This is such a beautiful book. If you are into Fashion Books from outstanding photographers, this is a must have. Ellen von Unwerth has a very distinguishable style that I am sure you will enjoy the imagery from her immaculate storytelling.

The content of the book is 4 stars. It's light-hearted, sexy, beautiful. It's a very big book, probably 80% of the photos are just throwaways, but there are still quite a few striking gems to find.The problem is the print quality control. That's 0 stars. My copy was covered in streaks, tons of dust, smudges. It all occurred while the ink was still wet; it's like a dust storm blew through the printing facility and left grains all over the pages. Absolutely terrible.

I have had the great fortune of being able to attend some of Ben Decker's meditation classes here in Los Angeles. I have a very solid meditation practice and I learn something new every time I am in a room with him! I’m fairly new at meditation and I love this book! It takes you step by step through different ways to ease into the life altering progress of learning how to meditate.

I previously experienced meditations in which Ben was the practitioner. I always felt much better afterward - yet failed to replicate it on my own. Months later, Ben announced the publication of this book and I was ecstatic. It simplifies his expertise. My schedule is busy yet I still found it easy and a joy to go through each day with this book. Thank you for sharing your insight so we can become happier, calmer, and healthier - even amongst all the demanding external stimuli and to-do lists that try to capture our attention every day. Highly recommend!

I tried meditation apps before, and always found some benefit to them, but then quit using them shortly thereafter. This book was my first attempt at non-guided meditation (meaning no audio recording talking to me as I meditated). It was fantastic. The descriptions are simple and easy to follow. The writing is concise and gets you into meditating as quickly as possible. The 10 different approaches are also great as I found some that worked wonderfully, some that were okay, and some I didn't care for. I expect everyone is different, so getting a bit of diversity seems really valuable. It certainly was for me. Anyway, I have bought 2 additional copies to give to friends. Highly recommend this book as a jumping off point for meditation.

I was given this book as a gift and I am very impressed with how well-explained each concept and exercise is. This is the most useful book on meditation that I have ever come across. Each chapter is both simple and profound and potent. The meditation on Day 4 with Mindful Eating was life-altering for me.

Benjamin W. Decker's "Practical Meditation for Beginners" is a beautiful initiation into the practice of meditation for both beginners and adepts alike. With absolutely eloquent writing, tangible exercises, and ethereal artwork, this book is a must-have for anyone on the path to self realization, and/or looking for more calm and clarity in their life experience. I highly recommend this lovely book to anyone who is a seeker, and hoping to cultivate a deeper relationship with the life-enhancing practice of meditation.

Columbia's legend over the last two decades has as much to do with the work he's destroyed or never finished as with the few spectacular, horrifying pieces that actually have seen publication. This, his first book, makes a point of being unfinished and unfinishable. These aren't actually stories about Pim and Francie, a pair of little-kid characters (drawn in a vintage animation style) who are perpetually stumbling into ghastly, wrenchingly violent scenarios: they're mangled fragments of stories, closeups of incomplete comics pages and animation storyboards, stained and crumpled sketches and notes. The book's spine calls its contents artifacts and bone fragments, as if they're what's left for a forensic scientist to identify after a brutal murderer has had his way with them; Columbia obsessively returns to images of bloody bloody killers. (His cartoon shorthand for destruction is a human tornado with lots of bent arms holding knives at daffy angles.) Many of the pieces are just one or two drawings, as if they've been reduced to the moment when an idyllic piece of entertainment goes hideously awry. But they're also showcases for Columbia's self-frustrating mastery: his absolute command of the idiom of lush, old-fashioned cartooning, and the unshakable eeriness of his visions of horror. (Nov.) Pim and Francie are a boy and a girl right out of early animation: crisply drawn in a handful of stock positions, with big shoes and three-fingered gloves, and usually identically posed when shown together, except when one or the other is in a chopped-up state. Chopped-up? Well, their grandpa and grandma as well as the Bloody Bloody Killer often turn up flourishing big knives and straight razors. This is all done in black and white, of course, like the early, silent, deadly Felix the Cat cartoons, and also in various apparent states of wear, tear, and draftsmanship (penciled, inked, half-inked, overlaid, palimpsest). I've wanted this book for years, I was so excited when I saw it was only $30 and not the $180 it used to be. The quality is incredible and every ounce of this piece of work had me fascinated by every detail. A definite need for comic book collectors or anyone in love with having something creepy within arms reach.Thank you Al Columbia.One slight flaw: the book I received was slightly damaged on the bottom part of the binding. Nothing that would really take away from the book itself, but being picky about it's condition, I was slightly disappointed.

