts of the story were sad there was also an excellent sense of humor through the story. The chapter on circumcision was especially funny (and terrifying) especially as this topic was new to my daughter.I know we can debate Israel/Palestine until the end of time but as a resource to show how these conflicts affect us as children this story was an invaluable resource.