Al Columbia is one of the most enigmatic cartoonists alive and this collection will only add to his mystery. This book contains no story, only ideas and sketches pulled together and presented with some attempt to produce a very loose narrative. Collected here are the raw and disturbing images from the mind of an artist with seemingly no boundaries. If you've ever read anything by Columbia you'll know that he really doesn't do any self censorship and if anything this book is tamer than much of what he has produced. Columbia is generally characterized as such a perfectionist that his productivity is almost non-existent. This book would definitely back up that theory since many of these drawings are absolutely stunning and would only need some slight cleanup to be presented to the public in an actual story. As someone with a small bit of background in graphic design it saddens me to see pictures that clearly took many hours to create torn and taped back together.If the book did have a theme you might say it's the loss of innocence. It isn't the innocence of Pim and Francie since they are clearly corrupted from the get go. Early in the book Francie is shown attached to a laughing monstrosity by an umbilical cord while Pim, cigar in hand and face obscured by shadows, shouts, `whore, he looks nothing like me'. No, the innocence that Columbia tries to take is that of the reader. The book is littered with images of beloved Disney characters including one haunting drawing featuring badly damaged statues of Mickey, Pluto and Donald Duck's nephews. Mickey's mouth is a gaping smashed hole; an image that's hard to shake made all the more sickening by the skill and precision of Al Columbia. Columbia's `Bloody Bloody Killer' bears a slight resemblance to Goofy if Goofy had leering bulging eyes, a mirthless smile and a butcher's knife in each hand. There is an insane looking picture of what appears to be Pluto with his face carved up and a look of masochistic delight while in another image Pim has Bambi on a leash having hacked off two of the young doe's legs and his tail. I would suggest visiting Fantagraphics website which offers 24 pages from the book as a preview.Al Columbia reuses a lot of ideas but again this is a sketch book of experimentation and not a finished product. There are a lot of images of multi-limbed creatures with arms at unnatural angles and a butcher's knife in each hand. Sometimes the creature seems to literally have multiple arms while in others it appears that the knives may be getting juggled and the extra arms are meant to show movement. Besides being inspired by Disney and Fleischer I see similarities to a lot of comics from the 1920's, 30's and 40's. Some of the characters resemble political cartoons from the 40's that featured disgusting distorted images of opposing world leaders. They were typically drawn grotesquely fat with demonic claws and greedy tongues licking thick slobbering lips. In one picture two of these beasts are selling kittens to what appears to be the `Bloody Bloody Killer' for God knows what purpose. If you look back at a lot of comics like `The Yellow Kid', from the turn of the last century, many of the drawings look very disturbing today and I sense that this was one of the sources of inspiration. Not everything in the book will repulse. A lot of pictures are quite lovely and could easily be featured in a children's book without complaint but you always get the feeling of dread that one turn of the page will be a return to hell.One thing about Fantagraphics is they clearly care about what they put out. The cover is fantastic giving the appearance that the book is taped up. The paper stock is very nice and the binding is perfect. No worries at all in the presentation. I just can't help but feel that this whole endeavor is a desperate attempt to get anything out from Al Columbia. What I would have preferred was a compilation of his works from various comics many of which are extremely hard to get but the ultimate would be an all new book. I just cannot in good conscience give this book the full five stars because in the end it's an incomplete project. It's more of a tease or perhaps a sad reminder of lost potential. Al Columbia has some amazing stories rattling around in his head and hopefully someday they will get polished up and presented in a finished format.

I'm really unsure how to review this book because it is simply unlike anything I have ever experienced before. I found this as it was recommended on a message board I frequent as one of the most horrifying graphic novels of all time.Reading this book feels like being punched in the brain. There isn't much of a plot, although with a little creativity one can imagine how all the panels are linked. It can be described as sequential art, although probably more accurately just a book of unrelated art.This stuff is truly horrifying and will probably give me nightmares. I am a consumer of horror entertainment in all mediums and couldn't imagine there was much left to scare me. This stuff was really, truly horrifying though. Some of it is sick, some of it is scary, but it leaves an impression.If you are the type of person who can laugh at a cartoon image of Bambi being tortured and dismembered by a child with a razor blade, this is for you. The only way I can describe it is an "experience."

This book is easily one of the most unsettling creations to surface in comics history. If one chooses to stay at surface-level, the artwork by itself is worthy of repeated gazes. Disney characters, deconstructed and busted, and Fleischer Bros. dream ghouls abound. To the passers-by, it may appear to be just a nice and ugly collection of distorted funnies. However, the thin thread of narrative has to be found by delving beneath that exterior. It can and has been said that this is not a conventionally plotted story, but that actually makes the jumps all the more jarring. By leaving out exposition and conventional dialogue, the remains tend to create an even more disturbing mood. Who knows if this was an intentional structure by Mr. Columbia or a result of editing? Either way, it almost seems like a new way of telling a horro-comic story. The Sketches and enlarged fragments, tape boogers and smudges all make it seem as if you've happened on some derelict from cartoon hell. Oily Recommitted!

Haunting,disturbing,grim,beautiful,discomforting, and absolutely brilliant. I am a huge fan of Mr.Al Columbia & I am so happy he decided to release all of this beautiful unused artwork he had hiding in his private works. I HIGHLY recommend you check this book out. It is by far one of my favorites in my very large collected library. GO PICK IT UP TODAY

I was disappointed with this book. First of all, it is 95% focused on coffee rather than caffeine in general, only lightly touches on tea or other sources of caffeine. It was a difficult read, the context and organization has room for much improvement. Returned immediately

Dangerous of CaffeineThis book is straight to the point. I have never been a fan of caffeine, this book helped reaffirm that dislike. I won’t sway anyone in this review, no need. This book will show you the true depths of the hole caffeine creates in you as a person. Get facts, correct knowledge, and a history that most don’t even know about this drug, and yes I mean drug. This book won’t convince you to get off the caffeine train; it simply gives you the information to convince yourself.

This book is medium (ha coffee humor), there is nothing funny about the problems caffeine can cause so this book is a must for those who recognize their problem, curious or just in denial. One would be surprised what other products have caffeine or just too much caffeine.

Great information about coffee. I had no idea that it caused all the problems that it causes. The vitamins and minerals that it pulls from your body. Wow! very good knowledge and very well written. I find the melatonin right on. My husband has issues with sleeping and he drinks a lot of coffee. I am going to ask him to read this book. And nobody wants to age quicker. Very good read.

The author painted a great picture about the effects caffeine has on the body. I didn't realize how many foods and drinks out there use caffeine. Although I'm a huge coffee drinker, I think I might cut back some. Maybe use some decaf coffee.

Fascinating read on the dangers and risks of the overuse of caffeine. I personally developed a "panic attack" after drinking too much coffee way back in the mid 1980's and as a result chose to had stop drinking coffee and any beverage with caffeine in it. I am not sure whether or not caffeine was being added to foods where you least expected it back in the day. For a period of 18 months thereafter I totally abstained. When I started law school at night while I was working full time and drive 120 miles a day, I had to go back to drinking caffeine as I could not maintain sufficient focus in the night classes without it. Now I drink maybe two cups a day and then some iced tea. I think that's where the difficult thing comes in when living in the modern world, yes too much caffeine can be harmful to one's health, but with all the demands on our time it's hard to stay focused for the time needed to do what we need to do with all the demands on our time. The good thing about the book is that it makes one think of the risks one may be taking with one's health, explains how much is too much at least at the high ends of usage patterns the book even has some suggestions about how to stop using caffeine all together. Whether or not you chose to give up caffeine is up to you, but I beleive we should have knowledge of what the risks are and suggestions on how to get off caffeine if one so chooses.

I'd like to keep clear on the difference between the value of the author's message and on whether this is a good book. Yes, I appreciate what the author has to say. As a recovering caffein addict (only a few cups a day, but it was ruining my life), I was thankful for the affinity she provided and confirmation that caffeine can affect some people severely, even if less so for others.But as a book it was a challenging read to stick with and after finishing it I was disatisfied. It's scope is laudable, trying to catalag a variety of negative effects and reference related studies. As a result its main utility may be for people to draw a connection they had not realized before between their personal maladies and their caffeine consumption. And this would especially be the case for doctors, who may be entirely ignoring caffeine as the source of serious health issues such as nerve or heart problems. The author relates a number of misdiagnosises in this area.The biggest problem is that the book suffers from weak logic in many arguments it is making. Unfortunately, at this time most studies cannot yet link caffeine as a direct CAUSE of problems, only a correlation. That's a real challenge for any author who is trying to sound an alarm about that, because it is not possible to be definitive in your arguments. Rather than outright acknowledge that, the author sometimes reverts to cheap statements like this snippet from page 58 ("What is caffeine?"), "As with cocaine, heroin, and morphine, caffeine is white."I did appreciate the call out about how caffeine is in so many products. There are striking similarities between its use and how cigarette makers spike tabacco with audictive enhancers, but it was surprising this book did not pursue that much. The fact that we and our youth are being fed a constant stream of this subversive drug is perhaps where the real call to arms should come from. I hope one day someone can pick up on that and make some change. This book might inspire that.

I found this useful and enjoyed it. Lots of references. The knowledge gained has helped me with my coffee addiction.

Since the transgender issue entered politics via NC's HB2 "bathroom bill", I chose this book as an attempt to get some understanding of the issue. I think the book serves that purpose well, offering a frank, presumably realistic, and relatively a-political insight into the struggles of a transgender person. I found it neither preachy nor defensive, it just "tells it like it is." It may be the closest a "straight" person can come to "walking a mile in the other person's shoes."I would wish all our politicians would read a book such as this, or even better, talk to some actual persons with non-typical gender idenitty, before passing legislation in areas in which they have no actual experience.

I've thought about suicide for many years, and I just have to say, after reading this book, and joining her lives on Facebook, and just reading about Jazz Jennings in general keeps me from suicide. There's more to life than what you think!!!

Jazz's honesty and her willingness to share her experiences along this journey is commendable! Contrary to what haters believe, this is not a "chosen" path, and she is dealing with her life as she sees fit. She is a spokesperson for every transgender person out there- she is blessed to have a supportive family which she realizes is not always the case. At times she is wise beyond her years, and other times she is just a teenage girl trying to navigate life. I enjoyed reading about her journey and I hope, as a school nurse, I can support other children along the way who are just trying to be their "authentic selves!" (as Jazz says!)

I am 12 years old and I just finished this book! Honestly pure amazing! It is very entertaining and funny and informative! I LOVE Jazz, she is so inspiring and such a powerful girl! I am pretty in to her show so I was super excited when I found out she had a book! And I was not let down, finished it in 2 days because I couldn't stop reading it! Totally 100% recommend for kids 11+... LOVE! Thank you jazz for inspiring me to be a stronger person!

One suspects this was dictated or ghost written to some degree. It has a meandering style and the celebrity stories are pretty dull to kids who don't care about Barbara Walters ("Who is that?" asked my kid) But the narrative is cogent and timely and my ten year old learned a lot from our discussion after we both read it. The genuine personality of a resiliant and brave young lady emerges from the text and she has much to share with the world, for sure.

I watch every TLC episode of Jazz. She was chosen two years in a row as one of the 25 most influential teens of the world. She is a trailblazer with the loving support of her family. Her story has been an indispensable resource for me to share, as a clinical social worker, with teens who are exploring gender identity.

Great book I don't understand trans very well but this opened my eyes a lot more thought she did a great job

For anyone who thinks this is a phase. It's not. I'm living it with my new daughter!
